Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) vented on Wednesday that the House had “turned into an unmitigated disaster” since the ousting of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) last year.
After House Republicans were defeated in their attempt to impeach Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas this week, Massie tweeted:
Getting rid of Speaker McCarthy has officially turned into an unmitigated disaster. All work on separate spending bills has ceased.Spending reductions have been traded for spending increases.Warrantless spying has been temporarily extended. Our majority has shrunk.
After one social media user commented, “Getting rid of [George] Santos was the mistake. Getting rid of McCarthy wasn’t,” Massie replied, “Name one thing that’s improved under the new Speaker.”
While Massie’s post received more than 11,000 likes, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) – the ringleader of McCarthy’s ousting – shot back, “McCarthy lied to us, made secret side deals, increased spending, got rolled by Biden and shrunk our majority by quitting when he couldn’t run
McCarthy was voted out as speaker of the House in October 2023 after House Republicans accused him of failing to adhere to his promises. McCarthy resigned from Congress entirely at the end of that year.
Eight Republicans voted with 208 Democrats to successfully remove McCarthy from his position versus 210 Republicans who voted against. Massie voted against McCarthy’s removal.
