The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg suggested on Tuesday that former President Donald Trump would “disappear” gay people and journalists if reelected president this year.
“I’m here to say it’s ours to lose. It is this country, this is what it’s all about,” said Goldberg on The View. “Either you want it to work forward thinking, you want everybody to have the ability to say how they feel, what they want, to move forward, or you don’t.”
She continued:
Or you want somebody who says, “I’m gonna be, on day one, I’m gonna be a dictator.” Who says it to you, tells you, “I’m going to put you people away. I’m gonna take all the journalists, I’m gonna take all the gay folks, I’m gonna move you all around and disappear you.” If that’s the country you want, you know who to vote for. If that’s not the country you want, you have to make a decision.
Goldberg concluded, “I believe the people of the United States will make themselves very clear because people keep telling them what they’re doing. Media keeps saying, this is what you’re doing.”
While the former president has never vowed to disappear gay people if reelected, Goldberg appeared to be referencing Trump’s remarks
After Fox News host Sean Hannity asked Trump to promise that he would “never abuse power as retribution against anybody,” Trump replied, “Except for day one.”
He continued, “We love this guy. He says, ‘You’re not gonna be a dictator, are you?’ I said, ‘No, no, no, other than day one.’ We’re closing the border and we’re drilling, drilling, drilling. After that, I’m not a dictator, ok?”
Trump later insisted that the comment was a joke.
