Too Late: Paula Deen Posts Second Apology Video, Food Network Ends Her Contract Anyway

After posting a short and somewhat awkward apology to YouTube Friday afternoon, Paula Deen quickly removed her initial video and replaced it with a second version in which she appeared more composed. However, just moments after the video went live, the Food Network released a statement saying they “will not renew Paula Deen’s contract when it expires at the end of this month.”

Deen added some context to her second apology, both acknowledging her absence this morning from a scheduled Today appearance but also objecting to her portrayal in the media.

“I was invited this morning to speak to Matt Lauer about a subject that has been very hurtful to a lot of people,” Deen began, looking more relaxed than in the initial video. “And Matt, I have to say, I was physically not able this morning.”

“The pain has been tremendous that I have caused to myself and to others,” Deen continued. “I’m taking this opportunity, now that I’ve pulled myself together and am able to speak, to offer an apology to those that I have hurt.”

“I want people to understand that my family and I are not the kind of people that the press is wanting to say we are. I’ve spent the best of twenty-four years to help myself and others. Your color of your skin, your religion, your sexual preference does not matter to it. It’s what’s in the heart. My family and I try to live by that.”

“I am here to say, I am so sorry,” Deen concluded. “I was wrong. Yes, I’ve worked hard and I’ve made mistakes, but that is no excuse. I offer my sincere apology to those that I have hurt. And I hope that you forgive me. Because this comes from the deepest part of my heart. I will continue to work and continue to do good things for good people.”

UPDATE 5:10 p.m.: Paula Deen has issued a third video, this one apparently addressed directly to Matt Lauer. “The last forty-eight hours have been very hard,” Deen said. “And, you know, I’m a strong woman, but today I wasn’t. This morning I was not.”
