Former Nixon counsel John Dean spoke with CNN’s Anderson Cooper tonight, saying President Trump‘s slams against Robert Mueller reflect his goal of obstructing justice to a worse degree than Watergate.
Dean was on the panel alongside Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein, who said that Trump is waging a “scorched-earth battle” against the Mueller investigation for the survival of his presidency. When Dean was given his chance to speak, he said that Trump is engaged in “a very public obstruction of justice” that exceeds Nixon’s wrongdoings in office.
“Trump from the very beginning, he’s involved in this,” Dean said. “And so I see a very different profile, and the big difference being Nixon was behind closed doors — everyone was surprised when there were recordings of it. Trump is right out front on it, and he’s dealing with it publicly.”
Cooper doubled back by asking Dean if he truly thinks Trump has done more to obstruct justice than Nixon. The former counsel’s answer: “That’s exactly what I’m saying. I think Trump is Nixon on steroids and stilts.”
