Matt Schlapp: Journalists Say Their Freedoms Are Being ‘Muzzled’ Yet Fail to Report on Keith Ellison

American Conservative Union Chairman Matt Schlapp slammed the media for their lack of coverage of the abuse allegations made against Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN).

Earlier this week, the son of Ellison’s ex-girlfiend Karen Monahan publicized the allegations that the deputy DNC chairman verbally abused his mother and that he dragged her off the bed by her feet. Ellison has vehemently denied the claims.

Schlapp appeared on Fox News late Friday night and weighed in on the controversy.

“Look, if the story she’s telling holds up, I think it’s incredibly troubling and I think Mr. Ellison should go away,” Schlapp told Fox News anchor Shannon Bream. “I think the good news here is that there’s going to be an election. I think the voters in the end, for all politicians, it’s the voters who get to decide whether or not someone’s a creep and someone who’s committed these terrible acts or whether or not they think they’re overblown. So I like the fact that it’s in the hands of the voters.

Schlapp then took aim at the media for their handling of this story.

“I’ll tell you one thing I don’t like is that the mainstream media refuses to cover this in the same way they cover Republican problems,” Schlapp said. “The thing that frustrates a lot of folks is this which is you have journalists who are running

around on other networks saying their First Amendment right to report is somehow being muzzled, but no one is muzzling them on this case… The voters have to make up their minds as to whether or not these charges are right and true or whether they’re not. And the only way they’re going to be able to do that is if the press follows Shannon’s lead and actually covers the story. This is what we need the press to do. The press doesn’t need to be the final judge and arbiters to whether or not Keith Ellison is guilty. But they need to explain the story so that people can make their own judgment. It’s really the press that continues to fail to do their job. It’s why 14% of Republicans, only 14% of Republicans think the mainstream media is fair in their reporting and I think it’s a big problem for our country.”

The Five co-host Juan Williams pushed back, pointing to CBS News’s interview with Monahan that aired on Thursday night and that it’s a “big story” in Minnesota.
