Former President Donald Trump held a campaign rally on Wednesday in New York, which is not in play in November’s general election. Nevertheless, he told attendees he will win the state and its 28 electoral votes.

The state has not gone for a Republican presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan in 1984. Trump lost New York by 23 points in 2016 and in 2020. Speaking at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, the former president said he will save the Empire State.

“We are going to start by saving the great state of New York,” he said to thunderous applause and chants of “U.S.A.!” “Is that good? When I told some people in Washington I’m going up to New York, we’re doing a campaign speech, they said, ‘What do you mean New York? You can’t ever. Nobody can win. Republicans can’t win.’ I said, ‘I can win New York and we can win New York. We’re going to win New York!'”

The former president then pledged to solve rally-goers’ ills.

“And if you vote for me, I’m going to reduce your taxes, reduce your crime, and reduce your levels of stress,” he continued. “You got a lot of stress. The only thing that I will increase are your incomes and love for your state. We’ll come roaring back again.”

Polling

in New York isn’t nearly as plentiful as surveys of swing states for obvious reasons. However, one poll conducted in August shows Vice President Kamala Harris leading Trump by 16 points.

It was the second rally in New York in recent months for the former president, who held a rally in the Bronx in May.
