Rush Limbaugh has defended Donald Trump over and over and over amid controversy this year, but all it took was for Trump to say some not-nice things about Ted Cruz for Limbaugh to start questioning Trump’s sincerity.
As far as Limbaugh’s concerned, Cruz has an unparalleled conservative streak that none of the other Republican candidates have, and he found it “extremely interesting” that Trump is “echoing the Republican establishment” in his criticisms.
On Fox News Sunday yesterday, Trump called Cruz a “maniac” who everyone dislikes in Congress because he’s “screaming” all the time, and touted that he would be more able to work in a bipartisan manner than Cruz.
That attack concerned Limbaugh a bit:
“That’s so unlike Trump. I mean, that’s a huge mistake. But on paper, it’s a huge mistake. Trump gets away with his mistakes. Such is the bond of loyalty that his support base has for him… Any of you who are holding out hope that Trump is a genuine conservative…a genuine conservative would not go after Cruz this way.”
And he admitted it kind of “raised a red flag” for him.
