First Trapped Chilean Miner Successfully Reaches Surface

video

The cascade of media attention on the attempted rescue of 33 trapped Chilean miners came to a head tonight in riveting fashion, as the first of the miners, Florencio Avalos, reached the Earth’s surface, and a cheering crowd, after 69 days trapped over 2,000 feet below.

It was a long, incredible ordeal for the miners, but thus far the rescue is working almost exactly as planned, with a special capsule slowly lowered down to the miners and then gradually brought back up to the surface. It’s a long way from completion – it has to be repeated 32 more times, after all – but certainly, this is a heartening start – and an amazing story of perseverance for the 33 trapped individuals.

Video of the capsule being raised to the surface – and Avalos being reunited with his family – below. Once put in place, this was a phenomenally-executed rescue plan, and just a phenomenal moment in general.

It’s been great watching the rescue tonight. Amazing footage. Congrats to all the workers/rescue crew and here’s hoping the miners will be left alone by the media until they’re ready.

This was excellent live television and seeing Avalo’s young son crying with joy as his father emerged was so awesome. The Good Lord was watching over these miners and this is the kind of thing I like seeing in the news.

Who cares about politics at a time like this?

I think there is a bit of a political/business lesson to be learned from this; why can’t we do this? Why can’t we keep our mine workers alive for so long during collapses and bring them out alive? Aren’t we supposed to be the greatest country on earth? I’m not trying to politicize it, just saying that we should take notes.

The coverage has been fantastic. That first rescue was breathtaking to watch!

As usual, Anderson is doing a good job covering this breaking news. Great on location reporting by Gary Tuchman and Karl Penhaul.

Great job by the Chilean govt. and the brave rescuers. It was fascinating to be able to watch live as the capsule was being lowered into the mine. My best to all the miners and their families. I would love to hear what they have to say, but I hope the media will respect their privacy.

Congrats to everyone. Thank God the miner was safe.

I was pleasantly surprised that Fox News Adam Housley could speak Spanish and conversed with family members of the miners.

I also liked the fact that the President of Chile was there on hand.

I’ve been watching it most of the night, I’m glad things are going as well and smooth as they planned it. Hope that the last one (and all the rest in between) gets out as safe as the first two did.

This is remarkable to watch. I’ve heard at least three people say that it reminds them of Apollo 11. These are legendary and stunning images.

I hope they all get out OK. Godspeed to them all. However, you have to imagine what the guy whose mistress and wife are waiting for him is going to experience when he gets topside.

Out of the fire, into the frying pan?

You have to be a Republican/Conservative with a comment like that.

Can’t we all rejoice in the moment and wsh them well without snarky remarks?

Shame on you and your heartless soul.

Nope Mr T, I’m not a Republican, I’m a guy who believes they will get out OK, because I like to maintain a positive disposition, and as also responded to a bit of information I saw on the news. As for the condition of my soul, I seriously think that broom up your a$$ would prevent you from adequately passing judgement on it. Bless you :)

    Pot, meet kettle.

    What the hell was that?

I went to bed before the first rescue. So great to see it now! I just couldn’t believe when this happened and they said two or three months! It was so awful. I can’t imagine being a loved one, waiting for their rescue, and I can’t even IMAGINE being trapped alive down there. So, so awful.

It is so wonderful to see them emerging from that tomb. I just can’t even imagine….

(I am listening to FOX now, live, and they’re talking about the possible long term effects. Awful.)
It looks like this is going to be a very long process. It must be hard waiting for your turn to get out!
But definitely a fantastic outcome to such a tragedy.

A heart-warming story …. A great testimony to the strength of the human will and the work of God in the world ….

I have been amazed and a bit envious to see the coming together of the Chilean people. No doubt easier in a country not as vast in population or riches as the US, but still an inspiration to we Norte Americanos and to all the world.

  • AngelPeters

This is a day for rejoicing for any human being across the world. There will be challenges for these men and those that love them in the days ahead because of the psychological trauma that they have endured and hopefully that “rescue” will be as successful for them.

  • writer

The good news: Those guys were rescued. The bad news: The King is still posting.

  • stoogedudes

Ok, I told myself I would not say anything more about the thumbs down mechanism on this site, but the fact that people are giving thumbs down to those of us who are commenting on how wonderful the rescue of these miners is just proves how pathetically stupid the thumbs up/thumbs down system is on this site and how mind-numbingly partisan and idiotic those are who think they are really smart with their thumbing down on such comments.

Can we all agree on the uselessness of the thumbs?

  • writer

I agree, stooge. The right will vote with the right. The left will vote with the left. It’s only in cases such as that of the Royal King, who is consistently hateful no matter what, that the thumbs number goes inordinately high.
