Bill Maher Presents Obama Super PAC With $1 Million Check

While performing his “StupidCrazyPolitics” show at the San Jose Center For The Performing Arts in San Jose, CA Thursday night, comedian and HBO host Bill Maher announced he would be donating $1 million to Priorities USA Action, a pro-Barack Obama Super PAC.

The moment was broadcast by the Yahoo! Screen Comedy Channel as part of its inaugural Screen Live Standup Series.

Before, Maher Tweeted to his fans teasing a surprise announcement:

…And teaching them about the importance of always bringing your (comically humongous) wallet onstage:

That “surprise announcement” tweet was before the performance, not after, hence why it asks what we thought the surprise WAS, not what we thought ABOUT it. (The second tweet was also sent before the show.)

I’m sending some of my unemployment money to the Obama campaign.

At least he’s upfront about it, unlike Oreilly, Drugbaugh, and seanhannity.com

It takes money to fight the truly insane evil of today’s extremist right-wing Republican Party. I admire Mr. Maher for his generosity. Moreover, I feel certain that Mr. Maher’s donation will inspire thousands of middle-class Americans to contribute small sums to President Obama’s Super Pac. If for no other reason than that they can say that they did their part to stop the genuinely evil insanity of today’s demented Republican Party candidates.

Nothing more edgy than a comedian that openly supports authority and people in power.

  • Ben

I don’t think Bill was trying to be “edgy” there.

  • Keane

Wow. That’s incredible. Maher has been rather open about his unhappiness with Obama. This says much more about the state of the Republican party than it does Barack Obama. If there were a viable alternative, Maher wouldn’t be playing this game with so much of his own money.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jonathan-Carpenter/1000240898 Jonathan Carpenter

He made his career as a Libertarian Comedian who bashed Democrats and Republicans. This was to set himself apart from the other Comedians. Now that he is sucessfull he abandons all prentense. I do not care about what there beliefs are; but at least be consistent. Not like the Posuer Maher.

  • Anonymous

    Comedians are people.

  • beanyn

You should.  Because if it were up to the Republicans there would be no extension of unemployment benefits and the GOP are also responsible for crashing the economy.  So a big thank you to President Obama is very appropriate.

Bill is so stoned all the time and he gets his facts confused so much and he thinks what is funny is not and what he thinks is not funny IS !

Nothing worse than a  SEVERE snarky ELITE “comedian” (little c).

He is the little Napolean of HBO, and acts like his $hit don’t stink. UH, he stinks real massively.

I used too like his show a few years back but he has gotten so demonic it has almost lost all entertainment value.

Watching Real Time is a lot like watching MSLSD and the punks on there like Mad COW and SGT Shultz, and not so SHARPton.

I just try to learn what nutty people on the FAR OUT THERE (commie) left like him are thinking, which is impossible because he is too nutty and goes off the scale for decency.

Nothing like giving ONE MILLION dollars to our next DICKtator. THANKs BILLY the $hit.

We lost that right under the Patriot Act, October 26, 2001.

“This is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly. Nor need we shrink from honestly facing conditions in our country today. This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory.” FDR

1  there are NO mainstream republicans anymore.  they all became independent voters.
2 obama took 3 yrs but he ended the Iraq war. He had a skirmish with Libya getting rid of an evil dictator in a few months and our part in Libya was minor with no casualties.   (compare with Bush II’s 10 yr war with Iraq).
So there is less war, not more.  Bush II started 2 wars.  Most of the GOP candidates want to go to war with Iran and Syria, so be careful who you vote for.

3 There was less torture if any, and more trials for terrorists after obama took office.  Republicans didn’t want trials, remember?

4  Bush came in with 4 trillion national debt and left with about 11 trillion debt
Obama started with 11 and is at 15 trillion, so he still has 3 trillion to go just to spend as much as Bush and the GOP did. Note that Bush came in with a surplus of money and a barely there recession that started after he took office and lasted a few months while Obama came in with the worst recession/depression since the 1930′s with banks collapsing and businesses going under, PLUS massive job losses that Bush II left him. (Reagan put in about 3 trillion dollars national debt, by the way.)

5 Constitutional problems are no greater under Obama unless you count the Bush supreme court appointments allowing super pacs to collect unlimited anonymous money as “free speech”.  Obama was firmly against that, but he has no say over the supreme court.

