Sen. Katie Britt’s (R-AL) response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address was brutally mocked on social media Thursday night, and a clip she posted before the speech is now going viral with many people wondering why she wasn’t able to speak more normally during her response.

Delivering the opposition party’s response to a president’s State of the Union address is widely viewed as a thankless task, but Britt’s commentary had viewers all across the political aisle eviscerating her performance and making jokes about how Saturday Night Live would portray her. Multiple media outlets reported especially scathing reactions from Republican members of Congress and strategists (mostly anonymously, of course).

As the Daily Wire’s Gregg Re pointed out, even the official Senate Republicans account basically admitted the video of Britt’s response was a dud — they posted a thread of photos of Britt with text quoting her remarks, but not the actual video.

Amid the ridicule, numerous people on The Platform Formerly Known as Twitter pointed out

the video Britt posted shortly before the State of the Union. In the clip, various light and sound equipment can be seen, there are plants in the background, and Britt herself has a far more relaxed, friendly, and natural tone than she would adopt during her SOTU response, which drew mockery for both the overly beige kitchen (and sexist undertones of the location) and Britt’s emotional and dramatic speaking style.
