The Bachelorette‘s Garrett Yrigoyen Apologizes For ‘Liking’ Offensive Posts: ‘I Didn’t Mean to Hurt Anybody’

The winner of the latest season of ABC’s The Bachelorette has publicly addressed the controversy that was stirred at the beginning of the season over “liking.” offensive social media posts.

Garrett Yrigoyen, who at the time of the season’s debut was secretly engaged to the “Bachelorette” Becca Kufrin, sparked outrage on his personal Instagram account for liking posts mocking sanctuary cities, refugees, and transgender people including Caitlyn Jenner. He issued an apology at the time.

Well, now that he’s been revealed as the winner, Yrigoyen addressed the controversy in the post-Bachelorette special on Monday night.

“Some stuff came out about my social media, and I didn’t realize the effect behind a double tap or a like on Instagram, so I put out an apology,” Yrigoyen said. “I didn’t mean to offend anybody. I apologize for that still. I’m very sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt anybody’s feelings or do anything like that. I stand by everything that I posted in my apology, and i’m just trying to grow as a person, be a better person on a daily basis.”

Kufrin defended her now fiancé, saying it was a “major thing” that they had to talk about early on, but she got to “know him for who he is.”

“I just want to move on and to move forward and grow and continue to educate ourselves,” Kufrin said. “And that’s all you can ask for in another person is somebody who recognizes if they make a mistake and if they do something wrong and want to grow from it.”
