David Gergen: Debate Sounded Like ‘Four White Guys’ Telling Women How They’re ‘Going To Control Your Lives’

Video

Much to no one’s surprise, the contraception issue got a fair bit of discussion during last night’s CNN debate. The birth control mandate in President Obama‘s health care program has been creating controversy and angering Republicans for a while now — and Wednesday night, they tackled the topic on stage. Afterward, David Gergen, CNN’s senior political analyst, had his own take on things.

In the post-debate analysis, Gergen started by saying:

There’s been a gender gap now for some years, as you well know, and that’s because many women have moved into a position of thinking…that this is about their reproductive rights. And I thought when this argument first started about the Church that the Republicans were in a very strong position, because it did look like the Obama administration was forcing the Catholic Church into taking positions that were really contrarian to their beliefs.

He then noted the shift in discussion:

Once Obama found his compromise, it’s morphed out of that. It’s part of a more general conversation about contraception, and even tonight about culture when Rick Santorum got into what’s happening to families. And for a lot of women it sounds like four white guys who are out there telling them, “Here’s how we’re going to control your lives.”

And so it continues…

    Let’s get this staight.
It is the Republicans that want to control women lives and women’s body.

  • Anonymous

oh man these guys hate women so much….no way they are going to win.

  • Anonymous

4 white rich guys that went out of their way to alienate women, Hispanics, auto workers, and teachers.

  • Anonymous

Of course it did. For nearly four decades, the anti-choicers set the agenda. During this time, woman right’s were slowly eroded. Then came the 2010 elections, with the draconian assault on woman’s reproductive freedom. Susan B. Komen set the stage because their reason for termination was simply an out and out lie. It did not take long for most women to realize what was next. The Republican party then compounded their problem with the all male hit parade. November is nine months away ladies. I hope you remember.

The left wants government to control our lives.
The right wants religion to control our lives.
That’s a lose-lose proposition right there, but as an agnostic, I’ll take government.

Can you tell what Ron Paul said about controlling women?  None.

Additionally, he was the only one that put women on an equal footing with men with regard to military combat.

  • Anonymous

If Sarah Palin or Michelle Bachman had been up there they’d come up with some other excuse to criticize.

“Four White Guys Telling Women How They’re Going To Control Your Lives” is an amazing viral video. Makes “2 Girls 1 Cup” look like Goatse

  • Anonymous

The difference is that while the left openly admits that there are times when government can be used to effect solutions, the right talks out of both sides of its mouth on this issue. They decry any government control of peoples’ lives — until it comes to their cherished social issues, like abortion, school prayer, same sex marriage, gays serving in the military. Then they’re only too happy to legislate restrictions on peoples’ rights.

I’m afraid we conservatives are going to lose the women vote if we keep this up.

That’s surely a vote winner for Republicans taking the strong and commanding lead in women’s’ rights!

    …or maybe not!

Control a woman’s body?  I think that they pretty much said that Catholic institutions should be able to act in accordance with their religious beliefs..  I think it is hilarious that Nancy Pelosi is holding her own hearing today in which the primary witness will be a Georgetown Law student who will make the claim that Georgetown’s refusal to pay for her contraception threatens her health, and that she has a right to attend Georgetown as it offers her a superior education, and she should not have to make a choice…

Considering that contraception costs about $700 a year, and a year at Georgetown Law is estimated to cost $63,750, it would seem to me that she should just incorporate another $700 into the annual costs of her education and figure the cost to attend Georgetown $64,450…  chalk it up as being part of the costs she pays for attending that superior university.

When did woman’s rights get to the point of demanding that someone else pay for contraception…  that is what I want to know.  When was this established as a right… I need food to eat and survive, I think that the government should mandate that someone pay for it… I think that I am being discriminated against.  I think that it is my natural right to be able to eat so what the HELL IS THE GOVERNMENT GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

You do not need to look at official jobless figures to determine that the economy is rebounding and hope is in the air again. You don’t need to look at the falling unemployment rate. Son’t need to watch the Dow hit 13,000, or home sales rebound to levels not seen in years. No, all you need to do to understand the recovery is to observe a Republican presidential debate, four men all running to depose Barack Obama, and half of the time is spent arguing about the “dangers” of birth control. Game over…  http://www.sunstateactivist.org

I asked this on two threads now and No answer :

Just what are the ideas the Republican/Tea Party have put forth besides
hating homosexuals and women? What wonderful plans do they have to help

This is very very weird. Santorum said he opposes contraception personally. How does he manage not to have 100 babies? Why would he oppose contraception?

