Lady Things: What The Media’s Reaction To Marianne Gingrich’s Interview Tells Us About Women

videos

Marianne Gingrich‘s upcoming interview with ABC News is interesting not so much for what she has to say about Newt Gingrich, but for the reaction her decision has inspired, particularly given that it comes at what is widely regarded as a crucial moment in the Republican primary race. South Carolina is where the strong survive, the weak perish, and ex-spouses come forward with sensational tales of marriages that are pried open, slammed shut, or left dangling precariously off the edge of a cliff.

For those who’ve yet to see it, here’s the the Nightline preview:

To say reaction to Marianne’s interview has been mixed is apt, as commenters have expressed wrestling with conflicting ideas about the interview rather than leaning entirely one way or the other.

Take, for instance, radio host Rush Limbaugh‘s response. “Everybody,” he told his listeners, “has an angry ex-spouse.” At this point, he argued, it’s a part of our national culture, and he is not about to jump forward with an opinion one way or the other on Marianne’s claims at this point in the game, nor is he about to irrevocably condemn Newt.

RELATED: Limbaugh Sticks Up For Newt Gingrich: ‘Everybody Has An Angry Ex-Spouse’

Have a listen:

Compare that with the reaction of today’s Fox News “power panel.” Below:

I don’t think it’s beside the point to note that the three panelists weighing in on a story about marriage and infidelity are women: Former White House press secretary and current The Five co-host Dana Perino, radio host Monica Crowley, and Jehmu Greene, former president of the Women’s Media Center.

Perino sees Marriane’s revelation as a testimony on her ex-husband’s character. In this light, her story is “fair game” given Newt’s previous attacks on rival candidate Mitt Romney. Plus, Perino adds, there are still many voters who were not aware of Newt’s infidelity. “Voters in South Carolina,” she said, “women in particular, probably won’t take to this too well. Crowley, meanwhile, notes that, although much of the information Marianne shares was revealed previously in men’s magazine Esquire (an “elitist” publication, says Greene), being able to hear Marianne tell her story in her own words and being able to see her expression packs more of an “emotional wallop.” And Greene felt that, in such cases, a media outlet should allow time for a candidate to respond to the allegations or claims being brought against him (or her). Then again, she noted, “Gingrich is the guy who said ‘bring it on.’”

The snippet ABC chose to release, then, deals with not only with Newt’s infidelity during his marriage to Marianne — which, as noted, is something that has been made public before — but specifically with the perceived callousness and coldness with which he handled his adultery. This isn’t a philanderer, as Marianne paints him, but an unabashed philanderer, a philanderer with no sense of shame or remorse.

It’s tempting to see her as the “angry ex-spouse,” or as the bitter woman scorned, and there may be some morsels of truth within these broad generalizations. She might feel bitterness, yes, she might feel scorned. But she isn’t a cartoon or a poorly-written character in TV movie (yet!). She is matter-of-fact. She’s had years and years to replay the end of her marriage, to move on or to choose not to, to make amends or live with the unforgivable. The “emotional wallop,” then, doesn’t come from Marianne herself, but exists within the viewer.

That the panel consisted entirely of women and that women voters are specifically mentioned — and that it has not been Newt, but his two adult daughters, who have responded to the interview — is all very telling, because it effectively frames the interview as being primarily of interest and relevance to women, as if men can’t have a visceral, emotional reaction to infidelity or divorce, or as if “character issues” as when applied to personal relationships don’t matter as much. The question is not then, why should we care about Marianne’s interview, but whom she — and ABC, and all of us covering the story — expect to care about it.

I don’t think she really understood that Il Nuce was asking for a three way.

What a great choice Republicans have on Saturday: The smug, ruthless, narcissistic serial philanderer with no core or the smug, soulless, out-of-touch serial flip-flopper with no core?

  • The Real Royal Emperor

The Half-Baked Alaskan and Tollbooth are supporting the former. That tends to make me think the latter must be the correct choice.

The two worst words you could possibly hear at a swingers party are, “Newt’s here.”

  • Anonymous

Why don’t we just call the story what it really is….?
A super sleazy cheap attempt to knock Gingrich out of the race.
Brian Ross is a pimp , a circus barker and a White House puppet, not a journalist.

