Newsweek Publishes The Crazy Michele Bachmann Photos That Didn’t Make The Cover

Apparently in response to the uproar over their “crazy” cover photo of GOP presidential hopeful Rep. Michele Bachmann, Newsweek magazine has cleverly published a slideshow of cover outtakes that seems to make the case that Bachmann is incapable of being photographed without sporting the gaze of a Cujo stunt double. Their “See, she always looks crazy” defense is probably appealing to most Bachmann detractors, but I call “bullshit.”

The slideshow consists of eight photos that the magazine labels “outtakes,” and they feature shots that convey varying degrees of what publisher Tina Brown calls “intensity.” There’s one in which Bachmann appears to use nothing but the power of her grin to extract an elderly man’s will to live, and another one that looks like she’s trying to levitate an object from across the room.  Here’s a collage of thumbnails that we put together, but you can check out the full slideshow here.

The accompanying text outlines the controversy surrounding the cover, including the denunciation by NOW, and explains, “Many of the photographs taken for the feature showed Bachmann with similar intensity. Here are more images from the shoot, including some used inside the magazine, showing Bachmann in the nation’s capital and on the trail in Iowa.”

While they don’t actually say it, the implication is that these eight photos represent all of the shots they had to choose from, and they had no choice but to use the one they went with.

The problem is that news photographers (really, all photographers) use rapid-fire cameras that take several shots per second, which results in a large selection of each pose. For that one shot they did use, there are probably ten or so that are nearly identical, but with subtle differences which might have softened the effect of Bachmann’s gaze. None of those made it into the outtakes.

In three years of covering the White House, I have accumulated hundreds of rapid-fire shots of President Obama, for example, and there are lots of them that freeze odd-looking moments (a cough, a blink) that look jarring out of context. I’m sure all news photographers do. That’s why they take so many shots, so that they (or their editors) can select the one that best conveys the truth of the moment.

Whatever the intent of the Newsweek cover, it was a specific choice, not some process of elimination. The same is true of the outtakes, all of which have been selected from dozens of nearly-identical, but subtly different, shots.

If you take two hours worth of video of a person and use only five minutes of it, you can make them look like an blooming idiot or genius, it all depends on your objective. Like MSNBC, Newsweek’s objective is to get Obama reelected.

Well one thing for sure there will be no CRAZY Michelle Obama photos coming out.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

One might then ask why they are spending so much time on Mad Michelle. “She don’t seem like no threat me.”

  • BatboysDad

Good god Tommy, have you looked at some of the pictures of you posted on this site?

This is why professional photographers take dozens of pictures to get that good one.

I must say though, that when the orders come down from on high, you sure like to follow them.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Has she announced she’s running for elective office?

  • http://twitter.com/SailRabbits Magister

Tommy: I’m not saying you’re wrong, but a quick glance at the photographer’s website and his blog shows that he’s not a standard-issue “news photographer” — most of his portfolio shots appear staged, sometimes elaborately — so he may use a different method than some of your friends.

Also, one suspects that the photographer may have given the magazine selected images for their cover consideration and even if he had taken rapid-fire shots, alternative versions of the same pose may not have been among their choices.

IOW: It’s quite a leap to say, “he had to have done X and they did Y because it’s what I know”.

I can’t tell if I feel bad that she is married to a gay guy, or I should just be afraid of her. There’s something about those eyes… she’s killed before. XD

The overweening contempt for ordinary American voters dripping from the Team Obama media mouthpieces at Newsweek is patently obvious in their grotesque smear of Congresswoman Bachmann: “The elderly, the unemployed, the exasperated, and even a few disillusioned Democrats crowd her rallies and cheer her not-going-to-take-it-anymore shtick, even as they recognize some of its inherent contradictions.” Into Newsweek’s Demented Left echo chamber, no light from the real American political world of fly-over country penetrates. This is the Newsweek that stated in 1980 that “Fringe candidate Ronald Reagan has no chance of getting a elected.” This is the Newsweek that has lost 56% of its circulation over the last 10 years.
“Bachmann planned to vote against the debt-ceiling compromise that would ensure the arrival of her Social Security check and the military benefits owed to her sons and nephews.”
This last statement is an outright fabrication by Newsweek. The Wall St. Journal proved that Social Security payments of $50 billion/month could have been paid 100% out of the SS Trust fund with no net cash drawdown from the Treasury. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111903554904576458294273264416.html?KEYWORDS=social+security+trust+fund

