Jon Huntsman Says Iowans ‘Pick Corn,’ Not Presidents

VIDEO

Former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, who has put all his weight behind a solid showing in the New Hampshire primary, appeared on The Early Show Thursday morning and fired a shot right between the eyes of Iowans and the candidates vying to win next week’s Iowa caucus.

“They pick corn in Iowa, they actually pick Presidents here in New Hampshire.”

Huntsman then went on to talk about the deficit and economics before getting into more praise of residents of the Granite State. He said that he jumped to third place in the state, noting that town halls were slowly getting larger. “As always, New Hampshire is going to upend conventional wisdom,” Huntsman said. “People always think they know how these elections are going to turn out, and then comes the vote out of New Hampshire.”

He later added that the rap on him was that he could win a general election, but he couldn’t pull off the primary victory. And a strong finish in New Hampshire could give him a tremendous push.

    Jon Hunstman IS Cornholio.

  • http://gregingleright.weebly.com/ Greg

The conventional wisdom has it that a dismissive and ignorant man should hide these faults while seeking public office.  Jon aims to prove the wisdom wrong.

I was just remembering wistfully how Rudy Giuliani camped out in (occupied?) Florida during his campaign, and how well that worked out for him.

Jon Huntsman seems to be smoking funny stuff in his Corn Cob Pipe

Nice way to get your poll numbers up Jon.

This from a guy who is betting his campaign on New Hampshire, which is 93.9% white, 1.1% black, 1.6% multiracial, 2.8% Hispanic, and has an unemployment rate of about 5.6%  Oh, and it is not a closed primary.  Undeclared and independent voters can vote in any primary.

So we can be assured of that 1-5% supporters increase go to Dr Ron Paul in Iowa! Thanks Huntsman!

There is a great disturbance in the Force. A candidate must have told an awkward truth. I may have to take another look at Huntsman. I will link to this from my Old Jarhead blog.

They want to discredit Iowa because Paul could win. If Paul doesn’t win we will likely hear from the media how important Iowa is to the election.

  • http://gregingleright.weebly.com/ Greg

Just a few days ago my grandfather (a man I love dearly) walked me down into the basement to show me the newest addition to his gun collection.  I first considered the heft and sighting of the recently purchased AR-15.  We moved over some of his other recently purchased weapons, a .22 S&W pistol with a laser sight, a very interesting .9mm short rifle… His anger was still fresh over an extended police confiscation of the pistol (an old war buddy accidentally removed the tip of his finger with the weapon at the local range).  Christ hung over the conversation in various forms… on a cross and most wonderfully imagined as a young man and glued to an oval cross-section of a medium sized tree.  Grandpa was upset about the pistol, upset about everything Obama and convinced that VP Biden had recently declared Al Qaeda our friend (explanation to the contrary only evidence of my liberality).  Grandpa prays deeply and often.  He is a good man.  Certain that his guns may be needed soon.

Manufacturing, insurance and finance measure as far greater portions of Iowa’s economy than corn.

The difference, Steve, is that Obama said something that is true.  Jon did not.

It’s sneering comments like this that are why Huntsman won’t get the nomination and, even if he did, he wouldn’t get elected:  he cannot resist the urge to be an obnoxious jerk to people he needs to win over.

  • G.Donahue’s associate Slade

Robert just wants to be left alone to eat his gruel !

  • http://mrfunn.myopenid.com/ mrfunn

Huntsman turned me off at the beginning of his campaign. He immediately came out attacking the other candidates.

  • Anonymous

Winners of New Hampshire primaries include Hillary Clinton (2008), John McCain (2000), Pat Buchanan (1996), Paul Tsongas (1992), and Gary Hart (1984).

Word of advice to Huntsman: if you’re going to be an obnoxious jerk, at the very least, don’t be factually wrong.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

No, I think “camp” is a very good word to use with Rudy!.

  • Anonymous

It was a brilliant quip. Huntsman was getting no delegates in Iowa, and frankly, in NH, they have been observing the Iowa caucus circus with amusement. Huntsman did not just rip the Iowa caucuses, he also identified NH as the place that chooses presidents. And now with this mediaite coverage, Huntsman may move up.

Could anyone give a valid reason why two totally inconsequential states like Iowa and New Hampshire lead off the Presidential Election lottery?

Can anyone tell me why the process has to drag on for almost 11 months?

Can anyone tell me why there can’t be a PRIMARY day, about 60 days less before THE election in November?

  • http://www.facebook.com/matttwain Matt Twain

He’s right.  Iowa is going to be the Tea Party nomination process for the Republican primaries, and it won’t amount to a hill of beans in the scheme of things.  Why he continues to remain in this race is beyond me, but it seems that to remain politically viable one must do what one must do.

  • Anonymous

    That sounds so sensible.

