James Murdoch: News Of The World Will Publish Its Final Edition This Sunday

James Murdoch announced Thursday morning that News of the World — the Rupert Murdoch-owned British publication under scrutiny over allegations that it hacked into the voice mailbox of missing teen Milly Dowler and those belonging to family members of slain British soldiers — would be publishing its final edition this Sunday.

Murdoch, Rupert’s son, made the announcement via Sky News, which is also owned by Rupert Murdoch.

Here is the full statement from News International, via Brand Republic News:

News International today announces that this Sunday, 10 July 2011, will be the last issue of the News of the World.

Making the announcement to staff, James Murdoch, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, News Corporation, and Chairman, News International said:

“I have important things to say about the News of the World and the steps we are taking to address the very serious problems that have occurred.

It is only right that you as colleagues at News International are first to hear what I have to say and that you hear it directly from me. So thank you very much for coming here and listening.

You do not need to be told that The News of the World is 168 years old. That it is read by more people than any other English language newspaper. That it has enjoyed support from Britain’s largest advertisers. And that it has a proud history of fighting crime, exposing wrong-doing and regularly setting the news agenda for the nation.

When I tell people why I am proud to be part of News Corporation, I say that our commitment to journalism and a free press is one of the things that sets us apart. Your work is a credit to this.

The good things the News of the World does, however, have been sullied by behaviour that was wrong. Indeed, if recent allegations are true, it was inhuman and has no place in our Company.

The News of the World is in the business of holding others to account. But it failed when it came to itself.

In 2006, the police focused their investigations on two men. Both went to jail. But the News of the World and News International failed to get to the bottom of repeated wrongdoing that occurred without conscience or legitimate purpose.

Wrongdoers turned a good newsroom bad and this was not fully understood or adequately pursued.

As a result, the News of the World and News International wrongly maintained that these issues were confined to one reporter. We now have voluntarily given evidence to the police that I believe will prove that this was untrue and those who acted wrongly will have to face the consequences.

This was not the only fault.

The paper made statements to Parliament without being in the full possession of the facts. This was wrong.

The Company paid out-of-court settlements approved by me. I now know that I did not have a complete picture when I did so. This was wrong and is a matter of serious regret.

Currently, there are two major and ongoing police investigations. We are cooperating fully and actively with both. You know that it was News International who voluntarily brought evidence that led to opening Operation Weeting and Operation Elveden. This full cooperation will continue until the Police’s work is done.

We have also admitted liability in civil cases. Already, we have settled a number of prominent cases and set up a Compensation Scheme, with cases to be adjudicated by former High Court judge Sir Charles Gray. Apologising and making amends is the right thing to do.

Inside the Company, we set up a Management and Standards Committee that is working on these issues and that has hired Olswang to examine past failings and recommend systems and practices that over time should become standards for the industry. We have committed to publishing Olswang’s terms of reference and eventual recommendations in a way that is open and transparent.

We have welcomed broad public inquiries into press standards and police practices and will cooperate with them fully.

So, just as I acknowledge we have made mistakes, I hope you and everyone inside and outside the Company will acknowledge that we are doing our utmost to fix them, atone for them, and make sure they never happen again.

Having consulted senior colleagues, I have decided that we must take further decisive action with respect to the paper.

This Sunday will be the last issue of the News of the World.

Colin Myler will edit the final edition of the paper.

In addition, I have decided that all of the News of the World’s revenue this weekend will go to good causes.

While we may never be able to make up for distress that has been caused, the right thing to do is for every penny of the circulation revenue we receive this weekend to go to organisations – many of whom are long-term friends and partners – that improve life in Britain and are devoted to treating others with dignity.

We will run no commercial advertisements this weekend. Any advertising space in this last edition will be donated to causes and charities that wish to expose their good works to our millions of readers.

These are strong measures. They are made humbly and out of respect. I am convinced they are the right thing to do.

Many of you, if not the vast majority of you, are either new to the Company or have had no connection to the News of the World during the years when egregious behaviour occurred.

I can understand how unfair these decisions may feel. Particularly, for colleagues who will leave the Company. Of course, we will communicate next steps in detail and begin appropriate consultations.

You may see these changes as a price loyal staff at the News of the World are paying for the transgressions of others. So please hear me when I say that your good work is a credit to journalism. I do not want the legitimacy of what you do to be compromised by acts of others.

I want all journalism at News International to be beyond reproach. I insist that this organisation lives up to the standard of behaviour we expect of others. And, finally, I want you all to know that it is critical that the integrity of every journalist who has played fairly is restored.

Mediate, why is this story buried?

The paper’s name has certainly been sullied, but the cynic in me wonders if closing shop is a precursor to bankruptcy, so they can force victims into their compensation scheme.

  • Azarkhan

Who cares? It’s an English paper and has nothing to do with the US.

Nah, the Parent Company should be sued. They share the profit, so they should share the loss. Finally! Murdoch is paying for some of his sleazy journalism enterprise.

Anyone know how Fox News is covering this story? I bet it’s being treated with a soft glove over there.

Murdoch’s sleaze that permeates through all his media organizations is finally catching up to him. May Fox News be the next one to go.

Well, look at all the excited Liberals, commenting and scurrying about like mice at a government cheese outlet.

You got who? By your standards, if a gov’t employee commits a crime, then Obama is responsible. And if you committed a crime, your boss (assuming you even have a job) would be responsible. Nice try! Murdoch did what was right here. You libs aren’t going to take down FOX, so matter how much you try. The POTUS even tried and that was an EPIC fail. Just accept the fact that they aren’t going anywhere and you’ll be happier.

