Christiane Amanpour was shocked when the head of a controversial branch of the United Nations claimed that starving Gazans have resorted to eating animal feed.
The CNN host interviewed Philippe Lazzarini, head of UNRWA, The U.N. Agency For Palestinian Refugees. UNRWA has come under fire after allegations that 12 staff members participated in Hamas’ October 7 attacks on Israel. Those claims are currently being investigated.
Amanpour introduced the clip of her interview by saying, “In an astonishing conversation this week, UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini told me the looming famine in Gaza is now so bad that some people have been eating animal feed to survive. And even that now is running out.”
On tape, Lazzarini said, “We hear more and more situation where there is not even enough animal food for human consumption for the people there.”
Amanpour interrupted, “Wait, wait, wait, let me just stop you. What do you say? Animal food for human consumption? That’s what they’re relying on? There’s not even enough of that?”
“There is not even enough of animal food, of animal fodder, for people to eat or to do bread with animal fodder,” Lazzarini said.
On Friday, President Biden announced that the U.S. would airdrop food and other supplies into Gaza. The announcement came after shocking video showed Palestinians being trampled and shot by IDF troops while trying to gather food from aid trucks in Gaza City. More
In an interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins Friday, an Israeli Government spokesperson blamed Hamas for stealing food and disrupting aid from getting to starving Gazans.
Eylon Levy claimed, “It’s a unique challenge to work out how you distribute aid in an active war zone, where we know that the terrorist organization Hamas is hijacking aid, that the U.N. agencies that are supposed to distribute aid has been covering up for Hamas. And worse than that, have been relying on Hamas protection for the ships, for the cargo.”
