Politico obtained audio from a Manhattan fundraiser the Texas senator attended this month. Someone came up to Cruz, identified himself as a supporter, but told Cruz they disagree on gay marriage. He asked if, given how many big problems the U.S. is currently facing, how big a priority fighting gay marriage will be.
Cruz stuck to his states’ rights position on gay marriage and said he believes in the Constitution. When asked if gay marriage is a top 3 priority for him, Cruz said no, adding, “defending the Constitution is a top 3 priority, that cuts across the whole system.”
Cruz, of course, was pretty up in arms about the Supreme Court’s “radical” decision on gay marriage this June. A former Cruz communications director tweeted today the audio is pretty consistent with what he says publicly:
