Penelope Soto, 18, became an internet star last week when the video of her court appearance went viral. Soto, in a South Florida jail awaiting processing on a drug possession charge, did not display the appropriate amount of respect for the judge presiding over her case. After handing Soto a $10,000 bail and being flipped off for it, the judge sentenced Soto to 30 days in county prison. Soto was given another chance to apologize this week, however, which she did to the judge’s satisfaction. He has since vacated her sentence and dropped Soto’s contempt citation.
Soto admitted in a second appearance before the court that she was under the influence of alcohol and Xanax when she made the comments that offended Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat enough to charge her with contempt.
Amid her tears, Soto apologized for her actions. Rodriguez-Chomat explained that he would drop the charges against her, which could have amounted to a felony conviction had he insisted they stand.
Soto will complete a court-ordered drug treatment program and, being a first time offender, will likely see her original possession charges dropped.
