On Wednesday, pro-Russian civilians and militia members stormed a Ukrainian naval base in Crimea. Raw footage of the event, via the Associated Press, features Russians storming the Ukrainian government facility and unidentified authorities taking Ukrainian officials captive.
These captives are just the latest Ukrainian military personnel believed by the government in Kiev to be in Russian captivity. The Ukrainian government gave Moscow until 3 p.m. ET to release those hostages. They further announced on Wednesday that Ukrainian troops would evacuate the peninsula in order to reduce the chance that there will be further conflict between Russian and Ukrainian forces.
Ukrainian military forces have been put on “full combat alert” as the deadline came and went.
On Tuesday, Ukrainian and Russian forces traded fire following the storming of a Ukrainian military base after Russia formally annexed the peninsula. Two injuries were reported and one Ukrainian solider was killed in the exchange of gunfire.
