Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Fox & Friends co-host Lawrence Jones mixed it up Tuesday morning on an on-location studio at the United Arena where the Democratic National Convention is taking place.
Buttigieg is particularly beloved in Democratic circles for his seemingly effortless ability to push back on conservative talking points during hits on Fox News. Jones was prepared to cut the Biden cabinet member off when he felt his guest was over-reliant on talking points for a morning show audience accustomed to criticism of President Joe Biden, not the defense that the Transportation Secretary demonstrated.
The discussion started with Jones laying out a particularly critical point of view on the Biden administration and the events that led to the current serving president to bow out from his reelection bid amid pressure from several high-ranking Democratic officials.
“It was a big showing for the president yesterday,” Jones noted. “Put him at 11:00, though, last night, and a lot of people were saying, we loved you, Joe. We loved you, Joe. But he’s no longer the nominee. A lot of questions, though, about it, because The New York Times writes that, all the cabinet meetings that the president has been having, have been scripted. They said nine months since the latest cabinet meeting. Axios writes that he’s only available for work between the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and then the Wall Street Journal says,
“That’s funny,” Buttigieg fired back. “Sometimes I feel like conservative media and the Republican Party still think they’re running against Joe Biden.”
Jones interrupted to insist the sources he cited “wasn’t conservative media,” but Buttigieg pressed on.
‘He had an opportunity last night to demonstrate his achievements,’ he said of Biden’s DNC speech. “The fact that he is responsible, for example, for the biggest run of job growth in the history of the American presidency, I think in any job, but especially the presidency, you want to be judged by your results. People want to nitpick the show flow of a cabinet meeting when we have had a country that when he inherited it, it was in a condition where you couldn’t even approach the Capitol because of the violent assaults on the Capitol by Trump supporters. Not just getting our country moving on from that, not just getting our country back on its feet from the Covid collapse.”
The discussion turned to a number of topics with which Fox & Friends viewers are familiar, like crime rates (which Buttigieg insisted were higher under former President Donald Trump), inflation rates and Vice President Kamala Harris&
Things got tense, with a number of “let me finish” and “can I finish my questions” thrown in, but the interview resulted in the sort of content that will likely please both Democrats and Fox News viewers.
