Rep. Eric Cantor: Disaster Relief Funds Must Be Offset With Spending Cuts Elsewhere

Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is eager to keep a lid on government spending, but in the aftermath of deadly tornados ripping through Missouri, the need for disaster relief funds will likely grow. The budget-conscious Cantor isn’t prepared to hold back granting such funds, but is warning that it will have to be offset with spending cuts elsewhere.

Cantor stated “if there is support for a supplemental, it would be accompanied by support for having pay-fors to that supplemental.” The term “pay-fors” means either tax increases or spending cuts, and given the fact that the Republican leadership has repeatedly stated they will not support raising taxes, that leaves only the cutting option. And since President Obama has already pledged whatever federal resources are necessary to help the victims in Missouri, it seems another budget battle might be looming sooner than expected.

If Barack Obama does not go to Hawaii for christmas just think of all the relief money that will free up. He is wasting precious taxpayer money.

  • BatBoy

    How about this little rule.

When you REDUCE $2, you get to spend a new $1.

  • im_lovin_it

Oh this is a juicy one. I couldn’t wait for this to show up on this site. Perhaps this thread will look like this?

O/T. A few stories you won’t see covered at Mediaite today….

    1. ‘Respected’ Snowbilly adviser Rebecca Mansour ripping the Palin kids in emails…. Oh the humanity, can’t we just leave the kids out of it!!!!!!

    2. New Jersey Fats with a 40% job approval in his home state… still a ‘serious’ contender for President though.

** but anything that rips Media Matters, Olbermann or a liberal who speaks ill of the snowbillies… will be covered immediaitely!!!!

Wow. The compassion just rolls off that guy in waves. Putting lives and real people on the trading block for his pathetic partisan hackery. Maybe Mr. Cantor needs to grow up just a little and realize that there are things that we do without trades and qualifications.

Using the horror the good people of Joplin are living right now as some sort of political show and trading item is reprehensible at best. I wonder how he would feel if it was his home that was gone.

Party notwithstanding, Cantor represents the absolute worst of American politics and the partisan nonsense that is driving this country to ruin.

Congratulations! You have just qualified for the Eric Cantor Idiocy Award!

First off, Obama pays for the costs of vacations as does every president.
Second, I don’t hear Cantor offering up any of his perks or pay or overpaid staff as cuts.
Third – seriously? That is what you have. Partisan hackery to try to blunt partisan cruelty?

  • Jackie_Treehorn

Agreed Cantor….let’s pull some of GE’s and Big Oil’s tax breaks and put it towards the relief effort.

Oh Republicans are more concerned about NPR, Planned Parenthood and PBS? Yup you guys are all for Middle America.

  • tatboy

    He should resign now…

“Let’s see it,” a frustrated Sen. Jeff Sessions said on the Senate floor Monday afternoon. “Let’s bring it forward.”

By “it,” Sessions meant a Democratic proposal for a 2012 federal budget. In recent days Sessions, the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, has been asking, pushing, pleading, cajoling and begging Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to put forward a Democratic plan. So far, Reid has steadfastly refused.

That’s nothing new. The last time the Senate passed a budget was April 29, 2009, which was, if you are counting — and Jeff Sessions is — 755 days ago.

Passing a yearly budget for the federal government is a fundamental responsibility of Congress. Lawmakers do not have to spend their time naming post offices or passing health care reform. But they do have to pass a budget. In 2010, neither the House nor the Senate did so. It’s not that members just didn’t get around to it, which would have been scandalous enough. No, Reid and then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi feared that passing a budget would hurt their chances in the November midterm elections. So they did nothing and took a beating at the polls anyway.

And in other news, the GOP calls for all future disasters to be carefully scheduled through the Congress and to reduce damage levels to fit within budgetary guidelines. They’ve also called for a Congressional task force to legislate that such disasters cause fewer injuries to reduce the costs to health care. Cantor also noted that such storms were a Democratic plot hatched by Obama to create public sympathy for the victims and further expand public spending.

  • timzank

Democrats keep writing checks and they haven’t passed a budget in 755 days. If your furnace breaks down do you borrow the money to replace it from a neighbor or give up maybe a vacation or a new car to pay for the new furnace?

Those of us that are sane would give up something else to pay for the repair, the democrats would rather call China and borrow more money.

The mindset you people have that the money will just never run out is absolutely mind boggling.

