Lean Back: Megyn Kelly’s Numbers Check Out, Despite MSNBC’s Suspicions

Last week, MSNBC President Phil Griffin demanded an “investigation” into the “impossible” ratings jump for Megyn Kelly’s new show, which doubled its viewership in the demo between its first and second night.

“Monday we had a really good day in the key demographic, on the night that Fox News debuted their three shows, we either tied or beat them in those hours,” Griffin said last Friday. “Tuesday—you guys should be doing some investigations—I have never seen it in all my years of cable, same overnight, same everything, and they doubled their ratings in a day? It is impossible. I have never seen it. They did election night numbers in the demo Tuesday.”

Griffin got his wish. Nielsen confirmed today that the numbers are accurate, and Kelly’s show did in fact increase its viewership in the demo 100% overnight. Her numbers fell back to earth the following night, though she still led Rachel Maddow and Piers Morgan in the 9 p.m. demo.
