Larry King Would Like Ryan Seacrest To Replace Him

Well, that didn’t take long: in his hour-long chat with old pal Bill Maher, Larry King answered the first question that popped into most minds when he announced his upcoming departure: who he would like to see take the coveted 9 PM spot. The somewhat surprising answer? American Idol host Ryan Seacrest.

In mid-conversation, Maher asks King up-front, “who do you want to sit there after you go?” King thinks about it for a few seconds before answering “I can’t be objective because I don’t know his feelings, his interests in politics, but Ryan Seacrest… he’s curious, he’s interesting, he’s likable.”

King’s one issue with the hire is that it is completely unclear whether Ryan Seacrest has any interest in politics, which Maher notes is a “key part of the job,” and what makes the choice surprising. But should Seacrest turn out to have a hidden passion for our national sport, and be given ample time and support to mature into the role (and let audiences get used to seeing him in that role), looks like he’s the heir apparent in King’s eyes.

We need new blood, not retreads.

There ain’t nearly enough money or audience in it for Seacrest. He’s got his fingers in some of the most profitable programming in the entertainment business. I’m sure he’ll be flattered Larry likes him, but he ain’t jumpin’ on the last place cable network.

On the bright side, at least he didn’t suggest Ellen! ;)

Perhaps that’s because the show has turned to an entertainment program rather than a serious program.

Seacrest would definitely continue in the tradition of Larry King. Interpret that statement as you will.