So far, spending cuts have only applied to the poor, elderly, and disabled, courtesy of both parties. Whatever they cut will definitely not affect DC politicians or Wall Street.

Turns out General Electric, which had $14.2 billion in profits last year, pays no taxes, either, according to a news report. But no one is calling CEO Jeffrey R. Immelt names. And he won’t be doing time in a cell: President Obama made him a liaison to the business community and appointed him to lead the president’s council on jobs and competitiveness.

Keeva, do you think the government can spend without raising the money first? This is what Joe Lieberman kept saying about Iraq. You can’t just have a war. You have to plan to pay for it. Do you just buy things on credit you can’t afford? Of course not. The hacks in this scenario are the politicians who talk about how much they care for “the people” and then ruin “the people’s” country with debt. This kind of spending ensures that our children will live in a less competitive country.

Oh please! One of the reasons that we pay taxes is so that relief funds are, available when needed. This smug little prick and his party of money whores like to pretend that they’re protecting YOU from tax increases but, again last week the entire Republican party voted to keep YOUR tax dollars going to oil companies in subsidies. They hold YOUR tax cuts hostage to get their. Wake up baggers! You’re being fleeced by these pretentious Republicans who realize that you’re still stupid enough to keep voting for them because you hate Obama. They’ve even come up with a way to continue their earmarks by calling them “member requests”. Sooner or later the rest of you will wake up and realize you’ve been had. Perhaps tonight’s NY 26 race will be the start of their down fall. I can’t wait to watch Boner handing Nancy Pelosi back her modest gavel in January of 2013. This is going to be fun!

In general I agree, but this is not in general. This is a real emergency and an American one. It is one thing to make this arguement about the loony spending both sides do. This is not that case. This is a primary role of government – protecting the people. It is not some goofy program.

As to your other question, no. Most families do not buy what they cannot afford unless it is an emergency. And to continue this worn out metaphor, Joplin is an American family emergency. Do you skip needed surgery because it is not in budget?

Both parties have run up a huge debt on questionable spending but helping fellow Americans when a natural disaster has taken everything is not questionable. Protecting huge corporate tax loopholes is questionable yet Cantor did just that and now would deny the good people of Joplin the help they need and deserve rather than touch those tax breaks.

Sorry, but your argument is as hollow and empty as Cantor’s compassion and humanity.

It is really silly of Eric Cantor to think of such things. I know that last month, when our refrigerator went belly up and all of the food inside of it was ruined, we as a family had to tighten the old belt and skip restaurant meals, movies and some other extra purchases to make up for the loss.
The thought of government operating with such solid budget principals is ridiculous.

apparently, following Liberal “logic”, I have a right to know… and to demand more…

please explain what you mean that “following liberal login, you have a right to know” how much money people donate.

It was just a comment based on the Liberal affinity for spending other people’s money… and the short sightedness of the kneejerk reaction to solving problems by throwing other people’s money at that problem…

if that’s the way you want to look at it, it would make the conservative view just a big fu to people with problems.
makes it a bit difficult when we look at our problems with a “this or that ” kinda logic.

or as jon stewart would say “either your dick is too small or you’re too fat to see it.”

sure you could put it that way…if you didn’t even read the article. or if you did, you must be in favor of this…

“What he doesn’t mention is that Ryan’s proposal also includes dropping the top tax rate for rich people from 35 percent to 25 percent. All by itself, that one change means that the government would be collecting over $4 trillion less over the next ten years.”

it’s hard to understand why you get behind these people who are using you.

Let me guess,”KILL NPR! KILL Planned Parenthood! KILL the E.P.A! We need to offset the disaster relief funds with spending cuts dammit. It’s a matter of national security!” I’m sure the Democrats are eager to fight this fight. Republicans will probably end up caving on the debt ceiling anyways. Just like they did on the budget. First he defeats the whiny birthers, then he takes down Osama bin Laden and now the rats are jumping the sinking ship(Ryan’s “Medicare Killer” Plan). I already donated 20$. I’ll probably donate more later on. Screw those five bottles of Whiskey i was planning on buying!

In general I agree, but this is not in general. This is a real emergency and an American one. It is one thing to make this arguement about the loony spending both sides do. This is not that case. This is a primary role of government – protecting the people. It is not some goofy program.
    . . .
Sorry, but your argument is as hollow and empty as Cantor’s compassion and humanity.

