New York City’s Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is headed to Uganda on a family trip, but not before sharing some social media posts from haters, many of whom have been urging him to do just that.
Mamdani took to X on Sunday to share some of the “mean tweets” he’s been receiving in the wake of his NYC primary win earlier this month.
“Being a politician means listening, not just to your supporters, but your critics too,” Mamdani said in the video. “Some of these critics, especially on a certain website, have been giving me consistent advice.”
He then introduced a couple of actual tweets aimed at him.
“Zohran go back to Uganda where you come from and belong,” read one.
Another said: “Loser. Go back to Africa.”
Mamdani revealed there were thousands more X posts in the same vein. And to put the demands to rest, he said that’s exactly what he’s doing.
“I hear you, and I agree. I’m going back to Uganda,” he said in the video. “I’m headed there in a personal capacity to celebrate Rama and I’s marriage with our family and friends. But I do want to apologize to the haters because I will be coming back.”
Mamdani ended the video by pitching several “humble” suggestions for headlines to The New York Post to report on his trip, including “UGANDA MISS ME” and “HE AFRI-CAN’T BE SERIOUS!”
Mamdani’s candidacy has garnered national attention over some of his past rhetoric on the Israel-Hamas conflict and socialism.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly called him a “communist” and threatened to arrest him if he ever defies ICE as mayor.
