The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee voted 21-12 Thursday to hold former IRS official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress over her invocation of the Fifth Amendment not to answer any questions in the ongoing scandal over IRS political targeting.
Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said that they “need Ms. Lerner’s testimony to complete our oversight work and bring truth to the American people,” and they took the vote just a day after the House Ways and Means Committee sent a letter to the Justice Department recommending they consider criminal charges for Lerner.
Democrats have denounced the IRS investigations as a partisan witch hunt to the point where Congressman Elijah Cummings angrily denounced Issa’s “absolutely un-American” conduct when he ended a hearing before Cummings could speak.