So, if a publication uses a photo of Michelle Obama looking pissed off for their cover with a caption saying “Big Mama Pissed Off again”, that would be fine with Tina Brown and the leftists, since one can easily produce thousands of similar photos of Mooch looking pissed off with crazy mad eyes.

To the contrary, it’s the tea party’s contempt for “ordinary” American voters that should have you outraged. The TP gang were prepared to fight to the death to protect Paris Hilton’s and Warren Buffett’s tax breaks, while telling Grandpa, who fought in WWII, to eat less and skip his meds. They’re loathing for the poor and middle class is frightening.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

You are correct in calling bullshit, TC.

Most of their 8 pics they posted were not even pics from the actual cover shoot, and # 6 looks like a test lighting shot – she is standing around, dabbing her eyes. Total BS that those are the only options they had….

And the action/crowd shots are most likely for the inside story, not the cover. They would have had hundreds or  at least dozens of shots to choose from. And we have seen lovely pictures of her, so it is ridic that they try to claim it is her fault, not theirs, that they chose that bad pic for the cover.

And we know they could have tweaked it in PS if they wanted to. They photoshopped her flag lapel pin out of the shot, they could have fixed her eyes, if that were truly the only available shot (which it wasn’t).

The praying picture is better than the cover they chose. And so is the one with the old dude – yet that one didn’t quite fit with their headline that she is the Queen of Rage, did it?

  • Anonymous

They followed her around for a week and took 8 photos?  Where are the other 9,000 “outtakes” where she doesn’t look she just flew out of the Ark of the Covenant?

  • Lou_sarah

    …their, not they’re…

Anyone with a TV has heard her ravings. From her calls for a McCarthyite commission to investigate congress, to her wildly untruthful claims that Obama spent $200 million a day on his trip to India, this woman is a walking, talking insanity machine.

This is not news.  It’s a hit piece.  No respectable journalist would dare run a photo essay like this on Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, Sonia Sotomayor, etc.  You don’t think there are plenty of crazy-looking photos of Nancy Pelosi?  But Mediaite wouldn’t run an article on them — and shouldn’t.   Even National Enquirer wouldn’t stoop so low.

  • Moderate

National Organization of Women have now come out and said this is over the top and sexist. They usually will not defend a Republican.

  • http://twitter.com/runforfun54 Ilene K

Really? We’re REALLY having this conversation? Too bad Mediaite and other news outlets see Michele Bachmann whining about a cover worthy of covering, but a Republican calling our President “Tar Baby,” Pat Buchanan calling our President “boy,” and Dead Beat Dad Joe Walsh owing nearly $120,000 in back child support, is hardly worth a mention. Media coverage is half the problem … when you continue to cover batshit crazy candidates like Bachmann whose grasp of the facts is so lacking that a Newsweek reporter called her the worst politician he’s EVER covered who gets the facts wrong so often, but think a total lack of respect for our President can just slide by.  And then, of course, you also totally ignore coverage of the S&P report that called out the Republican role in this debt crisis choosing only to focus on “The Administration” or only “the President’s” role.   to say I’m disillusioned is a mild understatement.

Newsweek think their readers are actual idiots.  Michelle is on TV, we all can see she is a beautiful woman.  Everyone takes bad pictures, the picture just reminds me of a DMV photo.   Newsweek’s better excuse is to say they have no money, so they hire really bad photographers.   Much more believable excuse.