  • Anonymous

Government provides tax credits and funding for all sorts of things that it deems in the public interest — and which are good investments. Preventing unwanted births is a pretty tiny price to pay when compared to the potential of having to pay for years of care in various forms of welfare/assistance/medicaid/etc.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emma-Thomas/100003357377085 Emma Thomas

Obviously. It is odd people argue otherwise.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emma-Thomas/100003357377085 Emma Thomas

The right doesn’t want our lives controlled by the teaching of Jesus, that would be socialism. They want us controlled by big corporations, oil companies, weapons manufacturers and assorted gamblers in the financial markets. They worship money, which contradicts Christ’s teaching.

  • Anonymous

Mr Stutterin stay on the topic and don’t dissemble…

‘More than half of American voters, 54 percent, said they approve of Obama’s plan to allow faith-affiliated employers to refrain from offering free birth control to employees while mandating that it be covered by insurers. Thirty-eight percent said they disapprove of the plan, a Quinnipiac survey found.Approval for the tweak to the administration’s rule was higher among women, 56 percent of whom gave a thumbs up, compared with 52 percent of men.’

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0212/73198.html

The reality is that most Americans (Men and mostly women) unfortunately are at odds with your opinion.

    …Hard Cheese!

I would just love to hear about all of the “success stories” of govt helping people, if there were any.   As was stated by a great man, “The most frightening 9 words in the English language are ‘I’m from the Govt and I’m, here to help.’

Just how did they alienate any of these groups?

  • Anonymous

Correct. Reality vs. fantasy. The left puts more faith in an institution that’s real (imperfect though it may be) and the right puts its faith in faith, something that ultimately cannot be proven, tested or verified.

What would happen if we stopped paying for illegitimate children? I’m guessing the number would quickly fall to practically nothing. So, what it comes down to is whether society will be forced to pay for one or the other. I’m thinking, how about not paying for either, and lets see just how fast the bottom-feeders re-think their lifestyles.

    What nonsense, Gerbil.

We get the Media Matters narrative on the “women’s right to contraceptives” canard; and that canard being the innuendo that contraceptives would be inaccessible to women if the Catholic Church isn’t mandated by State Government to violate their religious tenets.

It’s the Democrats’ War On Religion.
    It’s transparent.
    It’s overreaching.
    It’s offensive.
    It’s unconstitutional.
    …and it’s a GREAT VOTE GETTER!

Forward Christian soldiers, the WAR is asunder.

Public opinion has little to do with something being right or wrong, the principle of the government mandating the health insurance that private employers will pay for on it’s face is wrong to me, then requiring that religious institutions pay for inclusions that are in direct contradiction to their doctrine imo is even worse…  it does fly in the face of the first amendment..  but hey that is just me… but if you are going look to public opinion for moral and judicial guidance I would suggest to you that the country is going to be in trouble,

  • Anonymous

Why should insures be forced to pay for contraceptive devices? When the hell did this idiot president become dictator? Why the hell is this, or any government dictating social-sexual norms, or the means to control it?!
Leave the gutter-snipes to their own devices and watch how quickly they become celibate. Remove the safe-guard nets and it will only take one fall before these social misfits conform to reality.

With their positions on birth control, endorsement of Arizona’s policies on illegal immigration, opposing the bailouts of the auto industry, and outwardly opposing the teachers union as a cornerstone of education reform.

  • Anonymous

” What would happen if we stopped paying for illegitimate children?”

If you think the country will be better off for children that are malnourished or homeless or have to go to emergency rooms for their medical care, then I think you have your answer.

I used to obsess about this sort of thing when I was a conservative, too, but then when I looked at the real numbers I came to realize that my priorities were badly screwed up. When compared to corporate welfare and spending on things like expensive weapons systems, this represents a MINISCULE portion of the budget. LESS than miniscule.

