After much grousing from the White House press corps and others, President Joe Biden is holding his first formal news conference next Thursday. Nonetheless, a top anchor is calling out the administration’s “highly sheltered” press strategy.

Appearing on the Fox News Rundown podcast Friday, Fox News Sunday anchor Chris Wallace swiped at the White House for limiting Biden’s media appearances. Noting that access to Biden during the campaign, Wallace argued that the administration’s press tactics show that there are concerns about “exposing” the president too much.

“This is not a surprise if you look at what happened in the campaign,” Wallace said. “This president, and clearly his staff, are not comfortable putting him out there too often.”

When Biden takes the podium next Thursday to face down the press corps, it will be his first such session in his two month old presidency — although he has done several one-on-one interviews, and fielded a few questions during pool sprays. For his part, Wallace believes the White House staff will spend a great deal of time with the president getting him ready.

“You can be sure, given what appears to be their concerns, and their discomfort in putting this president out in a public setting — especially a news conference, as opposed to a one-on-one interview — there’s gonna be a lot of prepping before.”