Not a Bachmann fan (at all) and even I think the cover was a cowardly move by Newsweek. However, I’m a bit shocked that nobody is talking about the story itself, which was a serious hit job. Again, not here to defend a woman whom I also think is a bit unhinged, but when is see covers like this, and read the story itself, I can sorta see what she means by LSM.

Putting Michele Bachmann on the cover of Newsweek is a clear indication of why nobody reads magazines anymore as circulation for such publications is pretty flat with no growth.  Would any normal person want that magazine with her picture sitting on a coffee table?  Hell no!  In addition she has as much chance of being President as Donald Trump.  In other words not worth the cost to buy Newsweek this week.

If Tina Brown was happy with her own looks, she’d realize that attacking pretty women is unacceptable.  The problem is this isn’t high school anymore, and Newsweek used to be a reputable magazine…

On a side note, good for NOW for calling it out.  Nice to see …

She’s strange, almost robotic, does not photograph well. But her monotone voice, and continuing to repeat her bio, “I was a tax lawyer, the foster kids, her christian beliefs” is the creepiest part. Her unchristian hatred of homosexuals should be a dealerbreaker for the GOP, but of course, it likely won’t be.

  • Anonymous

I didn’t say that bloggers don’t do these kind of hit pieces.  I said respectable journalists don’t serve up this garbage.  Of course, I am operating on the assumption that Mediaite wants to be considered a respectable journalistic outlet….

  • Gham

So what if the number was from an Indian newspaper? Shouldn’t an elected representative be expected to do more strenuous research than looking at some newspaper? Moreover, shouldn’t they also be expected to have the common sense to have realised $200 million a DAY for a handshaking holiday is completely ridiculous? And I think you’ll find there is already apparatus in place to investigate corruption in Congress. So what Bachman thinks is needed in addition to that is beyond my understanding.

I disagree. It makes no sense, but they had a softball photo about Sotomayor to imply she might be gay, and talk of Hillary’s pantsuits as though it matters.   Sexism in the media is more strongly against conservatives, but it’s also common against powerful women of all sides. It’s everyone’s job to stop this crap now…

Shall I give you a list of Democrats who referenced media articles that later turned out to not be factual?

We can start with the whole CBC Tea Party racial slur, which never actually happened.

  • Anonymous

No, it’s business as usual for the Democrats. Claiming S&P blamed the Tea Party for the downgrade and then threatening to investigate their practices is pretty much the same thing, and has far broader consequences than what Bachmann did.

  • Anonymous

Perhaps where you come from, but in a majority of America, the exact opposite is true.

Funny how libs project the “fact challenged” meme on issues where facts contradict their deeply held beliefs (climate change).

Maybe the S&L scandle out of Arizona, abandonment of his wife after her accident.  If Republicans nominated someone decent maybe, but Obama is heads above everyone I have seen running on the Republican side so far.

seriously?  She doesn’t have a white house staff, she’s a congresswoman.  They sourced it wrong, who cares.  CNN and NYT do this all the time, you expect more due diligence in a talking point.  The Pres. makes errors in political talking points all the time, usually to mislead.  That’s politics, I don’t call him crazy.

Face it, they hired a crappy Photographer and do not want to admit it.  They obviously also have bad judgement in editing when they want to.  I would hate to have a credit line for any of those photos if I shot them, it would make me look like a terrible photographer. Never hire a photographer you can not trust or even let them photograph you in the first place.
As for the compilation of images. . . . let’s see a collection of Michelle Obama and her fatty fat fat butt and looking like a screaming gor and Obama looking like the incompetent fool that he has turned out to be.  That would be more fun to look at then this weak argument from a Lefty Hater trying to cover for the Liberal HATE Mongers at Newsweek.

