Awkward! During Victory Parade, Player Drops Soccer Trophy, Watches As It’s Run Over By Bus
The thrill of victory, and the agony of watching your Copa del Rey trophy dropped into the street and run over by a bus. You know that’s got to hurt. That’s what happened to Spain’s Real Madrid, which won the Cup after 18 years and took to the streets to show off their precious silverware. As the team bus rolled through a street packed with cheering fans last night, one of the team’s players lost his grip on the thirty pound trophy, which fell directly in front of the bus and was crushed underneath.
Watching the video this morning on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, noted soccer fan Joe Scarborough groaned and said, “oh, that’s ugly.” And it really is. Also, mildly amusing. Willie Geist said police recovered the ruined trophy from under the bus, tried to bang it back into shape, but “the damage was too great.”
What kind of asterisk does this get you in the record books? 2011: Copa del Rey: Real Madrid* (Copa crushed by team bus later that night)