Sorry, but paying for contraception is a sound conservative position. Very god investment for the money indeed.

I’ll give the Obama handlers credit for creating this straw man. No one on the Republican side has ever opposed a woman’s right to purchase birth control pills. The argument is false and Stephanopolos set it up, then Sibelius and Obama put it into play.

    1) Obamacare should be declared UNCONSTITUTIONAL

    2) HHS does not have the constitutional authority to force a religious organization to violate its religious principles to provide a product that is directly in opposition to its RELIGIOUS beliefs.

    3) Why in the He!! should I, or anyone else pay for FREE BIRTH CONTROL for ANYONE? What are all those taxpayer funds given to Planned Parenthood about? Birth control pills are NOT very expensive- you can buy them for less than a normal smoker pays on a weekly basis for cigarettes.

    4) It is RANK B.S. to say that this is about “ACCESS.” There isn’t anyone in this country who cannot get birth control pills (unless they are underage- and I don’t know the legality of the age issue).

    5) Any woman stupid enough to buy into the “ACCESS’ argument is probably too stupid to understand how to take the pill anyway, in my opinion.

  • Anonymous

Really Tina? This is your argument. How sad.

No problems here, and I am not against contraception and of course not women, just the force used by the government to make someone else pay for it.  But, given how the left would frame any fight especially when it comes to the confiscation and appropriation of someone else’s money that is what the argument must boil down to…  right?

Tyler, you’re wrong- a lot of women understand that this is a straw man argument and a lot of us know how inexpensive and readily available birth control pills are. Riiiighhttt.  The fall of the Soviet Empire, 30 years of growth, defeat of stagflation, all of that didn’t happen.   And it all collapsed because we had too much freedom from govt.   Did your father marry his sister?

Her experiences had very little if anything to do with her testimony. Her testimony mostly detailed the experiences of other women who have had to deal with the additional expenses of their insurance companies not providing coverage for birth control. This is not exclusive to a Georgetown law student but women in college, working women, women who rely on their significant other’s insurance plans, etc.

  • Pablo

It’s a sanctity of life thing. Catholics don’t believe that pregnancy is a disease or that children are a curse.

Yeah, it was a telling moment when the Republican attendees of one of the debates booed a serving U.S. soldier the moment he said he was gay. And none of the Republican candidates cared enough to comment on that.

  • Anonymous

I am not against contraception, believe me, I understand the implications of taking contraception out of this society, I am against the methods that the government is employing to achieve their goals and the expansion of their regulatory powers… there is a principled argument to be made here without making the fight about women’s rights or into a fight over contraception. You assume rights that do not exist and have never existed, to have someone else pay for your personal responsibility which to me is plainly contrary to the principles of freedom, but then when you force them to do so in when it is contrary to their moral beliefs then to me it is plainly wrong…

    Once again, Pablo feigns ignorance.

    See link for details: http://www.guttmacher.org/media/inthenews/2011/07/13/index.html

“In the first six months of 2011, states enacted 162 new provisions related to reproductive health and rights. Fully 49% of these new laws seek to restrict access to abortion services, a sharp increase from 2010, when 26% of new laws restricted abortion. The 80 abortion restrictions enacted this year are more than double the previous record of 34 abortion restrictions enacted in 2005—and more than triple the 23 enacted in 2010. All of these new provisions were enacted in just 19 states.”

Ron Paul clearly does have a point of view, and it’s pro-life. To many, that translates to “controlling women.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_positions_of_Ron_Paul#Abortion-related_legislation

“Paul has said that the ninth and tenth amendments to the U.S. Constitution do not grant the federal government any authority to legalize or ban abortion, stating that “the federal government has no authority whatsoever to involve itself in the abortion issue.”[152] However, this has not stopped Paul from voting in favor of a federal ban on partial-birth abortion in 2000[153] and 2003.[154]“

If we stopped paying via Food Stamps/WIC etc…Children would starve.

Have you not heard about Greek women who have lost there jobs, gotten to the point that they have lost 50 pounds which probably brings there weight down to 75-80 pounds…They had to finally go to the Greek Orthodox Church’s  orphanages and leave their children there, because at least there they knew they would be fed.