ABC is whole heartedly snowplowing for Barack Obama and everyone knows it.
Why don’t they do a story on how Bill Clinton has not seen his own wife naked in about ten years…?
At least Gingrich had the honesty to leave and marry his new girlfriends while the DNC  heroes of ABC, The Clintons merely continued their sham marriage for political expediency.

  • Anonymous

I have a lot of thoughts about Marianne Gingrich- none of which are flattering to her.

Among other things, wasn’t SHE the woman who was his mistress and broke up his first marriage? I think the Gingrich daughters are being especially kind not to slam this woman- the one who broke up their mother’s marriage to their father.

Secondly, after hearing an email today from a woman whose husband died of MS, I remembered a friend of my husband’s, who was one of the meanest, most sarcastic men I’ve ever met. He was constantly angry and belittled his poor wife all of the time, even though she was his caretaker- he was bitter and angry all of the time. My husband swore to me that he had not been like that before he became ill, but I never saw the friend my husband described. Instead, I saw a vicious, angry, bitter man. His death was a release for his long-suffering wife. Chronic illness can completely change a person, and I think the Gingrich daughters are showing great kindness in not excoriating their father’s second wife. I feel sorry for Marianne Gingrich, but her timing is sooo obvious, sooo overtly political that it’s embarrassing to her and to ABC- that “bastion” of “truth” when it comes to Democrat politicians- can we say Stephanopolus???

Lastly, this is all old news. Gingrich has admitted his flaws and asked for forgiveness from those who matter- his family and his God. It is not for me or for ABC to judge him. If the Catholic Church has found him worthy of membership and partaking in Communion, I am NOT going to pretend that I, a sinner myself, have the right to judge his past actions, for which he has made amends and is contrite.

Again i ask – wasnt she a mistress too?  wasnt she involved in newts open marriage to his first wife?

SO…Same sex marriage is a HUGE threat to the institution of marriage? You’re okay with serial adulterers though?

If anything threatens marriage, it is those who do not take their wedding vows seriously.

I just find I hate myself more and more thinking that three women have decided that marrying Gingrich is a good idea. I gotta get out more.

    Well played.

    Very good, indeed.

Straight people divorce at a rate of well over 50% – we are not doing such a good job at protecting the sanctity of marriage.

Maybe its time to give gay people a shot at it – I mean, they can’t do much worse.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Thank you. She is also a home breaker.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

And that exonerates the Newt how? Is it like my Aunt Byrle? Of her son, she often said, “Poor Beau. Trashy women are attracted to him.” So, only trashy women are atrracted to Newton Leroy Gingrich. Trashy, home-breaking mistresses?

There are seven accounts of women being abused by Clinton.
Juanita Broddick was a brutal attack, an one that can best be described as
brutal forced entry, with a bite on the lip that was so vicious that blood
poured from the wound. This is the act of a madman. These are recorded in the
Congressional records. These are not made up stories of Horror that one can
read the book and lay down, they are stories of women abused by a powerful man
and abandoned by the democratic party, left to suffer a chronic bleeding heart.
These women story rivals the horrors found in King’s books.

     There you aware that
a young lawyer, that is prominent in the democratic party was entrained in a
harsh fashion  by Wild Bill. Her husband
told the governor, if he ever came near his wife again he would help Bill  find eternal peace. Bill stutters and said,
sorry. Sorry! He can only thank his pagan Gods that was not my wife, my
daughter. No man, No Government, or Principality can stop the justice being
administered by a grieving father for the loss of his daughter innocence at the
hands of a man who considers himself untouchable. I would have screamed so loud
that the gates of Hades would rattle and shake till this man paid the price for
    his crimes.

     One of the women was
paralyzed with fear will Bill exercised
her top organs for forty-five minutes while Hillary was sleeping across
the aisle on Air Force one. This is not a made up story but is a sworn
    affidavit in the Congressional Records.

     Willey did not ask
for it. For you to insult these women in this manner because of your bias
belief is inexcusable.“Conscience is the dog that can’t bite, but never stops
barking.”, {1}These attacks are not going to go away they are burned on the
Conscience of our nation ,we let a man guilty of forced entry a mad man set in
the white house after this was put on record.