You are evading the issue? The question was: “do you think the government can spend without raising the money first?” I guess you already had an answer you wanted to give (from the heart, no doubt) so you just avoided the question entirely. Are you saying “yes, government can spend without raising the money first”? If so, then where does the money come from? I’ll tell you. It ends up being borrowed from the Chinese. Are you saying “no, you can’t spend what you have not raised”? This is the real world. Oh, quit crying about the victims in Missouri. I’m not saying the government should not help. Let’s just build a few less bombs and rockets, and maybe cut a few government handouts to the Sherrods of the world. The deficit must be considered at all times. We are in crisis mode much more here than in Missouri.

Not evading at all. In the case of actual emergencies like this, we borrow the money. Not a question…an answer. In the case of most government spending, raise the money first then spend it, I am all for that. But to make that point in an actual emergency caused by a natural disaster is simply wrong. As far as the real world, I did not hear one peep from these newly minted deficit hawks when it was time to do 2 wars or a massive unpaid for tax cut. Not a single peep about paying for it. In fact, the dubious Mr. Cantor’s opposition to bailing out Wall Street was not the deficit but his concern about government in private industry (he was right about that by the way.)

If you look at the record almost all of these lying Congress Creeps that now claim to be oh so concerned about the deficit didn’t say a thing until last year. Not a word until it became an issue that worked politically. They spent their tiny brains out for over 10 years and only stopped when embarrassed into it by an angry electorate.

So, my point about the ever nauseating Mr. Cantor was and is that he is a hypocrite of the first order who significantly overpays his very large staff and in only now concerned about the deficit and has the audacity to use the plight of the good people of Joplin to his political gain. My original post was that Cantor is disgusting. I stand by that.

As far as not crying for the folks in Joplin, are you serious? They need and deserve the help of the rest of this nation if we are to be the people we claim to be. Or are we to become the heartless actuaries that you seem to be? Sure the deficit matters, but not nearly as much as the lives of real, breathing Americans in need.

By the way, Cantor and Ryan want to further lower taxes on their patrons without making matching cuts. Explain that. And spare me the trickle down lie. 8 years later, it still doesn’t work. If we have to “raise the money,” as you put it then we have to get it somewhere and closing corporate tax loopholes is a good place to start. Raising money does mean raising taxes and not just making symbolic and relatively minor spending cuts. You know that, right?

  • david r

Of course we help the people in Joplin. And spend every nickel we can to give them a chance to get on their feet. But I do look at it like an actuary, though I only work with them on occasion. (Eerie choice of words on this end.) The deficit does not care what causes the expense. The Oklahoma Bombing, Katrina, Joplin, etc. are all the same. We must be aware of it at all times or it will consume us. I for one think we spend too much on military adventures. The other points you raise I largely agree with. Bush was a disaster for the deficit. To this day, the GOP only pays lip service to the deficit. Their ranks are full of hypocrites. And this “No new taxes!” crap has been disastrous. Here in Texas we had an arsonist torch our treasured Governor’s Mansion. While I have friends in New Orleans with older and grander homes, it was an irreparable loss. We are spending millions to salvage and restore what we can, and turn the rest into new construction. Back when Ann Richards was Governor, we had a half dozen people guarding the place. In ’08 when the arson occurred, with “no new taxes Rick Perry” at the helm, there was one guy looking at a TV monitor who guarded the place at night. “No new taxes” does not equate to dollar for dollar savings at the state or national level. The country needs to reduce spending.

    David R -

I think you and I agree more than we disagree. Florida now has a governor that is following the lead of thinking that lower taxes equals more revenue. He will be a disaster for Florida and probably leave us far worse off than when he took office.

I am not a fan of taxes at all, since I own my own business, but I recognize that things cost money and it has to come from somewhere. And there is no one line simple answer, contrary to what the fools on Capitol Hill and the pundocracy claim.

What ever happened to the CBO report that listed over $100 billion in wasteful redundancies in the federal government? Where is the Congress on cutting that out? Note that the now enshrined Paul Ryan budget never balances. Never. Not once over the entire plan. It runs at a deficit year after year to provide tax cuts where none are appropriate.

One solution Ryan never mentions is to means test Medicare and Social Security as both were originally intended.

What I find most amusing is that the hero of clowns like Ryan and Cantor, Ronald Reagan, actually raised taxes to try to pay for his defense build up. Several times. As did Bush 1 and Clinton to keep paying for it. And they managed to lead us to a balanced budget. By carefully raising taxes and carefully trimming spending.