Here’s recap since President Obama took office in Jan 2009. Comparing economic indicators starting in Jan 2009 to present day:
    1. Federal debt has increased by 43% from $10.6 trillion to $16 trillion.
    2. Americans living in poverty have increased by 16% from 39.8 million to 46.2 million.

    4. Price of gasoline has increased by 85% from $1.86/gal to $3.55/gal.
    5. Americans on food stamps have increased 42% from 31.8 million to 45.2 million.
    6. Home foreclosures per year have increased by 34% from 850,000 to 1,140,000.

    11. US dollar compared to gold has declined 105%. [ $855/ounce to $1780/ounce

Now you need to ask yourself this. The Democrats took over the House and Senate in 2007. The debt was 8.7 trillion. They are going to raise the debt ceiling to over 16 TRILLION. Thats 8 trillion more debt in a little over 5 years under the leadership of Democrats. Are you 8 trillion dollars better off now?

These Super PACs have two functions1) Do their best to advance their own agendas in the public sphere2) Put pressure on Obama to honour the values of people who support him.In fact, they may well be doing the exact opposite thing you imply they might be doing.

Really you people are just being aggressively ignorant. Yes, I am aware that a good deal of the verbiage of the Constitution, particularly the bill of rights, sets limits to the powers of the federal government. This has nothing whatsoever to do with the definition of “statist”. FYI, the opposite of statist is not, as a Paultard under the influence of Orwellian newspeak might have you believe, “small government libertarian”. It’s anarchist. • Anonymous

Just go to opensecrets.org and you can find where all the money is coming from – from all the PACS, and all campaign contributions. If you bother to look, Obama & Romney’s donors are very very similar. Obama is straight up a Wall Street guy. Have you seen his financial services committee? Every one of those guys is from a big wall street bank. Romney is very similar to Obama in that regard.

He’s bought dude – sorry. I know people want to believe that Obama is looking out for the interest of the People but it’s just the opposite. He’s concerned about his banker friends (i.e. John Corzine) and his Wall Street connections. KittKatt is on the money about that. Romney wouldn’t be any different.

You want grassroots? It’s shifted to The Ron Paul campaign. All of his donations are from the People. The average donation is under $75. Which means when he receives $5 million in individual donations – thats a whole lotta momma’s and daddy’s opening their wallets.

I don’t see any real difference between Bush & Obama.

The gulf war (1) pissed off a bunch of Muslims. A) We continuously bombed Iraq after declaring a cease to major military operations through no fly zone efforts

    B) We occupied Saudi Arabia (just think if the Chinese occupied the Vatican or all the sports stadiums or had massive aircraft carriers in the Gulf and off the coast of San Diego) and

     C) Our sanctions against the Palestinians (who are 50/50 Christians/Muslims) have caused irreparable damage to their economy and their family life.

A,B, & C are the 3 major reasons why they hit our world trade center. The 9/11 Commission Report talks about the motivations for the attack and these were the reasons listed.

We started all the BS. They just got tired of us and hit us back on September 2001. The concept “blowback” does not just mean retaliation for things our government has done in foreign countries. It refers to retaliation by whatever means for the numerous illegal operations the government has carried out abroad that were deliberately kept secret from the American public. This means that when the retaliation comes — as it did so spectacularly on September 11, 2001 — the American public is unable to put the events into context. So they tend to support acts intended to lash out against the perpetrators, thereby most commonly preparing the ground for yet another cycle of blowback.

Our government then decided to invade 2 countries, one of which had nothing at all to do with 9/11 what so ever. The government still occupies them both. Plus our federal government lead major combat operations against Libya and minor combat operations in over 15 countries between black ops, drone strikes, and back door militia armament.

Blowback is coming whether the government is dropping bombs or not.

And if it’s bad now economically just wait til we starting bombing Iran.

I said major difference. Thats not a major difference since the implemented policy was in place already when Obama got there. He got him and that’s great. I’m glad he did.

Purveyor, I’ve hung on to this paper for quite some time. I’ve always thought because I refuse to give in to tyranny in any form, I would rise to the occasion, if the need arose…
As I’ve watched our citizens disengage from what assaults them on a seeming daily basis, I’ve wondered too if they would find the courage to confront the ones who would subjugate them.