  • Anonymous

Yes, you can. Pres. Obama did absolutely nothing as either senator or state senator and is a disaster as president.  Do I prefer more of the same with Bachmann?  No. I’m hoping for a former governor to win.  How democrats chose Obama over Hillary remains a mystery to me.   A good speech maker is rarely a good leader…

  • Anonymous

Perfectly acceptable to disagree strongly with Bachmann for her positions. But liberals can’t seem to understand the concept of respectful disagreement. No, she’s gotta be crazy, hateful or some other personal attack. Yeah, I know some on the right do the same thing, but it’s a far smaller percentage and far less tolerated by the majority (see birtherism).

Newsweek has made a choice to pander to a far left piece of the American public because it cannot survive anymore as a straight news magazine. MSNBC did the same thing, deciding it was wiser to pander to a small group of people in hopes of finishing second to FOX regularly than to do straight news and finish fourth.

All the idiocy you hear coming from Matthews, O’Donnell and (well mostly) Maddow is stuff they know is BS, but they need to pander to their audience. I think Matthews looks in the mirror after every show and says to himself “I can’t believe I said that out loud and on the air”.

Spay… I’m reply to yours but this is really for “lastbrain”… however there’s no reply button showing under his nested post.

LastBrain, first off… that fact is on the Internet, but that doesn’t mean it originates there. This was just reported in the Boston Globe: http://goo.gl/F5j0z

I know, I know… “if it ain’t on Fox, it must be liberal media B.S.”  But then you can ask where they got it from, which would be the following sources:

The Department of the Treasury, The Financial Management SErvice, the Bureau of the Public Debt, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the Office of Management and Budget, the Commerce Department, and — lest you should counter with a slam that it’s obviously liberal appointees spinning the numbers too — the Bipartisan Policy Center.

    However, Spay made a mistake.

He said that Bush added 20% to the National Debt. That’s being awfully kind. Bush actually added $6.1 trillion to what is now a $14.3 trillion debt. I don’t know how good you are with math or calculators, so I’ll help you with that one — that’s more than 42% of the total. Not to mention, more than Reagan, Bush Sr., and Clinton’s spending combined. And just over 2.5 times more than Obama.

Did Obama do some of his own damage? Yep… he’s piled on $2.4 trillion so far. Reagan, who rarely gets as much credit as a big spender as he should (though, fairly, also doesn’t get credit for aggressively saving Social Security the way he did) added $1.9 trillion to the debt. Bush Sr. added $1.5 trillion. And Clinton piled on $1.4 trillion. Though, the latter also famously got our deficit — the amount of spending each year — down to zero.

This is partly why your crowd was crowing that “deficits don’t matter” when they had a Republican in the White House (http://goo.gl/wGLdE)… though, of course, they’ve since changed that tune. Suddenly, a high deficit for them is the crime of the century (the crime of blowing trillions on two unjustified wars and generous tax payoffs for the rich during being inconsequential).

Of course, it’s clear to anybody with a brain that deficits DO matter. Had we “stayed the course” (to borrow another Bush phrase) that Clinton set out, we could have had this entire National Debt paid off by 2009. That’s math too, my friend.

    Look it up.

While you’re at it, confirm this for yourself (no need to confirm it for anybody else, because we can all go to the sources mentioned above and get this publicly available and verified information):

When you look at the % increase to the ratio of debt-to-GDP (a key measure of the financial health of any country, accepted by most economists regardless of party background), Obama again is hardly the biggest offender. Let’s take a look together, shall we?

% Amount Added to debt-to-GDP ratio:
(The lower the number added, the better)

    Reagan, + 20%
    Bush Sr., +13%
    Clinton, -10%
    Bush Jr, +28%
    Obama, +9%

Notice anything? Yes, yet again, Bush Jr. takes the prize as top spender. Add to this the fact that the debt ceiling was raised not just once during Bush’s term but five times under Bush. And Republicans voted to raise it SEVEN times during Bush’s two terms.

You can call this liberal spin or whatever you want.

But these are the numbers. And if the reason you hate Obama is because you think he spends too much or the debt is too high, then it’s dishonest for you to claim that as the cause without putting Bush at the front of your line as the premier offender. Plain and simple. He may very well be long gone from office, but all those costs and the impact they’ve wrought are still very much and very obviously with us.

