Touré Did NOT Defend Chris Brown, And He Has Every Right To Be Pissed At Mediaite

Earlier this morning, Mediaite posted a story that misinterprested a Tweet by Touré, saying he was defending Chris Brown. Moments later, a torrent of Tweets and emails came flowing in, correcting our error. It was shoddy journalism on our part; a look at his feed before and after the comment would have confirmed his true intention — criticizing Brown.

We want to stress that this was an error. A stupid, lazy error that should never have happened. And it’s inexcusable. We’re putting this apology out with greater force than the original story, and can only hope that Touré accepts our sincerest apologies.

In an effort to equal the manner in which we misrepresented Touré, I am re-publishing some Tweets directed at Mediaite. It is shameful and sad, but they are absolutely true. This was, to put it bluntly, shitty journalism. We can only promise that we will do our best to make sure this error is rectified to the fullest, and put all possible resources towards making sure it does not happen in the future.

Clearly, Mediaite is racist. There is no other possible explanation.

This was bound to happen sooner or later with Mediaite, I honestly don’t think the editors at Mediaite do anything, they certainly don’t edit. Maybe Dan needs to clean house. They have hired a lot of people in the past year, maybe some of them aren’t working out so well.

At least you apologized to Toure’. It’s interesting that you cannot Google cache the article. Hopefully some other watchdog site saved it.

I read it and didn’t comment I thought it was racist.

Mediaite does something wrong, and what do they do? They apologize.

It would be interesting if this caught on with other news organizations…

    Where is the original story?

  • Anonymous

Yeah I am sure it had nothing to do with Toure’ tweeting about lawsuits. They wiped the article from Google Cache too. It was the “oh look at the blacks defending the blacks no matter what”. It was lazy, and was the sort of thing that appeals to a lot of the readers here who can’t even hide their racism.

Toure’ put CB on blast when this thing came out, I remember him talking about it on MSNBC. Seriously they should fire the writer that wrote this. Unbelievable laziness mixed with race bating is not a good combo for a major media site.

    Dear Mediaite,

You may want to rethink your policy about framing an entire story over a tweet.

Same James Crugnale that said a chick on the view was “calling” Chris Brown a model for youth last week. But she was commenting on Brown’s own quote..he said that, not her.

Sup with you James…comprehension is kinda part of your job, seriously.

  • Ben

    yup

Why did Nando write the apology and not James?

I wish all retractions were like this one.  I would love to read the New York Times issue a front page story apologizing for all their “shitty journalism” over the past 10 years.

Great question. Nando is an amazing journalist. My fantasy football season last year was very sucessful because of that dude.

Right on you. If only other news media would take a tip and also own up to being wrong.,

Sucks to be James.  Instant visibility is a blessing and a curse.  Good luck with all that!

LOL Mediaite covering for their racist agenda against whites, once again.

CM Punk is going to kick Chris Brown’s ass.

Congrats Mediaite for doing the right thing and owning up to a mistake without sugarcoating it.  Don’t ever expect to see Fox copy this behavior, but then again shitty journalism (propaganda) is their stock and trade.

sloppy journalism is in your established modus operandi, why should you bow down to the favorite oba’mao’ shoe shine boy toure, what a bunch of cowards,

After all of Tommy Christopher’s imaginative spew against all things conservative?  After he drags right leaning politicians and personalities through the mud pretty much daily…   John Wilson get’s embarrassed by his peers at Mediaite for writing an article which was misinterpreted by some readers and in no time the article vanishes pulled by the censors at Mediaite and John is embarrassed in such a public manner. Why is it that John is not printing an apology and retraction, did you guys fire him on the spot? In the comment thread he explained that the article did not accuse Toure of defending Brown, but rather he asserted the opposite…

Wow! when will we see Tommy’s rants censured by Mediaite?  Oh! That’s right, NEVER because Tommy never offends the sensibilities of the LEFT!

You will not be part of the American infotainment machine today until your name gets dragged through the mud a few more times.  Keep up the good work, you’re getting it done.

What a racist comment.  I’m sure you don’t see it though.

I must say that the spelling and syntax errors have been greatly reduced since the departure of Colby Hall. Perhaps that’s because he’s not writing here anymore. Or maybe someone is actually editing.

    ha!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Imnot-Tim/100002377097501 Imnot Tim

exactly, kinda ruins the apology if we dont understand what theyre apologizing for.

Hard to type that symbol in his name. Does he have a real name?

Toure, what a clown! Can the guy read???

  • david r

I thought surely Mediaite was not racist.  I’m going to have to take some time to deal with this.

  • Anonymous

    Toure is Chris Brown.

  • david r

     They know their place.

Frances is the worst! She’s the only one that bothers me because she’s so unprofessional and just writes her column ver batim from the vid she attached. She writes rude stuff to people in the comment sections and must only spend about two minutes on each article as you never get analysis or even coherence. Sometimes the grammar and spelling errors are so bad the article leaves you wondering what she was even trying to say.

I hope Nando writing the article doesn’t mean James is fired. Everyone makes mistakes. He should’ve written the apology himself but Nando did it perfectly here. Humble and honest is the way to go. I bet Toure forgives.

The site has changed for the better since Colby Hall left. I emailed him about a year ago after Mediaite posted a story based on an entirely wrong premise — that employment numbers were up because of hiring binge by McDonald’s. Except those hirings wouldn’t be counted in the jobs report until the following month, which other media outlets got right. The mistake was bad enough — basing a story on a huge error. But even after it was called to the editors’ attention, they refused to take it down. Instead, they posted in the comments section that we weren’t allowed to criticize their reporters! Complete amateurs. Correcting their mistakes is the first step toward redemption. And to those of you who say that mainstream newspapers refuse to correct mistakes, then obviously you don’t read newspapers.

     Just 10 years?

Well, I can only guess at this, but that guess is: this apology, in not describing or linking to what the hell you’re talking about is much worse than the original error. Are you going to apologize for this, too?

I would ask how a group of people could all decide that posting this apology while leaving readers in the dark was OK. But I won’t ask that because, after all, this is a group of people who decided that “Mediaite” was a good name for a Web site.
