John Boehner Will Campaign With Rich Iott, Nazi Reenactor (And Congressional Candidate)

Maybe all that sunbathing has affected John Boehner’s decision-making skills. The House Minority Leader recently announced that this weekend, he will campaign with Ohio Republican Rich Iott—the congressional candidate who made headlines when the media learned that he enjoys dressing up as a Nazi in his spare time.

As The Huffington Post’s Sam Stein reports, Iott and Boehner will appear together at the Lucas County Republican Party headquarters.

“It is, if nothing else, a risky stop for Boehner to make just days before the election,” opines Stein. That sounds like a bit of an understatement to us. Though Iott has tried to persuade the media to stop focusing on his little hobby, our own Jon Bershad may have said it best: “As hated a term as ‘career politician’ has become in this country, it’s probably never going to sound as bad as ‘Nazi sympathizer.’”

That really is incredibly cheap of you. Iott was a WWII reenactor, as well as a WWI and Civil War reenactor. It’s acting, fer chrissakes. Grow up.

Full disclosure: Sometimes when I played Cowboys and Indians as a kid, I was an Indian. And if that doesn’t offend you, I was also a Cowboy sometimes.

  • CosmosDan

Well , Boehner probably already has a Nazi uniform so he doesn’t have to rent one or anything.

  • disenlightened

So what? No one cares. This crap doesn’t work anymore.

  • Big Eddie

Where is Democrat Nazi Collaborator George Soros on this ?

Rich Iott is no worse than some of the Mediaite writers dressing up like journalists

I have to admit that I’m not sure how Nazi re-enactments are included in the curriculum, but Iott claims that he’s spoken to school groups as an educational tool and the “referees” for his game, veterans of the 82nd Airborne, say they’ve “observed no sympathetic comment or actions”. So, as far as I’m concerned, the re-enactor knock shouldn’t hold a lot of water beyond producing a “bad” picture and to continue it could have an effect on the art of costumed interpretation, which theoretically down the road could cost some poor college kid a seat in Congress because they posed as a plantation owner or an overseer for a summer job with the Park Service.

With that said and again, I don’t like commenting on specific races, but in addition to his stances on the issues or the circumstances surrounding the bankruptcy of his family’s business (after it was sold), I think a larger and perhaps more legitimate issue may be the allegation that Iott is “overplaying his military service” and training because he’s never actually been in the military, instead he holds a rank with an unarmed (state sanctioned) volunteer militia.

Though of course, the thrust of the post is a knock on Boehner and that’s a different issue, all together.

Oh, now I click through to the HuffPo and see the update, which says that Boehner is really appearing at a rally to fire-up voters and volunteers. So, once again, Iott may have been overplaying his hand.

And where were the reports about others campaigning for OR with Robert Byrd, former Grand Kleagle of the Ku Klux Klan…and NOT a re-enactor, but a REAL-LIFE KLANSMAN!

    ~crickets~

I’m sick and tired of this. In every Mediaite story that comes along, sooner or later someone in the comments section has to throw in a NAZI reference.

I’m glad I got the joke before I typed in my first knee-jerk response. Funny stuff TF, but hey…this is mine and writer’s job…get your own gig!!

CNN founder Ted Turner dressed up as a CONFEDERATE GENERAL….does that mean he is a racist?

Also Iott dressed on the side of the Union as a civil war re-enacter, but nice try Mediaite writer.

Hillary, are you retarded or did you just fall off the turnip truck? Iott does combat reenactments. Do you know what a combat reenactment is? Hillary, have your caretaker show you how to look it up on Google to avoid appearing like a moron.

I don’t know, that SS uniform might be a little scarry for poor Juan. Couldn’t Lott have not worn the Nazi SS garb and just kept his Nazi sympathy to himself? I mean sure, Lott had the right to celebrate Nazis as a reenactor, but should he have done that since it would cause so much pain to those who lost loved ones at the hands of the Nazis during WW2?

  • Pablo

Valk, it’s a little early for that much ignorance. Have some coffee and take a few minutes of comprehension time.

  • valkyrie101

My next door neighbor (she is 92 now) escaped from Germany before the war and ended up losing many of her family members to SS stormtroopers and the hideous ovens they operated. I guarantee you that she is greatly offended by “SS reenactors”. Of course no one would seek to deprive Lott of his opportunity to dress up as a Nazi, but the question is, with so many people living among us who lost loved ones to Nazis, is that appropriate? And should the possible next speaker of the house be out there supporting people who think it is.

  • Pablo

So, you’re against all war reenactment, then?

    Nazi Reenactor ”

    LOL!

Did Obama or someone from the DNC write this article?

The man is a WWII reenactor you twits!

Just look at these evil bastards! Not the one in the middle, though. He’s a great American hero.

Personally I do not get the “reenacting” impulse, but I am not against anyone engaging in reenacting as a matter of first amendment right. Is it appropriate, however? Isn’t that the argument for opposing the Mosque, that given the feelings of the family members of 911 victims it is inappropriate? And yes Pablo, you have been making that argument here at mediaite. Why the double standard? Their are still millions of people in the U.S. who were alive during the Nazi era, many of whom, like my next door neighbor, lost family members to SS ovens, and they continue to be offended by anything that resembles celebrating Nazis. Does Lott care about their feelings? Does Boner? As for Civil War reenactments, that is much different since there is no one from the civil war era still alive.

They’re generally history buffs, recreating historic events.

Uh, a war reenactment isn’t a building in lower Manhattan. It’s a transient event and no one has to watch it that would rather not.

And yes Pablo, you have been making that argument here at mediaite. Why the double standard?

You’re going to have to do a better job of explaining that double standard because so far, you haven’t.

Their are still millions of people in the U.S. who were alive during the Nazi era, many of whom, like my next door neighbor, lost family members to SS ovens, and they continue to be offended by anything that resembles celebrating Nazis.

Reenactments don’t do that. You know the Nazis lost the war, right? Maybe we should never mention WWII again, because that’s just giving the Nazis publicity and that might offend people. Does that sound right to you? It’s the argument you’re making, so it should. Do you want to let The History Channel know they’re going to have to shut down?

Does Lott care about their feelings? Does Boner?

What feelings are those? I have yet to hear a holocaust survivor take a position on war reenactments.

Comrade Hillary should go back to journalism school. Mediaite already has a surfeit of brainless attack-chicks.

So you do not consider reenacting Nazi SS engagements are in bad taste? What if they get rid of the guns, since that is not what SS troops are most famous for, and incorporated some hypodermic needles, scapels, and sodium pentathal?

  • valkyrie101

How about some ovens, would that add to the realism for you history buffs?

When Iott does his WWII re-enactments, he asssumes the roll of a soldier of the 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking. The 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking was a COMBAT unit of the Waffen SS. Stop being an idiot.

Your not cool with a Mosque two blocks away from ground zero because it might offend 911 victim’s families but you have no problem with Congressional candidates dressing up as Nazi SS troops in the local park. Yea, OK, I’m an idiot. Right.

  • Pablo

Where’s there a Congressional candidate dressing up as a Nazi? It ain’t Rich Iott.