That’s what happens when you take away the safety net. God forbid that your daughter gets pregnant or someone else in your family that the guy leaves say for Afghanistan and is killed or any other excuses that can be made, Even just by skipping town. God knows that before they had sex she didn’t ask for the guys SS#.

$700 for birth control per annum vs $20,176 per annum for WIC, and possibly $3,000 for Food Stamps (they use EBT cards now).  Which is
more cost effective to you? Total WIC payments for the 5 years of eligibility would be nearly $102,000 given the fact that inflation will make that annual rate rise.

Which would you rather pay $700 or $20,176 per year?
    or
$3,500 vs $102,000 + $39,000..the amount of food stamps after WIC runs out and they qualify for food stamps for 13 years?

But you have a narrative that the government is evil and dedicated to making your life a living hell, so I’m not going to waste my time. Continue to live in your idiocy and paranoia, mac. You sound like you prefer it to living in the real world.

Omigosh, are you really this stupid???   The Bill of Rights is a RESTRICTION upon the govt.  It is not govt success stories, it is the rights of the people to be free from govt overreach.  And that is your example?   Wow, do you leftists ever have complete ignorance of the Bill of Righs and its purpose.  Try reading some history that wasn’t written by that fraud, Howard Zinn.

You have never thought this through have you. $700 for birth control vs $8,000 for a normal delivery, and possibly $25,000 for a C-Section. Please let me know which you think an insurer would rather pay.

The cost of an $8,000 delivery would pay for over 11 Prescriptions of Birth Control.

The cost of an $25,000 C-Section delivery would pay for over 35 Prescriptions of Birth Control.

Now I don’t know if you run a insurance company or not..My guess would be that you don’t. Given the cost effective for them..They would much rather pay $700 a year.

  • Anonymous

Let’s ignore for a minute the fact that you are referring to human beings as parasites. The point of these programs is not simply to help “parasites” in need. They are to help society as a whole. As a country, we figured out from the two Great Depressions and other times of hardship that allowing large percentages of fellow citizens to simply starve isn’t exactly good for the economy. Capitalism relies on healthy consumers with a little dough to spend, but there are clearly times when people fall on hard times and live in conditions when they simply cannot survive on their own, whether through losing jobs in a poor local economy, illness, or other issues. Even though a fraction of welfare recipients abuse the system, having a safety net in place is better alternative for the rest of the country than having nothing at all.

Look at statistics prior to the passage of Social Security and welfare.  Starvation among the elderly, for example, was once very high in this country. During the Great Depression, teenagers in some community were told by their families to fend for themselves, which raises crime and violence. Social programs like public education and welfare aren’t perfect but they hugely helped the U.S. grow not only in population but in power over the last 100 years.

Apparently not, since the Right wants our children learning creationism not science, wants our women with their feet permanently in stirrups popping out babies every nine months or being pumped full of dildo ultrasound wands, wants to outlaw Muslims free expression of their religion, wants to enforce fundamentalist Christian morality to make sure two people that love each other are considered subhuman, wants every politician to be on a mission from God, want christian prayers and holidays to be observed by everyone, regardless of their faith and countless other abhorrent, small minded and decidedly un Jesus-like thing comes into their hate-filled reptilian brains

BooBoo Bear, I know that your heart is in the right place, but you only look at the immediate problem and not at causation.  When you say ”
That’s what happens when you take away the safety net.”

I would suggest to you that this is what happens when government assumes responsibility over more and more of the needs of it’s citizens to the point that it spends itself into bankruptcy.  Had government not developed a system in their society that allowed people to think that their needs were going to be taken care of by government, they would have already made accommodations in their lives to be more self reliant in meeting their needs… The people of Greece became overly dependent on their government, their government continued to placate the people by over extending their budgets and finding even new ways that they could provide for the people..   the people became so dependent that they no longer have social systems in place that are self sustaining, and when the government fiscally collapsed now people are truly hurting and the government has no ability to react because the money’s all gone…

That is just the hard reality that many choose not to see, Greece is not taking the safety net away, they have destroyed their safety net by making it into more than they could afford for it to be.. now it is lost and people  are hurting, and nothing can be done about it.

