BriWi For President! Sketch Group Organizes Rally In Support Of A Brian Williams Campaign (UPDATE)
Just when we thought the amorphous candidate pool for the 2012 election was finally starting to take shape, a dark horse has entered the race. No, it’s still not Chris Christie. It’s none other than NBC Nightly News host Brian Williams. Of course, this is probably all news to Williams himself, but a group of self-proclaimed “passionate” BriWi fans have started a campaign to have him seriously consider running for Commander in Chief.
You laugh but a bunch of you were seriously considering voting for a reality show star. (UPDATE with Williams’ response below)
The campaign is being kicked off by The Full Ginsburg, a political sketch comedy group from New York. Sure, their tongues may be planted in cheek, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t put the work in. They’ve made a full website, BrianWilliamsforPresident.com, designed a snappy flier, and even made campaign ads (including a nice parody of one of the most famous political ads of all time, Lyndon Johnson’s “Daisy” ad). Besides, since we all know Williams is nothing but a comedian trapped inside the body of a trustworthy-looking newsman and longing to get out, this seems as appropriate a source as any.
More impressive than all the campaign ads in the world though, is the fact that the group plans on holding an actual rally in support of Williams’ (currently non-existant) campaign. From their site:
“Brian Williams,
If you’re reading this, awesome! Step one in your candidacy is complete: becoming aware that we want you to be a candidate. Step two is coming to your campaign kick-off, of course. On Saturday July 16th, we’re gathering BriWi supporters from around the globe (or New York City) to a rally to kick off what we hope will be your campaign. The rally will feature elaborate orchestrated numbers, propaganda videos about your rise in the political landscape, spoken tales of your general greatness and also a story about that time you killed a wild boar. You didn’t kill a boar? You sure? Alright. Well, we already made some campaign ads saying you did, so just be cool if someone asks.”
So…why Brian Williams? Well, the group explains in their press release (yes, there was a press release):
“Chief of Community Organizing Zara Findlay-Shirras is responsible for organizing the grassroots elements of the campaign, including recruiting additional fans of Brian Williams. ‘People love his reporting, they love him on 30 Rock, and his music web series ‘BriTunes’ is one of the most innovative projects out there,’ she says. ‘Between that and his general charm and lovability, momentum is on our side.’
Statistically, Brian Williams is positioned as the best evening news anchor to run for President. With Nightly News consistently beating all competition since 2007, Brian Williams is the clear choice for America’s highest office. “If Diane Sawyer or Scott Pelley decided to run, it wouldn’t even be close. Williams, by a landslide,” adds Pollster Guru Brendan Collins. ‘People just love that guy, there’s no way around it.’
‘Come on. Name one person who doesn’t like Brian Williams. Think of a single person. You can’t do it,’ adds Speechwriter Mike Winton. ‘He’s like the Michael Jordan of news. Or Meredith Vieira of nighttime.’”
They’re right, everyone does seem to like Williams. So, does this mean we can hope for Tom Hanks for VP?
UPDATE: Uh oh. Looks like the group is going to have to work a little harder. Mediaite contacted Williams and he gave us this statement:
“The last thing this race needs is another candidate who is meticulous about his hair. While I’m flattered and mulling over how to mis-use the funds already raised, my only role in this election cycle will be as debate moderator and journalist.”
He’s just being modest! Keep the campaigning going!
