President Donald Trump reassured members of the press corps on Friday, telling them that when it comes to the war in Ukraine, he’s on it.
This month, Trump met separately with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky amid Russia’s ongoing war of aggression. Last Friday, Trump hosted Putin in Alaska, where the two spoke privately about a possible end to the war before Trump publicly declared, “We didn’t get there.” Nonetheless, Trump said he remains optimistic. On Monday, he hosted Zelensky and other European leaders at the White House in what was a much more cordial affair than February’s meeting between the two leaders.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Friday, the president, who was wearing a hat that read “Trump Was Right About Everything,” said he will know what he wants to do in two weeks.
“I’m gonna make a decision as to what we do,” the president said. “And it’s gonna be it’s going to be a very important decision. And that’s whether or not it’s massive sanctions or massive tariffs or both. Or do we do nothing and say, It’s your fight’?”
CNN White House reporter Alayna Treene asked, “Are you saying that’s a real possibility, then, that you do nothing if Putin doesn’t come to the table
“I’ll see whose fault it is,” the president responded. “If there are reasons why, I’ll understand that. I know exactly what I’m doing. We’re gonna see whether or not they have a meeting. That’ll be interesting to see. And if they don’t, why didn’t they have a meeting? Because I told them to have a meeting. But I’ll know in two weeks what I’m gonna do.”
Trump has said he wants Putin and Zelensky to meet to try to forge a resolution.
