“The plight of refugees from around the globe is garnering significant media attention with stories and poignant images of dangerous journeys, tragic deaths, unwelcoming refugee policies, and the particular challenges faced by women and children fleeing violence,” 73 House Democrats wrote in the letter spearheaded by Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.).
The members of Congress expressed their appreciation for Obama’s plan, announced on Thursday, to accept 10,000 refugees — a substantial increase from the “insufficient” 1,500 Syrians who have come to the U.S. since that country’s civil war began — but said “such an increase must be bold, and take into account the enormity of the current crisis.” Citing other nations’ intake of refugees, they called on the president to allow for the resettlement of 200,000 total
The refugees, escaping poverty, war, and religious persecution, have fled in droves to nations such as Lebanon, Turkey, and Jordan, the representatives wrote, adding that the U.S. has a “moral duty” to help those in need. They also dismissed concerns over national security and the economy.
“As Americans and members of Congress, we believe it is our duty to do the right thing and offer protection to those fleeing violence and turmoil in the Middle East,” the Democrats concluded.
