Fareed Zakaria Leaving Newsweek for Time

After ten years with the magazine, Newsweek International editor Fareed Zakaria will be leaving at the end of September to join Time as Editor at Large. Time Managing Editor Rick Stengel announced today that he is “thrilled that Fareed is joining us; his singular voice in explaining the world to people is a natural fit with our editorial mission at a moment when Time is more relevant and wide-reaching than it’s ever been.”
Zakaria will continue his Sunday morning show on CNN, “Fareed Zakaria GPS.” Moreover, parent company Time Warner, which owns both CNN and Time, plans to expand Zakaria’s role across its family of networks. From the Time press release:
TIME and CNN will collaborate on making Mr. Zakaria’s online presence on CNN.com and TIME.com a powerful joint platform for his views and ideas with distinctive written content and video, including interviews with newsmakers.
Zakaria’s move to TIME doesn’t come as a huge shock, given Newsweek’s recent plight and the fact through his CNN show he has a strong connection to Time‘s parent company TimeWarner. Meanwhile, this marks the latest loss to Newsweek, which has been on a bit of a downward spiral since changing ownership and losing prominent staff members like Jon Meacham, Evan Thomas, and Michael Isikoff.