I think it’s funny how much conservatives bitch about how “corrupt” and “deceiving” Obama is but then take whatever FoxNews and other Rupert Murdoch owned media outlets produce for verbatim and question very little to none of it. I’ve heard some navel-gazing comments in here before, but yours takes the cake. You MUST be trolling, right?

On the off chance that you aren’t, two things: (1) you’re reading about this on the Internet, which means that people all over the world read it, which in turn means that STUFF THAT HAPPENS IN OTHER PLACES AFFECTS THE PEOPLE OF THE USA, YOU MORON.

Sorry about the shouting, but you had no lapels for me to grab.

    (2) Murdoch owns NOTW. Murdoch owns FOX. NOTW has been accused of journalistic impropriety and has now paid the piper. Some will ask, “Will FOX have its own such scandal someday?” I’m not saying that they will–British tabloid culture is its own beast entirely–but some people will ask.

Better question: what will Murdoch replace NOTW with? I see a brilliant marketing maneuver on the way: a “new Coke” situation played out in the world of newspapers.

I think it may be difficult to prove liability of either News Corporation or News International based on what I’ve seen, so though someone may try and of course I’m not familiar with British law, but I suspect a judge would limit them to just suing News Group Newspapers and based upon reports, it’s how the previous cases have been filed.

Again, I don’t know British law, but under the US system a bankruptcy “stays” any civil judgments.

You lefties crack me up. “ooh…ooh…we got him!” What, exactly, did you get? And who is “we”? Murdoch is killing the tabloid (and expanding one of his other newspaper properties to 7-days). This absurd and typically immature attempt to try and tie other News Corp properties into this is laughable. But hey, that’s what you do; that’s who you are. You can’t beat Murdoch by ratings or by sales, which should be enough to tell you where you stand in terms of being in the mainstream. Key words “should be”, of course. We are talking about lefties, however.

Keeping it current, this is like saying that Barack Obama sold guns to Mexican drug cartels.

Except in that case, I find it REALLY hard to believe the at least Eric Holder didn’t know about it. Carney was asked at a presser I think today when Obama became aware and didn’t answer. He’ll get back to us!

James Murdoch has taken a drastic but probably necessary step, and has taken personal responsibility for the actions of a handful of minions. He showed a lot of class and his statement was perhaps the best apology I’ve read from a corporate official.

Let me contrast what James Murdoch has said and done with the responses by New York Times editors and publishers, when their paper published secret documents and information which did grievous harm to national security. Let me remind you: the Times did not apologize and no one resigned or was fired. The closest they came to an apology was, in one case, the admission by an ombudsman that, to paraphrase, in retrospect it was probably a mistake.

It was a mistake by the Justice Department not to prosecute these traitorous a-holes to the full extent of the law. In my opinion the government should not be able to shut down newspapers; but when crimes have been committed by the people running newspapers or writing for newspapers, there is no justification why they should not be charged.

you got murdoch’s d*ick so deep in your throat he can’t do no wrong according to you…it’s his fu**ing magazine. the best selling 1 apparently. are you telling me he doesn’t know what’s going on with it? hiring private detectives to spy on people isn’t something the EDITOR does without the boss knowing about it.

I’m wondering why homophobic hate speech from a moronic leftwing a-hole is allowed on this website. Do the editors know about it? Does the publisher know about it? I guess the boss must know about everything, so he should be taken to task, right?

I thought an effort was going to be made to clean up this site. If everyone else is going to take off the gloves, then I’ll gladly wade in with bare knuckles too.

I have to give Murdoch big credit for this.

I can’t say whether Murdoch did it simply because it was right or if there’s a bottom line calculation but in either case it *was* right. The message is a very ethically strong response to the recent phone hacking revelations.

This sets absolutely the right example for all journalists and reporters.

    It’s probably just a rumor..
but I heard after they re-open the paper they will just be changing the name up a bit
New Name “The News World Order” ..
New motto “First to press! If it takes criminal actions to uncover criminal deeds, by god we will do it!”
    again, it’s just a rumor…

Do you know the difference between hacking/wiretapping versus lying? It seems not. Why don’t you point out the lies and distortions here: NOTW Closure: James Murdoch’s Full Statement

Why are you posting another link to Murdoch’s statement when his statement is right at the top of the page, in the article you’re commenting on.

Do you ever actually read the articles before you comment?

It’s likely that a lot of people will be reabsorbed back into the Empire somewhere else.

But the murder victim’s phone hacking thing was so bad, so godawful that if Murdoch didn’t take some kind of immediate action when this hit the public, he’d get sucked right down into it before long.

So in my opinion this was both the smart thing, and the right thing for Murdoch to do.

Probably the only way to gauge whether Murdoch acted more out of integrity or more in self interest, is to see what happens to the primary offenders next.

If they all end up back in the Empire with different hats, that’s not good, but I don’t think Murdoch could afford to wait around for any definitive ‘internal investigation’ before taking some kind of action.

The Telegraph, a competitor to the News International papers (Sun, NOTW, Times), gives a timeline of events, which started in 2006 with two arrests and the resignation of an editor. Between 2007 and January 2011, Scotland Yard and the Press Complaints Commission continued to report no new evidence against any other persons at the NOTW.

Then, “January 26 – Scotland Yard launches a fresh inquiry – Operation Weeting – into the phone-hacking controversy after receiving ”significant new information” from the News of the World’s publisher, News International.”

So according to The Telegraph, James Murdoch blew the whistle on wrongdoing at his own paper!
