President Donald Trump pondered aloud whether a new Abu Dhabi-funded stadium being built in Queens, New York, would be used for the 2028 Olympics – currently set to be hosted over 2,700 miles away in Los Angeles.

New York City FC’s long-awaited stadium in Willets Point, to be named Etihad Park as part of the finance partnership with the Abu Dhabi-based airline, will be the city’s first purpose-built soccer stadium. The 25,000-seat venue was greenlit earlier this year by the New York City Council as part of the next phase of the Willets Point Redevelopment project.

During his visit to Abu Dhabi on Friday, Trump praised the investment in a presentation by Etihad representatives.

“I grew up in Queens,” the president said. “I know the area very well. Oh that’s great. Wow. That’s where they used to fix the cars. A lot of other things got fixed there. A lot of things. That’s a great site.”

“Will they be using that in the Olympics?” Trump asked.

“It will be available to be used,” the Etihad rep replied.

“Because it’s prime you know for some of the games,” Trump replied. “We have the World Cup coming, and we have the Olympics coming over the next couple of years. That’s great.”

The stadium is slated to open in time for the

2027 MLS season and will not be ready for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, for which it could have been used as the competition is hosted across the nation.

With Los Angeles set to host the 2028 Olympics, don’t be surprised if Trump tries to redirect some of that global spotlight back to Queens — his old stomping grounds.
