Report: Sen. Harry Reid Abandons Effort To Pass Spending Bill; Extend Current Funding

At a time when Senator Harry Reid is desperate for a legislative victory, it appears that he’s chalked up another loss. On a day of bi-partisan blaming over earmarks included in a $1.1 Trillion dollar spending bill with nary any time for legislators to review, it appears that the Democratic Senate leader is withdrawing effort to pass the massive spending bill, instead choosing to extend the current funding.

Reuters reports:

In a surprise victory for Republicans, Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid said on Thursday he would abandon efforts to pass a $1.1 trillion spending bill and instead extend current funding.

The move will likely give Republicans a greater chance to push for the deep spending cuts they have promised, as they will control the House of Representatives and wield greater clout in the Senate starting in January.

“This bill is loaded up with pork projects and should not get a vote. Congress should listen to the American people and stop this reckless spending.” John Thune (R. S.D.)

    They finally listened.

The story here is that Democrats dropped an out-of-control spending bill because of Republican opposition. But you find that relevant information buried in the story.

Did the Rethugs also threaten to tell what parts of it were their own?

Did the Rethugs also threaten to tell what parts of it were their own? Didn’t need to. The lamestream media already were touting the Republican pork. It’s amazing how much higher the bar is for Republicans than Democrats. The president said no more pork, so why didn’t he just tell Congress he was going to veto the bill if it passed? Could have saved a lot of time.

I believe every bill should be read aloud in both Houses, posted online, or even mailed or emailed to every citizen. if they are too long, then therein lies most of the problems. Scale it down and make it so that even I can understand it.
Pass it so we can see what’s in it…give me flippin’ break.

You devalue all of your argument with that “lamestream media” crap.

    Uh-oh! My post disappeared. LOL.

This ridiculous bill is now dead in the water. And, yes, Obama could have looked like a real statesman if he had threatened to veto it. Instead the Republicans get the credit for killing this trillion dollar pork-filled embarrassment.

You Tea Party simpletons new to the game sure are cute.

Dirty Harry and the Progressive-Demorats, now have to live with the fact that conservative-Democrats got the November message. If they want to keep their seats they had better stop going along with the Obimbo agenda and start thinking for themselves. Thinking for themselves might be so foreign to them that it just might shut down Washington….hopefully!

  • Bronco46

Hopefully this will be the beginning of the end for spendathon that started when Pelosi took over as speaker back in 2006.

They should have been called–and I believe they were–on the pork they added. Until or unless people demand that all spending bills be brought before congress and voted up or down on their own merit, nothing will change.

  • Socialist

Ya republicans better start really cutting, that’s your job.. You guys got in power for last 10 years, and you guys cut nothing..

Start cutting the deficit, starting with wars, and then ….