Likewise, go ahead and rebuff… but not without “disproving” that Reagan nearly tripled the National Debt… that Dubya really did double it… that there’s not a lick of proof that Bush’s radically expensive tax cuts paid for themselves or created jobs… and that, even now with Federal taxes at their lowest in 60 years, tax cuts aren’t spurring the economy. And will highly likely both create another 10 years of soaring debt AND force several more increases in the debt ceiling.

In fact, the further tax cuts that Ryan and crowd wanted would add another $4 trillion to the debt… all of which, no doubt, they would also blame on Obama! You people are outrageous.

    As for this statement:

“Fact is, the deficit will have increased more in Obama’s first three years than the entire Bush era combined, more than the combined debt of every president from Washington to Reagan. Look THAT up.”

What the hell does that even mean? You do understand that the debt and the deficit are different things, right? Deficits are the year to year borrowing, the Debt is the accumulation of those years of borrowing. And as we’ve already seen, Bush Jr. alone spend more in his term than double all the spending that preceded him. For Obama to spend more than Bush did, he would have to multiply his current total spending by 250%. Are Obama’s deficits — that is, his annual borrowing — higher than Bush’s? Yes they are. But pushing aside the “deficits don’t matter” Cheney quote, how could today’s deficit not be large, given that the nation is trying desperately to buy its way out of the 2008 market crash property collapse, Iraq and Afghanistan, and several years of very weak job creation (all of which occurred under, yes, Bush… along with the first giant bailout and the start of the Great Recession, which in pure technical terms, ended early into, yes, Obama’s term. If you want to match numbers, try matching Obama and Bush on job creation… we’re still deep in the soft employment hole, but Obama has created more jobs in his two years and change (not three yet) than Bush did in all eight. This too is a fact. As you would say, “look THAT up.”

  • Guss

I suppose that’s one better than your ilk… who seems to have a hard time finding facts, period.

Newsweek could have pulled a still photo from the New Hampshire debates. Regardless, Bachmann will be done as soon as Perry enters the race. While the straw poll is held in Iowa on Saturday, all the attention is going to be on South Carolina where Perry will be. This is a nighmare scenerio for Bachmann. Regardless, she had no chance of winning the nomination. If she did, Obama, as he did against McCain, would have floated thousands of negative adds against Bachmann and there are plenty of them to show that she’s a liar, gaff prone and has little sense of history. That would be the only way that Obama would stand a chance of being
    re-elected.

Kevin99 said to outlaw the TEA Party.  If Kevin99 was a true American he’d say to outlaw the seditious anti-Constitutional politicians in the Senate, Congress (especially the Communist inspired “Progressives), and he President himself.  We have a  5th Column in government that is intent on overthrowing the Constitution one little bit at a time.  One party, the Democrats would rather have a society based on what Vladimir Lenin put into practice.  The other party, the Republicans, mostly sits on their hands and allows the sedition to progress?  As with most Socialistic governments, our left-wing politicians feel that they can improve on what Vladimir Lenin started.  THAT is a daydream which is an impossibility to achieve.  The typical Socialistic / Communistic society is one where everybody is equal…equally miserable except for the politicians and “special” political groups.  Somehow, the voters who continue to keep the “Professional” politicians in office never seem to “get it.”  In a sense, the American voters will have the government that they deserve.  Considering the stupidity of about 50% of the voters in this country who put Obama into office, it’s possible that the Constitution will become a thing of the past.  Buy your guns and ammo while you can.   We may need it!

But seriously, would a man be as offended?  Would he worry about the lighting and the wrong angle?  Just a thought.

The Fact of the Matter is, no matter how the worthless, going broke liberal magazine, Newsweek, portrays Ms Backmann, the fact is, she or any other Conservative would do a much better job than Obama, anyone!  Hell, my pet pig, Mohammud, would do a better job!  And he could bring his buddy, Allah, along.  Barry is the Worst President in American History!  Even Jimah Carter was a better President, and at least Jimah believed in the True God of the Christians and Jews.  Obama certainly doesn’t.  He goes to church when he thinks it will help him politcally.  Anyone But the Fool, B. Hussein Obama, in 2012!

