Edge Of Darkness: Mel Gibson Calls Interviewer “Asshole”

video

Mercurial actor Mel Gibson has been promoting his new film Edge of Darkness with numerous interviews about the film and his career, and it appears that he’s none too eager to discuss his past bouts with booze. During an interview on WGN-TV, interviewer Dean Richards referenced the alcohol while asking Gibson how the public has treated him differently in the last few years. This did not appear to please the leading man.

Gibson is a true role model for Christian manhood.

I’m not a fan of Jesus or any of Mel’s recent films (and in all probability I’ll ignore “Edge of Darkness” entirely), but I can’t say that I’d react much differently. The guy strung some bigoted sentences together. Is it worth talking about for the next-half decade? Having said that, any rational dude should probably realize that this isn’t really a great way to market your films after a personal slump.

He should take a page from the Michael Vick playbook–a lot more people are willing to forgive when you’re constantly reminding everyone of how sorry you are. I guess Mad Max just can’t bring himself to that place.

I’m fairly sure that God considers us all to be assholes and yet loves us anyway.

  • timzank

    Amen Cecelia! (seriously!)

I realize that I’m going against the current internet mindset, but I thought Mr. Gibson had an honest, human reaction to what has to have become a repeated set of questions.

As a disclosure, I’ve never paid to see a Mel Gibson film and this is another that I’ll eventually just see on cable, but after a day or two of sitting in that chair doing satellite interviews, I’m sure that though he may have thought that his mic had been cut, he’s bound to have realized that he doesn’t need the hassle or the money.

  • The Real Royal King

I doubt God would use such course language to describe us, but I’m High Church, so I’m not sure what the Holy Rollers and Snake Handlers might say.

Magister, I agree this may be a human reaction, but is it a reaction befitting such a self-proclaimed devout Christian? I am mindful of Rose Sayer’s admonition to Charlie Allnut, “Nature, Mr. Allnut, is what we are put in this world to rise above.” Well, we all fall short, don’t we, and the Lord and Cecelia know I am the most wretched of sinners.

  • Cecelia

Yeah, I agree, Magister, Mel’s an asshole, no doubt, but he pretty well called it like it is with this interviewer.

I loved the part where Mel said “I’ve done all the necessary mea culpas”!

Gibson is looking a lot worse for wear (to say the least) but he’s also a hell of lot more interesting than he used to be too.

  • Cecelia

No, TRFRK, if anyone understands context and understands too the comparability of fallen nature with transient corruptible biology, it’s God.

  • Phocus

Well, Mel is human, unlike most of the posters on this topic…assholes.

I don’t do religion, but it appears from his production company’s IMBD listing that they have two films queued-up, one which was supposed to have starred him and one would think that the reaction to this promotional tour has taken some of the air from beneath its wings.

While his film library still lists 210 titles, several of which are producing some kind of income and it appears to have significant value, so combined with his windfall from Christ, he’s never going to hurt for money.

This tour has probably caused him to realize that if he’s going to stay in his art, he may have to spend a decade behind the camera or in a boardroom and understandably, it may have made him a little bitter.

i am not sure how i feel… on the one hand, the interviewer did keep going at him. and he is only ONE is a loooooooooong line of interviewers that Mel has had to sit thru, i’m sure all of them asking about the incident. On the other hand, he did engrage some people. On the other hand, millions of people say something at least once that is offensive to someone, somewhere – is it fair that he is singled out? His comments went worldwide because of who he is. And on the other hand, I think he needs help. I think he seems to have some sort of problem, whether it is alcoholism, or some kind of drug addiction, but he is looking strung out or coked up or hung over or something. He just doesn’t seem right.

(i don’t really have four hands)

  • sarainitaly

he seems very angry, and it is reflected in his work, and his actions…

  • Cecelia

    Sara, I think he’s a drunk.

  • sarainitaly

sadly, i think you are right. he seems to be spiraling out of control, big time.

The problem for Mel is that this is far from the first time that this has happened. This is a guy who has made a fortune off of the public’s goodwill and appreciation of his work and so what disturbs me is that he, like some other actors, wants to say you can only ask him questions to help him promote his film and nothing more. Im sorry but I salute these local reporters who (as long as its respectfully) ask questions about life after his meltdown.

  • The Real Royal King

Indeed, it would be journalistically irresponsible not to ask.

  • Jelperman

So Robert Downey Jr. is such a doper that he crashes into other people’s homes, Mickey Rourke beats his girlfriend Carrie Otis like a piñata, Roman Polanski drugs and rapes a child and Rebecca Gayheart gets drunk and kills a pedestrian, but Mel Gibson gets hounded over what he said while he was drunk? What kind of chickenshit is that?

  • sarainitaly

True… that’s why I think he is still in meltdown mode – like he is a raging alcoholic or something, and was perhaps even drunk during this interview. Otherwise, i think he would be a little more apologetic and patient, less volatile and angry. He’s still carrying whatever it is that set him off 4 years ago… Definitely a PR nightmare for the studio.

Jelperman makes a good point about Polanski…

  • Cecelia

Well, there’s a case to be made that Dean kept on and on after Gibson had stated that time had taught him a lesson and he had learned it.

  • sarainitaly

yea…that’s true too! hehe see, i just don’t know how i feel about it. i think it’s one of those things where people just have to decide at the box office. mel will find out, thru the box office receipts if people are over it, or not, and whether his anger is getting him anywhere.

  • Cecelia

And too look what the angry a-hole personality has done for Keith Olbermann.

It’s put him in the Trump Tower with a bunch of other nouveau self-obsessed a-holes.

Never underestimate the ability of angry a-holes to land on their feet, even after a meltdown.
