Over the past week or so, President Donald Trump has taken to publicly humiliating Attorney General Jeff Sessions in an apparent attempt to marginalize him and force the AG to resign. The president has publicly said that he is upset with Sessions with recusing himself from the Russia probe, stating that he would have never hired him if he knew Sessions would do that.

The reason Trump is going hard after Sessions in an effort to get him to step down seems to be his belief that a new attorney general could get him out from under the Russia investigation. This would include the firing of special counsel Robert Mueller. Speaking to reporters today, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) both stood up for Sessions and stated that the termination of Mueller could spell the end for Trump.

The Republican lawmaker noted that Trump’s public attacks on Sessions are “not going over well in the Senate” and the “conservative world.” He added that if the president feels Sessions should be fired, then he should use his power and do it “and accept the consequences.”

He then explained what those consequences would be.

“If Jeff Sessions is fired, there will be holy hell to play,” Graham declared. “Any effort to go after Mueller will be the beginning of the end for the Trump presidency unless Mueller did something wrong.”

He added, “Right now I have no reason to believe

that Mueller is compromised. If you’ve got reason to believe he shouldn’t be serving as special counsel, let me know.”

Graham has been vocal in recent days over his distaste for the way the president is treating Sessions.
