Fox News host Jesse Watters argued that “everyone knows” in El Salvador knows that Chicago Bulls merchandise is an MS-13 gang signifier as he mocked the idea that deported Maryland man Kilmar Abrego Garcia was really a fan of the team.

Garcia, born in El Salvador, fled to the U.S. after his family became a target of gang extortion. According to his legal filings, a local gang had begun threatening his grandmother’s small tortilla shop, demanding money and issuing death threats. Fearing for his life, Garcia crossed the border as a teen and eventually settled in Maryland, with a wife and children, where he has lived for years while seeking asylum.

The man’s Chicago Bulls cap became a flashpoint in his legal saga after it was cited in 2019 law enforcement filings as possible evidence of gang affiliation.

Officers claimed the Bulls merchandise could be a signifier for MS-13, the notorious street gang, based on patterns observed among some members and highlighted in Homeland Security guidance memos that were mentioned in court documents, released March. Authorities also said they acted on a tip from a confidential informant linking him to MS-13. Police had documented the claim on an internal form later shared with federal immigration authorities.

Garcia and his attorneys have pushed back strongly on that assertion, calling it a misinterpretation of cultural fashion rather than a credible gang marker, and the Supreme Court has demanded the Trump administration “facilitate” his return,

but according to Watters, the man’s backstory was little more than an eye-roll-worthy.

During a segment on Jesse Watters Primetime on Tuesday, the host mocked the idea that Garcia was a fan — considering that the team lost 60 games in 2019 — and questioned whether the migrant could name anyone on the team.

Garcia is a Bulls fan, but he’s from El Salvador and he lives in Maryland, not Chicago. The Bulls lost 60 games in 2019, so why the hat? Can Garcia name anyone on the team? Anyone on any Bulls team besides Jordan?Everyone from El Salvador knows what it means. When you wear a Bulls hat, it means you’re MS-13. When you’re in Compton, you don’t accidentally wear red and say: ‘Oh, I didn’t know red was Bloods.’ If you’re a Latin American illegal alien in Maryland, you don’t accidentally wear Chicago Bulls gear and hang around with high ranking gangsters from MS-13.

Watters went on to mock Garcia’s entire story:

This is the reason he had to break into the country. Are you ready? A local gang in El Salvador was shaking down his grandma’s tortilla shop, and his lawyers say if he gets sent back to El Salvador, he’s a dead man. It’s a tortilla blood vendetta. Seriously? So who are Garcia’s attorneys who managed to get their

client a hearing in the Supreme Court?