Or would they turn from what they know in their hearts is true Freedom, and succumb to rapacity, the lure this administration dangles before them in order to bring about Socialism?

Why you will give up your guns

2.You are more afraid of the A.T.F. kicking in your door than you are of thieves, robbers, or rapists doing so.
3.You are afraid A.T.F. agents will serve the same type of warrant on your home as they served on the people in Waco.

4.You would rather take your chances with  common criminals than with common Federal agents.
5.You are more afraid of Federal agents driving tanks than gang members driving cars.

6.Your fear of Federal prosecution and prison is stronger than your instinct to protect your family.
7.Your fear of disobeying your Federal masters has caused you to forfeit your rights as a free man under the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

8.You are afraid because you know what happened to those in Communist countries who refused to give up their arms to the government.

The last step in protecting your rights against: U.N. SMALL ARMS TREATY  that Hilary and Barrack have signed onto to….will you stand against the ones who are driven to subjugate you?

    REALITY,

Nice to hear from you.  Is curious that your post coincides nicely with one I wrote on another site…

In the other comment I suggested that Santorum, were he to win, could make an effective President, only if he delays the excess relgio/moral baggage that will only hinder his Presidency.  The next 5 years in American history MUST be about repairing the economic and security damage done, over the past 50-60 years.

If Santorum, allows himself to get sidetracked, so to speak, on socio-moral issues, he will squander his Presidency and, possibly our Nation.  The subsequent 5 years must not dwell on relatively minor, parochial issues.  Furthermore, this admonition applies to the Left, ACLU, Atheists, etc., as well.  They must not burden our Nation with petty nonsense!

The enemy is at the gates, and within!  A Conservative President must NOT allow himself the luxury of distraction.

  • Anonymous

And we burn Jesters just for THOI!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

Purveyor, I have no illusions how this day will start out …
A catalyst will set our public in a tale spin. You will have some citizens who through lack of foresight, have not laid the ground work:
    1. Not knowing their Constitution.
    2. Having seen Authorities as figures to kowtow to.
    3. Not taking the time to know their local councilman, sheriff, etc., forming alliances.

Then you have the vast number of the citizenry who have/ are prepared. Our Constitution wrapping us in patriotic fervor we will resist efforts such as what happened in New Orleans (Katrina).

Think, there are 300 million citizens across the fruited plains, a large percentage choosing to exercise their 2nd. amendment right.
    How would you enforce it?
I personally know as part of Homeland Security, pamphlets are distributed to the local authorities…I also know the vast majority think it is unconstitutional…or usurping the local levels authority. I asked.

Where this Potus makes his mistake is thinking the oath Military and others take is to him…it’s not, it’s to uphold the Constitution, and to United States of America.

My Sheriff states he knows the difference. I made it a point to ask 6 county Sheriffs, to a man they sided with me. Several are retired Military…they know their oath does not stop when they leave the Military.

I firmly believe the Military will not stand with this President, not today anyway.
Give him a few more years of instituting sub par troops, and regulations that serve to undermine our unit cohesion, and you may have a different outcome.

Or his efforts to have a civilian army of his compatriots.
Overseas, while all of our inner turmoil is brewing, you have Iran, China, Russia, other Islamic factions collaborating to take advantage of our inattention, and this Presidents willful disregard of his only true vocation…securing our borders, and protecting us.

Russia and China for the first time are running joint maneuvers, China has upgraded their subs, etc.
What do you think the real aim of Russia’s invasion of our Democratic ally Georgia was about?
Her port…the only access, and strategic place for them to launch….which they still retain control of.

It is not to dismantle our Constitution / Bill of Rights, or Free Enterprise system.
Then the next question is: “Why is he disregarding the will of the people?” In collusion with others of his mindset I might add, and largely by fiat.

Because you have a consortium of traitors who wish to consolidate their power into the hands of a few. It takes destroying the United States to do this.

The next President has to project strength to our enemies. Root out the ones who seek to destroy us, for it is through this strength that we will finally set our house in order.

Then we can restore Constitutional order to our people, and we can get on with what we do best…innovation, industriousness, prosperity, continuity.

I’m in total agreement, this is why I fight so hard to bring these issues to the ignorant. What will you fight them with? Words? He’s squashing all our rights, including speech.