I await the blast of those who revise history to suit mythology.

    Keeva–

The health care issue is still unresolved, despite the passage of Obamacare. Here is where state and federal governments can save billions. People end up using the ER as a primary care physician. These expenses go into the rate base for all of us health insurance consumers. I think the federal government needs to do like the British did after WW-II. Acquire and maintain cheap government clinics in poor neighborhoods, with specialist care available at VA hospitals. Obamacare is a bunch of Utopian crap. Basically, Obama got out the nation’s credit card and bought private health insurance for everyone. Record profits for big medical and pharmaceutical corporations. And the Big Lie is that everyone must pay premiums. Constitutionality aside, we all know the deadbeats wont pay. So all their expenses will be borne by others. (What is new?) Somewhere in the debate, “cheap clinics” got equated to “public option,” which became radioactive. The public option does not bother me. I have my own health insurance. I’m not going to the cheap government clinic. But anyway, this is where we are.

  • http://www.swissarmyjew.com Keeva

    David R –

Look closely at the health care law. The only part that is really bad is the mandate. The idea of exchanges is not new and the idea of assistance is not new. There are no government clinics in there. What has gone into effect has been good – no more pre-existing denials, students kept on parent’s insurance, fixing the Medicare prescription program.

Government already pays for almost all health insurance via tax credits and deductions – both personal and corporate. The idea that Obama is starting to pay for health insurance is the biggest lie of all. Congress has already been paying via tax code.

I have my own insurance as well and had to fight to get it because of a pre-existing condition. One that has been in total control for over 15 years. And I deduct 100 percent of my premiums. Thus government paid insurance.

What would work would be allowing more private inexpensive clinics like Solantic to open in inner cities. They provide reasonably affordable care on a walk in basis. Government owned clinics would be a very bad thing. Government is inherently inefficient where private business is always more efficient.

Do not touch VA except to improve it. Veterans deserve better treatment than they are getting.

If billionaire’s homes were destroyed in a natural catastrophe, would Eric Cantor still say funds for helping those who lost so, so much would need to be replaced with matching fund cuts somewhere else in the Federal Budget.

These Republicans are idiots. And finally the working class people are waking up to see just how little they really are in their eyes. I for one am glad that we have a bunch of people like Eric Cantor and Paul Ryan on the republican ship.Because they are going to sink it and their entire crew will be extinct beneath the waves. Hopefully never to be heard from again. Blurp blurp bubble bubble.

What happened is this. The repubs used to romance their sheeples. But they got cocky this time. Thought them sheeples were beyond stupid. Didnt use the romance, just tried ta boink em no rubber or vaseline. That hurt the sheeples and now they are mad.

  • http://Mediaite.com uggugg

Yes we could offset the Missouri Natural Catastrophe relief with the ridiculous tax benefits Eric Cantor gave his Billionaire Buddies recently. I don’t understand how the naive voters in the Tea Party put up with these types of shenanigans from the Republican Party they boast to have voted for. That Sarah Palin spell put over the Tea Party must be a cult like magic. Maybe if voters had to take a voter test something like an automobile driver test we could end up with less financial carnage like the mess that was handed to Obama when he took the Presidency. The test would need to be exact knowledge of the past 10 years of American Financial History to past the test to vote. Wow! That would be a cat’s meow.

  • CarmanK

Some about one put an apostrophe in Eric Cantor’s last name and I really think it applies to him. Eric Can’tdor is just about right. He can’t seem to do anything right these days. He led his party down the deep hole and this time the dems are not bailing him out. It is a no brainer about paying for relief for the tornado and MS flood victims, just get rid of the BIG OIL subsidies and spend it on human relief. WHEN in the last 28 years have the republicans been right on fiscal matters?? TRICKLE DOWN-No, DEREGULATION-No, Cutting taxes for the rich-NO, starting two wars and not paying for them. And what is even worse their priorities are really screwed up. W defunded the group dedicated to the search for Osama bin Laden. there is really something seriously wrong with republican fiscal policies that have failed to produce more for less, and oh year privatization of govt services “would save TP dollars”, now that was a Pinocchio sized lie. Prince of Blackwater and Halliburton can attest to that republican miscalculation. Before you listen to anything republicans have to say about money matters, you really need to do some homework. You don’t have to dig far before the truth surfaces.
