Newt Gingrich Uses Pearl Harbor Anniversary to Plug His Books – Update: Book Plug Deleted

If you thought a Rudy Giuliani fundraiser with a suggested donation of $9.11 was tacky (Giuliani wasn’t directly involved, and later returned the donations), former House Speaker and possible 2012 candidate for President Newt Gingrich may have just upped the ante.

On a day when Americans remember the lives that were sacrificed during the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, Gingrich reminded us all what this momentous occasion is really all about when he chirpily tweeted, “The 69th anniversary of the japanese attack is a good time to remind folks of our novels pearl harbor and days of infamy newt.”

Oh yes, he did.

Update: Gingrich apparently thought better of his tweet. It has been deleted without explanation.

Obviously, if you’ve written two novels about the attack on Pearl Harbor, no one should begrudge you the chance to promote them when interest in the subject is at its peak, but a smidgen of reverence and/or humility is the least you can do. Sure, it could’ve been worse. Newt could’ve offered a $.69-off e-coupon to mark the anniversary, or given an autographed copy to the first 2,402 people to buy the books (and if you decide to do either of those things, Newt, I want a piece).

Perhaps the biggest shame is that, having made such a fool of himself with this book plug, Newt neglected to include a link to purchase the books.

Tommy, it’s frigging Twitter, ferchrissakes. Settle down.

    This is shameful.

Fact: Newt Gingrich is an historian that writes about history events. Why not, because as I remember Pearl Harbor is a history event so unlike the liberals on this site with some kind of conspiracy theory shit he knows his!

Doesn’t make it any less tacky and opportunistic. No less unfeeling and irreverent.

Shameful is a nice way of putting it.

    These were much better imo

    # Elections matterTodays tax agreement would never have happened if democrats had won in november about 4 hours ago via ÜberTwitter

    # New tax agreement is first good news for economy and may signal beginning of a republican recovery because voters insisted on change about 4 hours ago via ÜberTwitter

    # The agreement to extend the tax code without an increase for two years is a great victory for american people and gop leadership about 4 hours ago via ÜberTwitter

I’m sorry, but personally, I see nothing wrong with it. After all, I assume he’ll make a couple of appearances as an expert over the course of the day and his book will get plugged, so what’s wrong with doing it on your own?

Case in point and Tommy, I mean no disrespect, but after your heart attack, you tweeted and Mediaite embedded mentions of the story and though one story was more tragic and affected more people, I see the two being somewhat similar in the marketing game.

  • CosmosDan

I waiting for his upcoming book. American History Revised.

Fact: I feel like starting to advertise my nerf liberal you’re so fucking nuts bat. This is a bat you can club your screen with when you read the liberal lunatics post on this site without damaging your PC or laptop. Details later on how to get your own liberal flogging nerf bat. Aka “the shellacker”.

He could have at least put in a link to the American Heart Association. ;-)

Yes, but my whole reason for tweeting the heart attack was pitch-black satire. If that’s what Newt was going for, he’s a comic genius.

Such a disgusting, repugnant, little human being.

Can’t this asshole just go play golf and STFU!

  • Magister

@Tommy: Again, I meant no offense and I hope you won’t hold it against me, but it seems you missed my point.

I assume that you tweeted the heart attack because it popped into your mind, it was something to do and you figured it was a novelty act. I don’t blame you for that and I felt it was interesting. Instead, I was trying to make reference to the days after your emergency situation, when you tweeted and this site embedded clips from Leno’s monologue and the report from Jeanne Moos because they represented nothing but site and personality promotion.

If the Japanese Air Force were currently bombing Pearl Harbor and if Gingrich tweeted a “toldja” while the attack was underway, I’d agree that it would be in poor taste, but 69 years later, it’s a historical reference and I see nothing wrong with selling books, hotel rooms, group tours or television specials. Though it was tragic, it’s more of a marketing tie-in, like romantic movie marathons for Valentine’s Day.

ETA: I mean… do you fault the Gettysburg Chamber of Commerce, the National Park Service, Eastern National or all of the theme businesses for trying to capitalize (and memorialize) the events which took place on that battlefield, so many years ago?

He revises “history” every time he opens his mouth.

Fact: You must’ve tried out a REAL bat on your own skull – which would explain saying something so idiotically clueless.

magister is usually pretty astute, but satire sometimes doesn’t “translate” well. To some people, satire is just a concept. People like Glenn Blech-h-h wield it like a chainsaw rather than a somewhat delicate instrument.

Every time I think Newt has sunk to a new low, he “bottoms” himself. Maybe he should set up a bookstore on the USS Arizona monument.

What else would you expect from a guy named after a salamander?

Screw Newt. Let’s remember those who died on what FDR properly called “a date which will live in infamy.”

  • cjd ohio 1

yeah like FDR was a great man

I assume that it’s because the National Park Service’s cooperating associations tend to shy away from fictionalizations or because they often limit titles available on the web, as to why I see neither book listed on the Pacific Historic Park’s website. So, without calling them or actually going to Hawaii, we can’t know for certain whether Gingrich’s books are available in the USS Arizona Memorial bookstore.

Back in the good o’ldays when racial profiling was a very liberal and good thing?

it helped us win that war didnt it?

BTW: I’m just going to add that this post was picked-up by Wonkette, which Jim Newell referenced in his post to Gawker and though I’m not checking on on all the roots, but probably one of the three prompted the other 32 posts that come up on a Goggle Blogsearch and quite possibly like the big boys, a lot of them used Tommy’s image.

Add all of those who read those blogs to those who follow Gingrich on Twitter, literally tens of thousands of people learned that Newt has a couple of Pearl Harbor books and out of the ones who pulled-up his catalog on Amazon, Books or any of the other retail sites, I’m going to guess that he may have directly moved at least 40 units.

I don’t know Gingrich’s per-unit cut, but even at it’s smallest and using my conservative estimate, the direct sales resulting from the tweet seems like a pretty good payday for thirty seconds work and that doesn’t even take into account any copies added to a wishlist or other titles sold from his catalog because someone did an author search.