Ya, it’s funny. I click on the “likes” and often see people who you never see posting. This is why we should be ignoring idiots like Vic, strtlk and others who just want to keep our time and attention on their crap instead of our posting pieces that would pull more people to our side. We should just en masse call the site admins at Becks and get these aholes banned, and if not just ignore them and post to enlist to our efforts. Don’t let them distract us at any website.

sloopyinca, I was off a bit on GWB’s debt as I forgot to add in clinton’s debt.  Otherwise I was reasonably accurate.  You want facts?

Reagan’s “two terms started with less than 930 million dollars debt, and ended with a national debt of 2.6 trillion dollars in 1988″
Bush the 1st “left the 1992 national debt at 4 trillion dollars.”

“For three consecutive years, President Clinton was able to pay down the
principle of the national debt. However, interest accrued faster than
the nation can pay, and when he left office in 2000 the national debt sat at 5.67 trillion dollars.

So Bush II started with 5.67 trillion in national debt.   “President George W. Bush left office in Jan 2009, and a national debt of $10.7 trillion dollars”

Bush put in 5.1 trillion in debt.  He nearly DOUBLED the debt!  For Obama to double the debt it would therefore have to be over 21 trillion.

We are just over 15 trillion so Obama is still under 5 trillion in a near depression economy which he has improved.  Stock market at 13,000, a renewed automobile industry and lower taxes (yes he lowered your employment taxes) are a few examples of his improvements.

take a look here for the full facts and figures.

Bill Maher is usually satirically funny and often makes many valid points with his opinions and humor.

All you offer with your weak comment is denial and insults to both him and me.

Free markets and Small government can be debated.  Small isn’t always a good thing.  But that’s your issue, not mine.

As to Patriotism, You can claim it all you want but saying you are a patriot doesn’t make you one.  I would bet 10 thousand dollars (of Mitt Romney’s money :) that I am at least as patriotic as you if not more so.  (unless you served in the armed services.  If you did, you would probably win.  Our soldiers are all patriots for literally defending the country!)

And compassion to a liberal is creating programs that claim to help, but in reality keep people poor and dependent on government. It’s creating job training programs that cost as much as sending someone to Harvard, with no measurable results whatsoever (Job Corps). It’s creating a program like Medicare, that will bankrupt this country, that doesn’t actually reduce health-care costs for seniors, but rather increases the costs of health care for everyone.

It’s things like the minimum wage, which keeps unskilled workers from being hired, but sounds great in a sound bite.

You liberals really pretend to care so much, but if you really cared, you’d take a second to see that you’re programs aren’t working. That the poverty level, which was falling at a percent per year from 1950-68 has stopped falling since the Great Society was created.

You’d look at the reality of history, and see that FDR, who you worship as the man who “ended the depression” – actually extended it for over a decade.

You’d see that all of your government programs don’t work, that they hurt people, and usually hurt the very people you claim to want to help.

I think on some level you think that you’re helping, but you are doing so much damage, and causing the very problems you on some level want to solve.

How about we stop subsidizing EVERY industry?

I think Anthony Gregory sums up Obama fairly concisely. Thing is that many on the left claim to be against all of these things individually, but seem to collectively support them.

“He shoveled money toward corporate America, banks and car manufacturers. He championed the bailouts of the same Wall Street firms his very partisans blamed for the financial collapse. He picked the CEO of General Electric to oversee the unemployment problem. He appointed corporate state regulars for every major role in financial central planning. After guaranteeing a new era of transparency, he conducted all his regulatory business behind a shroud of unprecedented secrecy. He planned his health care scheme, the crown jewel of his domestic agenda, in league with the pharmaceutical and insurance industries. He continued the war in Iraq, even extending Bush’s schedule with a goal of staying longer than the last administration planned. He tripled the U.S. presence in Afghanistan then took over two years to announce the eventual drawdown to bring it back to only double the Bush presence. He widened the war in Pakistan, launching drone attacks at a dizzying pace. He started a war on false pretenses with Libya, shifting the goal posts and doing it all without Congressional approval. He bombed Yemen and lied about it.

He enthusiastically signed on to warrantless wiretapping, renditioning, the Patriot Act, prison abuse, detention without trial, violations of habeas corpus, and disgustingly invasive airport security measures. He deported immigrants more than Bush did. He increased funding for the drug war in Mexico. He invoked the Espionage Act more than all previous presidents combined, tortured a whistleblower, and claimed the right to unilaterally kill any U.S. citizen on Earth without even a nod from Congress or a shrug from the courts.