     My loyalty goes
toward the law and the innocence not a powerful man who looks on women as a toy
to be abused, used and thrown in a corner like a dirty wash cloth. Why were
there no men of honor at the time of Clinton? This story of the bitter ex wife
pales  in comparision to the story of
Clinton. Where was the yellow dog journalist of ABC on Clinton story?

     ”A moment comes,
    which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new;
when an age ends; and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds
utterance.”Jawaharlal Nehru Its time to purge the nation’s soul and
condemn the acts of Clinton and banish him out of public life as we do not have
the courage or the morals that will arrest, try and put in in a box where he
can not abuse and forcibly enter again.

     Has all members of
the media sold their soul for a fleeting political idea that changes with the
tides of time? This government may fall, and another rise, but the sins of a
man live forever. What you are doing to Cain while letting Bill ride on a could
of undeserved honor is a sin on your soul that can not be washed away

Where were your voice for the women while Bill Clinton abused women? No where, your are hypocrites? You preach you are for gay rights but when a poor gay man was attacked by Obama and Biden thugs your voice was silence. Larry Sinclair deserves to be heard. Write ABC and demand they do a two hour interview with this poor Gay man.

  • Anonymous

Hide your women, they are in danger of being molested, Clinton has arrived. By the way age does not matter be sure your daughters are locked up. You can also hear
Obama and Larry are here, Make sure we have plenty of coke for their ride home.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

    Whatever ….

  • Anonymous

Where were you when a young gay man was begging for justice. Did ABC and you demand that Obama and Biden thugs leave him alone and tell his story. You were silence on the issue so you voice is of no value. Larry Sinclair offered ABC an exclusive on his filing with the Chicago Police Department. You were also silence while Bill Clinton abused women. Seven accounts on file. How can you raise your voice in a failed marriage while letting the others slide.? ABC can also air a two hour special on gun running if it was a real news source.

  • Hout Bosques

I actually agree with your characterization of Ross. I DON’T agree that ABC’s motive here is to help Obama, because the immediate impact of this is far more likely to help Rmoney not Obama.

The reason I agree with you on Ross & the timing is that this really isn’t new or breaking news of any kind. This article by John Richardson in Esquire last year appears to be contain everything that Ross & ABC have on this, & probably a whole lot more:http://www.esquire.com/features/newt-gingrich-0910

But there’s an alternative to your suggested motive of helping Obama, & the one of helping Rmoney, and even the one of just damaging Newt & letting the chips fall (tho apparently there are lots in Washington who have that last motivation, and just as apparently it’s a decidedly bipartisan thing) – and that’s the simple ratings game.

That is, it’s looks reasonable – check that: it doesn’t look UNreasonable – to project that South Carolina may represent for the Last Best Chance for the Not Mittens crowd in the GOP, & this story could well end up as media fish wrap in less than a week.

The reason I’m going with the ratings motive as the most likely is that once you dig into the DNA of the Mouse network, it’s quite politically conflicted at most (Meg Whitman was on the boards of both Disney & Bain at the same time.), but if it’s biased in any way, it’s biased towards GOP establishment. Consider, for example, that Bain & Company owns significant shares in the ABC parent company.

  • Hout Bosques

and all without ever having actually “known” a woman in the biblical sense, too; quite a trick.

  • Anonymous

Would you describe your post as a rational discussion?  Sorry I don’t see it.  Seems you are presupposing how others will respond based perhaps on your own guilt about the embarrassing behaviors and hypocritical actions of your party leaders.  Liberals don’t need to respond when the GOP is self imploding, we just set back with amazement.

  • Hout Bosques

Shocking stuff. we should never vote that guy into the White House, is what I say.

(On the other hand, if he does finesse his way into the White House & then does a really good job there, why should we really care about all this?)

Same sex marriage = using the other just for masturbation purposes = Newt Adultery… there’s absolutely no difference.

Natural Marriage = Male+Female = commitment to love one another UNCONDITIONALLY… to create the ideal environment to rear children… in sickness, health, rich/poor, good times/bad times… again, a Natural Father + Natural Mother… no chemicals or additives.

  • Sanders Youth

I believe that then White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said it best,
The president has never favored same-sex marriage. He is against it. The country is evolving on this, and he is evolving on it.

