What is Sean Penn’s One ‘Terrible Regret’ Over Interviewing El Chapo?

Ever since it came to light that Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was captured because he was traced after an interview he gave to Sean Penn for Rolling Stone, the actor has come under question for whether what he did met professional and legal standards.

Today, CBS released a preview of an interview Penn gave to Charlie Rose for 60 Minutes, and while Penn previously said he had “nothin to hide,” he said that he wishes his article had a different sort of impact on the public.

Penn began by stating he thought his interview had “nothing to do” with how the authorities tracked the kingpin’s movements, and that his hideout that was raided by the Mexican Navy was far away from where the two met. Penn also said that the Mexican government was humiliated that the fact that he was able to use a contact (presumably Kate del Castillo) to find him, and that Penn is now concerned that El Chapo’s cartel might come after him for revenge.

Penn also went

on to say that his motivation for writing the article was to spark a new conversation on America’s drug policy, and that the scrutiny has been a result of journalists who were jealous of his story. When asked if he had any second thoughts, Penn admitted that he had one “terrible regret” over the whole thing.

“The entire discussion about this article ignores its purpose, which was to try to contribute to this discussion about the policy in the War on Drugs,” Penn said. “My article has failed.”