“The second is this, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

    Mark 12:31
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.   34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’   37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’   40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’   41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’   44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’   45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’   46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
    Matthew 25:31-46
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luke 4:18-19But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
    1 John 3:17-18
and from the old testament just for good measure

If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be. Take care lest there be an unworthy thought in your heart and you say, ‘The seventh year, the year of release is near,’ and your eye look grudgingly on your poor brother, and you give him nothing, and he cry to the Lord against you, and you be guilty of sin. You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because for this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’ Deuteronomy 15:7-11

No Pablo, YOU are invested to narrow mindlessly believe that dogma that the left believe government can solve everything.  Gee, I wonder who you have been listening to all these years that would put that kind of ignorant thinking into your head?  Here is a bit of common sense and history.  Any progress that this country has made for the betterment of the common man and woman couldn’t have happened without the government’s involvement.  But here is a true oxymoron.   When government tends to really screw up it is when the you elect too many people who, like you, thinks government is bad into government at all levels.  You get it?  Just look around and see what the current crop of tea party republicons have been doing since elected in the 2010 midterm on all levels.

By the way, I disagree with your notion that you can opt out of religion but you can’t opt out of the government.  You can always get the f*** out this country and go to someplace like… Somalia where you won’t have to deal with any kind of  pesky government.

Hmm, not in that camp, but another idea is that Obama is a socialistic, muslim, Nazi or in another words Satan who is destroying America and must be stopped by any means. Something crazy like that.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, that makes sense. All you have to do is re-think your life. Say for example, you’re born in a small rural town in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Your public education sucks. Your family rakes in $20K for three or four people. There are no jobs except to work at the local Wal-Mart. A family member gets cancer without insurance, leaving you to help earn money and care for the individual (meaning you can’t leave for other opportunities.) In short, you’re a bottom-feeding parasite.

Now all you need to do is rethink your lifestyle. It’s so easy. Just start thinking that you were born into a upper middle class/wealthy community and your father hooked you up by paying for four years at Harvard and then got you a job making a measly $200K at a firm his friend runs. You’re not wealthy, to be sure, but because you’re such a hard worker, you hate the government breathing down your neck and giving your tax dollars to the lazy bottom-feeders.

Perfect solution, caconservative. Both of those examples are easily found in this country but the former are just people who need to start pretending that they weren’t too lazy to be handed huge advantages from birth onward.

thing you lack,” he said. “Go,
sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in
heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great
    wealth. 23Jesus looked around
and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the
    kingdom of God!” 24The
disciples were amazed at his words. But
Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go
through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of
    God.”

Who’s being forced to take contraception against their will? If you can cite that, I’d agree with you.

The fact is that we all pay for government initiatives that we don’t support or need or that we feel are against our values. Ask the millions of people who opposed the wars in the middle east but still have to contribute to the defense budget. Or ask a childless couple why they should pay just as much in school taxes as their neighbors who have a brood of 10 kids. It’s an imperfect system, but — to use a Santorumism — we all have to occasionally take one for the team. That’s not socialism or government “overreach,” but just the reality of living in an interrelated society where we all have to share the same space and resources.

  • mac691

The issue is providing another FREE service. Which is not free, we all know that. Someone will pay for it and that someone will be those who pay the premiums. Money taken from one group of responsible people and given to those who are not responsible. How about removing the safety net on all levels? How long, and fast, do you think the number of children born out of wedlock would fall? When the responsibility for caring for a child falls directly on the shoulders of the parents, and the family, sexual norms will promptly be modified.

  • Hout Bosques

Maybe also because women know women don’t die in child birth at nearly the rate they did before birth control came along. The equation women know:

more women’s reproductive health services =

more use of birth control; more sex & a lot more of it with less worry; less unplanned, unsustainable, unwanted, doomed or mom-killing pregnancies; longer life for women.

You still haven’t got the message that we understand you want to change the subject, but the subject isn’t about contraception, even though you’d like it to be.