I think the phrase I’m looking for here is “tempest in a teapot.” Or “Tina Brown is a know opportunist.”

Or, “who gives a rat’s patoot?”

(I can’t believe no one has used “tempest in a teapot” yet, but it didn’t come up in a text search.)

@ Jeffrey Don Davis Obviously, one must be a flaming bigot to be a part of the GOP. You have shown your qualifications!

    You are nuts.

Like Bachmann’s claim that “the founding fathers worked tirelessly to end slavery” when in fact they determined that blacks only counted for 3/5′s a person and that they created the documents that kept anyone from voting except for men who were property holders. They did nothing to abolish slavery and if Bachmann had gone to regular schools instead of religious institutions who don’t really try to teach real history- only religion- she might have a better grasp of the real history of the US. As it is, she will not be allowed to rewrite our history any more than her dumb butt friend Palin. Both of them have made such stupid statements and have no clue. They are an embarrassment to all women.

NOM stands up for women of all political persuasions when they are portrayed or treated in a sexist or belittling way. In this particular case, I didn’t think it was warranted. Bachmann looks crazed all the time.

Tommy, Mediaite and this article were all highlighted on Fox and Friends this morning.

    @ progressive kitty@Byrnie:disqus
Reading comprehension can be your friend.   If you review what I wrote, I said nothing about Obama’s two autobiographies (who write two books about themselves btw?) and was talking specifically about Michelle’s BS 350k per year job she picked up RIGHT AFTER HER HUSBAND WAS ELECTED SENATOR.  Then the job mysteriously was no longer a requirement when she left for Washington.

Does this sound even mildly shady to you.  If it doesn’t, my only question to you is what flavor are you drinking…orange or fruit punch?

Oh joy…here we go yet again with another tired round of unsubstantiated accusations of racism.

Allow me to translate.  Progressive Kity “Your Racist!” = I have no intelligent retort to what you just said

    Hey Kitty,

To help you better understand what “Crazy” is…why do you read Michelle’s thesis out of Princeton?
    Here’s the link:

By the way, I just paiid $21.87 for an i P a d 2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $657 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, BidsFirst.com

Absolutely; she is a nut. But this article is correct; they would have had Tens or hundreds of photos to choose from. They did a shitty thing here, no doubt. As jon Stewart said, her words are enough to show her lunacy; there’s no need to do this to her appearance. She’s already said so many things that automatically disqualify her from ever being a general election candidate.

  • History is Hard

There’s nothing in the Constitution that says “blacks” count as 3/5ths of a person:  “Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons.”  If you’re going to bash the Constitution, then at least learn what it actually says.

Regardless, the worst part of you statement is the obvious cluelessness about the 3/5ths compromise.  Try to get this through your skull:  the 3/5 compromise was not a statement about race or a denigration of black people.  It was an attempt to politically limit the power of the slave holding states by not counting the slaves as equal to freed people.  Without it, the slave holding states would have had *greater* political power and those same states could have increased their political power by importing or creating new slaves.  Is your complaint that the slave-holding states should had greater political power and an incentive to hold more slaves?

Ironically, you make these statements in an effort to refute someone else’s education.

Bob, “Why should I pay money for garbage that they spew out to an unsuspecting American public.”

Leaving aside the missing question mark, why should you pay money for garbage when Fox offers it as part of the standard cable package?

    Mitch,
Your comments have absolutely no substance.  You’ve been smoking too much weed!!

  • teddykins1

Well said!! They are both “a hot mess”, and have absolutely no business in politics.  I never know what the F@#k Palin is talking about.  She makes no sense, and has no real solutions.  Let’s get to the heart of why folks don’t like Obama—you should all check yourselves, and your racist ways!!
