Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said during a POLITICO Playbook event Thursday morning that Mexico was not actually going to pay for President Donald Trump‘s proposed border wall.
When asked about a wall, McConnell said that “there are some places along the border where that’s probably not the best way to secure the border.” When asked further if he believed Mexico would pay for it, McConnell responded bluntly: “Uh, no.”
McConnell’s statement stands in contrast to Trump’s campaign promises that he would build a wall and that Mexico would pay for it. Trump most recently repeated that claim in January, leading the Mexican president to cancel a planned meeting in Washington D.C.