Yes its very unchristian to happily pay taxes I know go to keep the hungry fed, the cold warm, and the sick healthy.  Jesus’ message was to make sure that those things happened, he never said how.  Whether I hand a dollar to man on a street or he gets a dollar’s worth of food stamps paid for by my taxes I fed him all the same.  This constant Republican harping on Individual responsibility is anathema to real Christian morality as taught in the Gospels, not from the pulpit.  The bottom line is more people are helped by these government programs than without them, more are fed and clothed and cared for now after the New Deal than they were 100 years ago, and our tax dollars make that possible through government programs.  Private charity has existed for millenia but it wasn’t until the past 50 years that America or any country has had a standard of living to this level, and it is entirely because of government.  That is a demonstrable fact and fulfillment of Jesus’ second commandment: “Love they Neighbour”

In the LDS religion any worthy male can be given the priesthood and is given specific duties. Black people were not allowed to have the priesthood until 1978. Females are not allowed to have the priesthood.
D&C 107: 1-5 1 There are, in the church, two priesthoods, namely, the Melchizedek and Aaronic, including the Levitical Priesthood. 2 Why the first is called the Melchizedek Priesthood is because Melchizedek was such a great high priest. 3 Before his day it was called the Holy Priesthood, after the Order of the Son of God. 4 But out of respect or reverence to the name of the Supreme Being, to avoid the too frequent repetition of his name, they, the church, in ancient days, called that priesthood after Melchizedek, or the Melchizedek Priesthood. 5 All other authorities or offices in the church are appendages to this priesthood.
Official Declaration – 2, 1978Aware of the promises made by the prophets and presidents of the Church who have preceded us that at some time, in God’s eternal plan, all of our brethren who are worthy may receive the priesthood, and witnessing the faithfulness of those from whom the priesthood has been withheld, we have pleaded long and earnestly in behalf of these, our faithful brethren, spending many hours in the Upper Room of the Temple supplicating the Lord for divine guidance.

The Nobel Prize was purely a political ploy and nobody has been able to clearly articulate any valid reasons he was awarded it. He didn’t pass universal healthcare in the sense you mean (single payer) but a mandated system and some people will still fall through the cracks. Saved GM? I thought leftists were against bail outs of big corporations? He brought down Gadaffi with military intervention not authorized by Congress and in direct violation of the Constitution and the War Powers Act. I love how the “anti-war” leftists have been completely silent about Obama continuing the Bush foreign policy and now support it. Partisan hacks, the lot of ya. Got us through the recession? GDP may not be contracting, but last time, I looked unemployment has been extremely high, the housing markets is still in the dumps, the deficit is increasing, our currency is continuously being devalued, and the price of gas is through the roof.

TVA is the reason that I have power to type on this computer and that my apt isn’t underwater half the year.  The CCC gave my Grand-Uncle a job and money to put food in his belly during the Depression.  The Civil Rights act was a government act to limit racist practices by private business and state municipalities and was a truly progressive triumph over conservative ideals.  Public schools make sure that every kid can receive an education, that they have a chance for college, and that they can be safe and sound while their parents work during the day.  Seatbelts were designed by private industry, yes, but their use was mandated by the government and has saved countless thousands of lives, same with airbags. If there weren’t government mandates in medicine we’d still be taking heroin as cough syrup and haircutters would double as surgeons; instead we know our medicine is safe and our doctors are competent.  If you don’t like government get the hell out of America.  It’s the greatest thing about us and its been that way since the ink dried on the Constitution and George Washington was inaugurated.

You didn’t think that argument through.

Perhaps if you thought it through – women should have a personal visit from a nurse every evening to make sure they take their birth control pills – perhaps supply them with bottled water, and check under their tongues to make sure they don’t spit the pill out.

I don’t think your getting the point. When did it become our responsibility, and when did it become legal to force a private company to provide a free service by this government? Dismiss anything beyond your intelligent argument about the costs of child birth, and subsequent rearing of that child, and focus on just what the hell is wrong when a government takes it upon itself to force a private person, or business to provide a free service! Do you not see the inherent devil in this issue?!! This is a matter of our personal rights!! This government is clouding the real issue by covering it up with “THE CHILDREN”. Don’t be distracted by that. Focus on just what this corrupt government just did and what the consequences of that illegal precedence will bring in the future.

    Are we really doing this?

