Fox & Friends co-host Lawrence Jones had a clear takeaway for the Republican party following President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech: “Get it together.”
The right-of-center and top-rated morning show was largely, and predictably, critical of Biden’s speech but struggled to focus on a single narrative to dismiss it.
Criticism that the president presented as angry and delivered a partisan and divisive speech is undermined by the overwhelmingly angry, partisan, and divisive presumptive GOP nominee, former President Donald Trump. The “jacked up Joe” ridicule that Biden was overly energetic seems ridiculous from a network that constantly derides the commander-in-chief as “Sleepy Joe” or “Sippy Cup.”
It wasn’t until the start of the 8 AM hour that Jones finally came around to effectively conceding that Biden’s speech was a political victory — at least for the Democrats, who he believes are now unified around their nominee.
“It’s clear that Biden did what he needed to do last night to unify his party,” Jones said. “They were all singing his praises last night. You got the pundits on television that are now rallying behind Biden.”
“The Republicans better get it together, better figure out what they believe,” Jones continued. “They got a nominee, now. They need to be in lockstep because the Democrats are going to be in lockstep.”
Jones then mentioned Senator James Lankford, the co-author of a border bill whom a camera caught agreeing with Biden’s comments on the legislation, saying, “It’s true.”
“I saw James Lankford, who is still pushing this bill ahead. Your party has rejected it, a lot of the American people have rejected it,” Jones said. “Marco Rubio tried to do this years ago with amnesty and bring people together, but he realized that the people within his party, his base, did not like it.”
Jones is wrong here, at least according to a recent Wall Street Journal poll that shows a majority of Americans want to pass the immigration bill, but who are we to expect an honest report on an opinion-based show?
“So you got to let it go and figure out what you’re going to do to move the country and your party forward,” he concluded. “It can’t be siding with Democrats and nodding as the president is giving this speech, bashing Republicans. ”
Joey Jones and Brian Kilmeade countered that the GOP is unified, the latter saying “that speech unified Republicans. Yeah. I mean, I hope so many more are going to endorse Trump by the end of the day.”
“Well, Nikki Haley, what are you going to do now?” Jones said to camera. “Because Joe Biden put a red line. What is your
