Operation Cupcake: British Intelligence Replaced Al Qaeda’s Online Bomb Making Guide With Recipes

Taking on Al Qaeda has been an arduous, draining task for our nation and for our allies, but who’s to say you can’t have a little bit of light-hearted fun while ridding the world of terrorists who’d like to see us all someday annihilated?

Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service (known also as “MI6″) and The Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) recently struck against Al Qaeda’s online magazine by replacing instructions for making a homemade bomb “in the Kitchen of your Mom” – the magazine, as you can tell, targets impressionable teens… or perhaps middle-aged people who don’t get out much – with garbled code that, when sorted out, turns out to be a cupcake recipe originally published by Ellen Degeneres‘ talk show:

Written by Dulcy Israel and produced by Main Street Cupcakes in Hudson, Ohio, it said “the little cupcake is big again” adding: “Self-contained and satisfying, it summons memories of childhood even as it’s updated for today’s sweet-toothed hipsters.”

It included a recipe for the Mojito Cupcake – “made of white rum cake and draped in vanilla buttercream”- and the Rocky Road Cupcake – “warning: sugar rush ahead!”

Hackers also removed articles by former Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, his colleague Ayman al-Zawahiri, as well as a piece about “What to expect in Jihad.”

Al Qaeda was eventually able to reissue the magazine.

Should have been a nice BBQ’d Pork Rib recipe.

    BS.

The AQ “magazine” (PDF actually) contained a US government trojan payload that installed on the reader’s computer when opened. It was used to track would-be and actual AQ sympathizers.

    Geez!

Gah, there’s no such thing as a sugar rush or a sugar high. People need to stop letting this food-cop idea seep into everything food-related.

    This is gold right here.

Just imagine what it must have been like to be almost done with the recipe only to find you have made an instrument of destruction, but a tasty treat to hand out!
