Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) expressed his frustration with former President Donald Trump over his efforts to stop a bipartisan bill to address the ongoing crisis at the southern border on Thursday, telling CNN’s Manu Raju that it is “appalling.”
On Wednesday night, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told his colleagues that “the politics” of the border bill — which would also provide more aid to Ukraine — “have changed,” reading aloud a quote from Trump explaining his opposition to the bill.
“We don’t want to do anything to undermine him [Trump],” said McConnell according to Punchbowl News.
In a hallway interview with Raju, Romney described and evaluated the situation:

And the fact that he would communicate to Republican senators and congresspeople that he doesn’t want us to solve the border problem because he wants to blame Biden for it is really appalling. And someone running for president ought to try and get the, you know, the problem solved, as opposed to saying, “Hey, save that problem. Don’t solve it. Let me take credit for solving it later.”
Romney is a longtime critic of Trump and the last person to
The party elder announced last fall that he would not seek another term in the Senate, and Trump celebrated the news on Truth Social, calling it “FANTASTIC NEWS FOR AMERICA,THE GREAT STATE OF UTAH, & FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.”
“A BIG PRIMARY FIGHT AGAINST HIM WAS IN THE OFFING, BUT NOW THAT WILL NOT BE NECESSARY. CONGRATS TO ALL. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” declared Trump.