It will be interesting to see if Brian asks Marianne if she herself lives a double standard; afterall, she was a mistress too, and apparently believed open marriage was a-ok when she partook in one.

For some reason, I’m not expecting that Brian posed such a question….too logical for ABC.

  • Anonymous

It’s obvious you believe his claims, but don’t you think that if there was validity to his allegations, FNC and all the other right-wing media outlets would be all over the story?

It will be interesting to see that if Gingrich somehow does win the Republican nomination, and polls indicate a landslide win for Obama, whether or not this gets bandied about as real news by those who want to destroy the President.

“Documents related to the divorce filed Friday in Cobb County Superior Court include a separation agreement signed by the couple and notarized in December 1987. There is no indication it was ever filed.Gingrich’s divorce attorney, Thomas Browning, said Marianne Gingrich called her husband on his birthday in June 1987 to tell him she was leaving him. Gingrich, he said, came back to Georgia to find his home emptied out.Browning said the pair maintained separate residences for six years before reconciling in late 1993 or early 1994.”

As usual many of the lesser of thought will use this moment to find people from the “other party” that have had marital issues. AS usual, both sides will say things about the other side based on this particular man’s  marital stuff (we wont even BEGIN to talk about his public service related statements!). All I can see is that on both sides we have legions of IDIOTS who really feel after allll of this time that a person’s relationship with his/her spouse is indicative of how they will behave in public office. ITS STUPID.. it has been successfully proven to NOT be indicative of how a person governs. There have been just as many CRAPPY presidents and CEO’s etc., with PERFECT married lives.  EVEN WORSE, with all of the other insanity that NEWT has said in his career as a “public servant” it is sad that this would even MATTER in any way to shape your opinion of the guy. TRUTH IS I give him credit as a ballsy guy. I like a guy who will have the guts to ask the tuff questions and this is the grand father of tough questions that most dudes dont even consider due to their lack.

After the debate tonight, I decided to stay up and watch Marianne Gingrich on Nightline.  The interview had been promoted all day.  The Drudge Report had indicated that Brian Ross had interviewd her for two hours.  As the show began, I was shocked that they were only devoting one segment to the interview (they also did a segment on the Concordia and one on celebrity babies).  Out of the two hours that she was supposedly interviewed, Maianne Gingrich appeared on screen for less than three minutes.  They had a response from Newt’s daughters and clips from Newt blasting John King at the debate tonight, together with the standing ovation he received.  Marianne Gingrich said nothing that she had not already said in the Esquire interview.  She even had to defend herself from charges that she had tried to peddle influence when Newt was Speaker and they were still married.  The interview was a total rip-off and ABC should be condemned for selling us a false bill of goods!

If ABC wants to play “Politico” style political campaign targeted hit jobs, on conservative politicians, at the most coincidentally conveniently timed moment, then that’s their problem, as Newt and all conservatives, will make them know our extreme displeasure, as Newt has already done, and they will ultimately in the eyes of the conservative Tea Party Republican voters, as well as the public in general, will pay a heavy toll for it.. This kind of sleaze jour-no-lism is disgusting, and is nothing more than trash tabloid gossip regurgitated tripe, aka, old news..

Second point, being pefect in not having any vices, or extramartital affairs, etc, is not a litmus test for good leadership qualifications. Hitler never drank, smoked, or had been married (until the last minute of his evil life) and divorced, etc.. look who and how he was..  Then there’s Bill Clinton, FDR, Winston Churchill, JFK, etc,  all of whom had vices and trisks / extramarital affairs, outside their marriages..  So this holier than thou litmus test BS for Newt, is a bunch of BS double standard hogwash tripe, as always..

The same court filing in which Jackie Gingrich told the judge she did not want the divorce also accused Gingrich of failing to provide enough money for her and her two then-teenaged daughters to live on during their separation. Kathy was 17 at the time.

“Despite repeated notice to plaintiff and requests by defendant, plaintiff has failed and refused to voluntarily provide reasonable support sufficient to include payment of usual and normal living expenses, including drugs, water, sewage, garbage, gas, electric and telephone service for defendant and the minor children,” she said in court documents. “As a result, many of such accounts are two or three months past due with notices of intent to cut off service and gas and electricity.”

So much pain!  It may be old news, but it is still painful.  Newt has caused so much pain in his personal life.
