Aflockalypse Now: 8,000 Dead Birds Found In Italy

Now this story does not appear to be going away. After a weeks worth of reports of mass deaths of birds, crabs and fish, yet another example of this seemingly strange phenomenon has come across the wires today with a report of roughly 8,000 dead turtle doves found dead in Italy, with a strange blue substance on their beaks. Fox News’ Megyn Kelly introduced the segment asking her cohort Trace Gallagher for the who, what and why behind this story. Alas, there are more questions than answers at this point.

Wouldn’t there be a red stain on their beaks then?

Trace: The exact explanation is that it happens on a regular basis. It’s been reported that mass animal deaths occur almost every other day on the North american continent alone and each of the events have had different causes, so only explanation is that it’s normal.

And what sets this apart is that a large contingent in the media and others have set Google alerts, which explains why a video report about 150 dead birds in Kentucky crossed my Twitter the other day and why a few days prior, a woman called that same station because she estimates that she’s picked up “dozens” of dead birds over the previous week.

The blue stains sound like poison of some sort. MIght be some crazy copycat Italian trying to “help” who read the news stories and went out and poisoned some birds….. The hypoxia theory from the Italian report neglects to mention that beaks, which are made of bone, wouldn’t stain blue. Blue color in hypoxia is a blood coloration effect due to low oxygen and would only be visible on tissue containing blood. No dove would fly high enough (35,000 feet+) to die that way, the bird would just fold it’s wings and dive back down to where it could breathe. Will wait for the autopsy report but would bet money on a poison of some sort from human or natural sources that the birds ate and stained their beaks.

That sucks if they were poisoned.
