House Passes Bill Officially Renaming Gulf of Mexico the ‘Gulf of America’

The GOP-led House has passed a bill officially renaming the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America,” moving President Donald Trump’s executive order one step closer to being codified and unable to change.

All Democrats opposed the bill, along with a lone Republican, Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska.

“It’s easy to mock this legislation because it’s so inane and embarrassing — and we have,” Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, (D-PA) told the Associated Press. “But it’s very existence and the fact that House Republicans have chosen to waste time and taxpayer dollars to bring it up for a vote, is worth considering.”

The bill will still require Senate approval.
