Fox News Chief Political Analyst Brit Hume offered a blunt if not dire view of the presidential race just moments before the first debate.
In a rematch that much of the country did not want President Joe Biden, 81, and former President Donald Trump, 78, are the presumptive nominees of their parties and traveled to Atlanta for their first debate of the cycle on Thursday night.
Hosted by CNN, the event was slated for simulcast across a multitude of networks, including Fox News, which provided ample pre-debate coverage. Shortly before the start time, Hume weighed in.
“This is interesting because I don’t think I’ve ever seen a presidential campaign in which each candidate’s the other’s best hope.”
His observation cracked up his fellow panelists.
“The Biden team very much wants this to be about Trump, and that of course takes them backward to things about his record that people don’t like,” he continued. “Trump on the other hand very much wants the election to be about Biden and his record. And, of course, we have the overarching question that I think, you know, will be the first question people kind of want answers and that’s, how’s Biden doing?”
On Wednesday, Hume commented on the unusual weeklong debate preparations Biden participated in at Camp David.
