CNN anchor Kasie Hunt laughed when GOP strategist Mark McKinnon joked there was “good news” about the racist jokes that were told at former President Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally.
Trump is getting a lot of attention for the antics at his Madison Square Garden rally, which his critics compared to an infamous 1939 American Nazi rally even before it began.
In particular, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s joke about Puerto Rico being a “floating island of garbage” has been played essentially on a loop by cable news following the rally — so much so that the Trump campaign tried to distance itself from the comment.
On Monday’s edition of CNN This Morning, Hunt asked McKinnon about the rally, and McKinnon replied with a joke:
KASIE HUNT: Is all — this what you think we saw on stage at the Garden last night?MARK MCKINNON: Yeah, well, you know, I mean, the thing that happened at the Garden — and first of all, you show Donald Trump’s clip, that’s not worth getting a lot of the news. He’s finally getting the right message and he’s on message, even if his surrogates aren’t.And the key question is, you know, how much what showed up in, you know, actual daily newspapers in swing states. And I’m told that those Puerto Rican comments didn’t really show up. If Trump’s message is
breaking through, that’s obviously the right message. The good news is Puerto Rico doesn’t have any electoral votes.KASIE HUNT: (LAUGHS) Puerto Rico does not. But there are a lot of Puerto Ricans in Pennsylvania in particular. And I will say, I think that the community takes quite a bit of pride in their heritage. If you I’m sure you know, when you when you talk to Puerto Ricans, it comes through real fast. So I’m interested to see if it if it starts to kind of ripple through social media.