Although my original post never mentioned the restrictive nature of Bill of Rights, your knee-jerk hatred of liberals has moved the conversation in a different direction, so I’ll go with it. The Bill of Rights is a restriction upon government created by the government. A government wields power based on what it DOESN’T do, as much as what it DOES do. If the government decides not to make a law restricting freedom of religion, that’s still government exercising its power. In this case, their power is exercised to insure their power is restricted. Because, ultimately, the Founders COULD have made a law restricting freedom of religion. It was within their power to do that. But they chose not to.

And what is government but a collection of free individuals representing other free individuals.  Jesus didn’t expressly charge the government with that duty but he never forbade the government from discharging it.  Christ’s message is simple human decency and compassion towards every human being, and our government guarantees our rights as human beings.  The two go hand in hand, and the golden rule is a morality that all Americans share regardless of their creed, its not unique to Christianity.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emma-Thomas/100003357377085 Emma Thomas

This is tiresome. Jesus said give up every material thing and follow me. If you insist we should help the rich and ignore the poor, you are not a Christian (meaning a follower of Jesus’s teachings). Protecting material things at any cost is the opposite of christ’s message.

To make it easy for you, since you are obssessed with government, if you are willing to pay more tax to pay for medicaid, say, and I oppose it, you are, in substance, a follower of christ’s teaching and I would be the opposite. I certainly would be obscene to say I am more of a Christian than you are. That is exactly what the right wing nuts say.

  • Anonymous

He said on more than one occasion to feed and clothe the poor and hungry, and he also expressly said to pay the government the taxes it was due, and even hung out with tax collectors.  Where did he say that government couldn’t do any of those things?  Keep in mind government as Christ knew it was autocratic, how do you know that He would disapprove of the system we have today that ensures everyone’s right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness unless its at the expense of another?

You would do better to sign up for a spelling course first.

Here’s the point you’re missing, though: there are many, many instances in this country when individuals can be responsible and hard-working–in fact, more hard-working than some who are wealthier–and yet still fall through the cracks. For individuals who have never witnessed that first-hand because of their life experience (never truly struggled, never lived in a depressed economy, etc), it may be hard to understand that. You think that everyone who tries will do well, and that welfare is mostly used by lazy do-nothings, when the reality is different.

The safety nets are intended to help the neediest not because the government wants your dime but because helping the poorest (however imperfectly) helps keep our society at large functioning.

Have had three husbands and the last one was a womanizer, who died early after he took my money, went off with another woman (he had too many of them). My first sexual experience that was nice was a kiss. My worst first sexual experience was a rape. I’ve had a good love life, but made some mistakes. I’m just trying to be the “voice in the wilderness.” and I’m not saying “repent,” but I’m saying too much of anything is gluttony and there are consequences. The Roman leaders showed us how to do what we want, when we want, and to excess, and looked what happened to all of them.

Nobody is talking about sending millions of non-Japanese into Japan and excusing it with the idea that the Japanese aren’t Ainu. Nobody is sending tens of millions of non-Africans into Africa and excusing it with the notion that the Africans aren’t Pygmies. Only White countries are being inundated and attacked with tens of millions of non-Whites. Only White countries are being made unliveable with an invasion of non-White people. When White people observe these things, the word “racist” is trotted out. Anti-racist is code for Anti-White.

Great Question.  The Universe that I live in is the same universe where the unwed birth rate went from 5% to 40% since the advent of the pill.

Do you have any logical errors you want to apply to that.

Then afterwards we can then apply logic to the massive increase in the propogation of STDs inline with the arrival of the pill as well.

Am I advocating the pill be abolished?…no, but only suckers believe that it has help our holistic health as a nation or that it has helped reduce unplanned pregnancies.

You have demonstrated why Liberals cannot disassociate distaste for government blatantly overstepping its boundries versus an a percieved attack on women.

    Liberal logic goes like this:

What?!!!  You disagree with the government forcing everyone to subsadize birthcontrol through a private entity because you say they dont have the authority to do it?

    YOU HATE WOMEN

Face it, you are exactly the type of sucker the the DNC wants.  They overtly overstep their bounds constitutionaly, but do it in a way that it can be percieved as an attack against a group if you disagree with the power grab.