The left-liberals who stand by this war criminal and Wall Street shill have made their choice: better to have the militarism and police state, so long as it means a little more influence over domestic politics, even if that too is compromised by corporate interference, than it is to embrace a radical antiwar agenda that might complicate their domestic aspirations.”

That’s good. Shameful program that goes back to FDR.

Let’s get rid of the entire Department of Agriculture while we’re at it.

But agriculture Subsidies are only like $30 billion total, and the deficit is $1.8 trillion.

We need to cut much, much more than that, and real cuts, not the Washington insider, cut vs. the baseline cuts, as in, cutting=just raising it less than expected.

We should cut a great deal of military spending – we don’t need to be defending rich countries from their poorer neighbors. But eliminating the military budget altogether does not balance the budget.

But we need to get the entitlements under control. Medicare and social security need to be dealt with. We have an aging population, and when the baby boomers retire en masse, we are going to be in trouble.

How about means testing Medicare and Social Security? People on the left complain about how little the rich pay in taxes (and I will let this one go for now), but then fight like crazy if anyone talks about not paying this richest part of the population a monthly social security check, and paying for health care that they themselves could afford to pay for – all while taking money from the poorest workers in society to pretend to cover it.

The people will stand, with finger raised in salute to the ones who wish to strip us of our identity, our God given freedoms, and liberties.  We will refuse cradle to grave slavery, and spit in the eye of any who side with this totalitarian regime.

Fortunately, our numbers are growing, or I should state we are
forming alliances….using all tools of our disposal to aid our quest in usurping this Commander-in-thief.

This is great.  All he needs to do now is be ten more people and he can be Sheldon Adelson.

This system is broken and corrupt and something needs to be done.

Ron Paul is basically third party because he doesn’t conform for the establishment policies. He might run third party too.

Depends, I’m using “statist” to mean someone who wants the government to control the economy or social policy, not someone who thinks some government is necessary. I actually prefer having no government, but the Constitution is a good first step.

I doubt he is not aware of Ron Paul’s existence.

“1 there are NO mainstream republicans anymore. they all became independent voters.”
What? Are you saying most republicans don’t agree on most issues? That’s what I mean by “establishment republican.”

“2 obama took 3 yrs but he ended the Iraq war. He had a skirmish with Libya getting rid of an evil dictator in a few months and our part in Libya was minor with no casualties. (compare with Bush II’s 10 yr war with Iraq). ”
You can call it whatever you want, he sent military force to another country without congressional approval for whatever reason, which is unconstitutional and an act of war. He also sent troops to Uganda and has already started a war with Iran (sanctions and embargoes are acts of war)

“3 There was less torture if any, and more trials for terrorists after obama took office. Republicans didn’t want trials, remember?”
Less or more, Obama said he would close Gitmo. He didn’t.

“4 Bush came in with 4 trillion national debt and left with about 11 trillion debt”
And his policies have directed us in the wrong direction further.

You’re defending the man who signed the NDAA! He took away your right to a trial. Wake up!

Do you believe that Maher believes that Obama will be convinced by a SuperPac to do a 180 on most of his policies?

1 i mean there are less republican voters and more independent voters who are former republicans.  Also there are no moderate republicans in congress anymore.
2 Presidents can take military action for 2 months without congressional approval.
Carter Reagan Clinton GW Bush also had sanctions and embargoes against Iran.
3 He tried to close Gitmo.  He failed due to republican opposition to non military trials.  No President wins them all.
4  the wrong direction further?  You mean the millions of jobs we gained, the stock market higher than ever before?  Ending a war?  Saving the auto industries?  Ending don’t ask don’t tell?  If those are wrong directions, give me more of them!
5  The National Defense Authorization Act is a United States federal law specifying the budget and expenditures of the United States Department of Defense   The republican house passed that bill as well or Obama could not sign it.   Are you for getting rid of the republicans who passed the same bill obama signed?

Thanks for clarifying, surprised you bothered a few days later. Still, you shouldn’t go around redefining words, though. Depending on the context, either authoritarian or collectivist are more appropriate terms. I see libertarians use “statist” to mean “the set of ideals opposed to their own” all the time, when they are, themselves, almost entirely adherents to some form of statism.
