Pro-Trump commentator Ben Shapiro was panned by those on the political left and right for demanding that Americans nominate “normies” for public office in response to a bombshell CNN report surfaced bizarre comments reportedly written by North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson on a porn website.

Thursday’s CNN KFile exposé found Robinson making wild claims like “I’m a Black Nazi” as well as a remark about spying on a women’s locker room. Robinson has denied the claims, suggesting that they could have been fabricated using artificial intelligence.

Shapiro weighed in on Friday to suggest that voters should choose “people who lead normal lives” and “who don’t go to sex parties while locking you down in NY or spend their days trolling porn sites leaving strange comments.”

Backlash to his commentary, however, came from both sides of the aisle.

Liberals accused Shapiro, who often rails against progressives on social issues, of being part of the reason why politics is filled with the “lunatics” he was rejecting.

Others mocked Shapiro for his previous backing of Robinson in the face of criticism:

Meanwhile Trump supporters dismissed the idea of returning to pre-MAGA Republican politicians, like President George W. Bush and late Senator John McCain (R-AZ).