Then, they rely on idiots like you to propogate the divisive narrative that people are being “oppressed”

How many bankruptcies could most Americans get away with? Last I checked, filing for bankruptcy puts people in financial ruin & forces tax payers to pay the bill for the company’s mistakes. Bain under Romney did this 25% of the time & profited billions from it. Sorry, but exploiting outdated bankruptcy laws to make a profit doesn’t exactly speak for Romney’s credentials as a job creator. More like someone who exploited the system at a very easy time for businesses.

Healthcare is an urgent issue & birth control is an important issue that concerns the vast majority of the women for health reasons. Not quite the same as cars & guns. Once again, women are not inanimate objects. Try comparing them to human beings because that’s what they are, as hard as it may be for you to accept.

  • Verreauxii

I heart liberals….post hoc fallacy. Sequence of events does not infer causation. There are other factors that may have led to increase in unwed mom birthrates……like people deciding to have kids before getting married. Also…you do know that married couples also use bc right? Only looking at pregnancies by unwed moms does not tell us anything about the efficacy of bc. Unwed moms are more likely to be in poverty, and thus, either be less educated about and/or not have the ability to pay for said contraceptives. Quite ignorant to undermine the fact that contraceptives reduce incidence of stds and unwanted pregnancies.

  • Anonymous

    @Verreauxii

The pill does not prevent the propogation of STDS.

And the pill brought in the lifestyle of casual unwed sex and a false sense of security when having sex, that increased the subsequent unwed pregnancies.

Your claim that that more people are choosing to have kids as single parent is ignorant.  The number whom this applies to is miniscule.

And if this is not the case, then how do you explain the massive increase since 1960?

And the thought that just more people want to have kids out of wedlock aint gonna cut it.

That has got to be one of the most corrupt remarks I’ve heard on this subject. And then you close by saying “that’s the Conservative way”? Hell, you haven’t got a clue about what your talking about, so you blame your lack of intelligent insight on a political leaning? I’d suggest growing up but, hell what’s the use!

  • Carlos Machina

I guess you don’t know what you post, which is understandable, since you spend all day doing it.

Here’s one thing you wrote recently: “Everyone I know who lives below the poverty line is their because of
self inflicted circumstances…poor choices, irresposnibility, apathy,”

Does that include poor children?  What poor choices did poor children make?  Looks like being born poor is the only one available.  If only they could have been smart enough to have been born rich!

So, you blame poor children for their own poverty, and you call me corrupt!  Your lack of intelligent insight must be due to your political leaning.  I’d suggest growing up and grabbing a clue, but, hell, what’s the use?

  • Anonymous

You’re misunderstanding the situation. These safety nets have been implemented for decades after voters approved them. It’s a democracy here, so the will of the majority of voters is imposed upon the will of the minority of voters. You are in the minority. If you don’t like this “Socialist country” that’s had these types of programs for nearly 100 years, it’s you who should move.

Bottom line is if you think those programs constitute “Socialism” then America has been a Socialist country since well before the days of Stalin, Kruschev, Mao, Pol Pot, etc. Just because some hardcore right-wingers don’t like Social Security, welfare and Medicaid doesn’t mean they can decide how things work for the majority of voters.

Whine about it all you want. Just don’t pretend like it’s the rest of us who have to bend to your will.

  • Anonymous

Here’s where you do not understand.

You two have shifted back 3 different arguments and substituted them

1.If a woman has a “right” to birth control (An inanimate object, mind you), you’re stipulating something completely different than BANNING birth control; which can only be done by the government. What you’re saying is; Someone should chemically derive a little pill and make it readily available for you at no cost. If you believe that, that’s quite asinine.

    2. DICTATING can only be done through GOVERNMENT ACTION. So who is proposing the ban on Birth control? Santorum? Sure; than he’s a bigot. Putting Ron Paul in the same category, the guy who wants NO dictation of ANY personal behavior, is a contradiction.

    3. The Constitutional argument: You cite the ENUMERATED powers delegated by article I, section 8. “Regulate Commerce”. Regulate; as explicitly mentioned in the federalist papers; held the common definition “TO MAKE REGULAR”. So between the states the federal government could ensure states did not discriminate against among their colleagues.