  • http://twitter.com/kidbookratings Erik Metz

This is going to hurt his VP bid.  I would have put him as a near lock until now…

  • Jim Harper

    Yes,  I think I can.

To have a single Primary Day would basically hand the control of the executive branch to NY and LA and to candidates who have no clue about the rest of the nation and don’t give a crap about that.  To see what that brings, consider that Der Spiegel reported last fall that the NAZI party (yes, the real one) is quietly taking over parts of Germany like Mecklenberg and Pomerania.   Seems that the mainstream parties don’t give a rip about rural Germany and since there is only one day to vote in the whole country, they spend all their money and staff on the big urban centers.  There are a number of elections in rural Germany where the Nazis are the only party campaigning.

Consider what kind of stuff could bubble up here if none of the presidential candidates or the media that follows them went out to the far flung corners of the nation and filmed it.

The other problem is the big markets require big ad buys, which require big money.  Politicians are whores that get paid in advance.   Do you really think that some insurance salesman in NH is going to give Mitt Romney money if he knows it will get him nothing?  Or would he be more likely to give if it got him 10 minutes with the candidate?   In a single nation primary, basically George Soros would own the left and Rupert Murdoch and the Koch brothers would own the right.  The Pols will need lots of money from these guys and will in all likelihood be even more beholden to special interest groups than they are now.

I grant you that IA and NH have had a lock on the first status way too long, but having a broken up primary season is better than the alternative.   What would be of benefit to us is to have a law that bans campaigning in the media till after the election season has been declared.  Then declare the season open at 60 days before the first state primary.

IA and NH should be made to go last for the next two elections and two  other states should be selected at random to replace them.  Then the other states line up as they want to.  After 3 elections, the selection and schedule process is redone with those states going to the end.

  • Jim Harper

Huntsman screwed up bad.  I am from Omaha and have friends in Iowa.  People in this part of the world take way too much crap from the coastals and the mountain people to let that one roll off their backs.  I would wager the few thousand people in Iowa who were going to support him are rethinking things now.

To those who don’t live in the part of the country which can be insulted at will by anyone, think about this.   If he will say this about IA, some day, he will take a shot at NY or FL, or CA.

  • Anonymous

Word has it that he may go independent.
    3rd party.

  • http://mediamatters.org/ Leedog

Basically, Huntsman just called Iowans corn-picking Hillbillies who have no clue on what it takes to choose a Presidential candidate!!

A little better way to understand how the US congress and the Obama government is managing our money…..

This rather brilliantly cuts thru all the political doublespeak we have become accustomed to hearing.  It puts it into a much better perspective….Why the U.S. was downgraded by Standard & Poor:

    U.S. Tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000*
    Fed budget: $3,820,000,000,000*
    New debt: $ 1,650,000,000,000*
    National debt: $14,271,000,000,000*
    Recent budget cuts: $ 38,500,000,000

Let’s now remove 8 zeros and pretend it’s a household budget:

    Annual family income: $21,700*
    Money the family spent: $38,200*
Difference – New debt on the credit card: $16,500*
Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710*
    Total budget cuts: $385

    Got It ?

    OK now Lesson # 2:

Here’s another way to look at the Debt Ceiling:
Let’s say, You come home from work and find there has been a sewer backup in your neighborhood….and your home has sewage all the way up to your ceilings. What do you think you should do ……Raise the ceilings, or pump out the shit?

Your choice is coming Nov. 2012

Why don’t you “do the Google” and find out a bit about macroeconomics?

  • Anonymous

Huntsman is counting on one of a few things happening:

    1)  Rick “ManDogSex ManSweater” Santorum does really well in Iowa and the rest of those standing pound Rick for the next few days in NH (they could set Ron Paul’s hair on fire, but he’s there for the long haul), taking off his luster.

    2)  Everyone else has had their chance as the “frontrunner” in this dog and dead pony show and ABR is out of people to pick.

    3)  He’s counting on the fact that the supposed heavy-hitters passed on running this year (thinking Obama will win reelection)and the history of the GOP of making candidates take their turn to be the nominee.  He thinks Huntsman 2016 is going to look pretty good after another 4 years of Obama and Congressional gridlock.

The more independents we have, the less engaged perhaps they’ll be in the corporate machine.  That’s of course assuming that that’s what political independents with power truly stand for.  Right now, Huntsman appears to be the most rational of the lot in the Republican primary race.  But the rest of the Republican primary lunatics haven’t skinned him alive either.  Political science is all about spinning and propaganda.  In the end, the build up to Iowa has been nothing but a far right Tea Party love fest.  And Huntsman is wise to not buy into that kind of fringe mentality.

“And they pick douchebags in Utah.”

  • Anonymous

I got you. But isn’t California and New York still in the bag and seems to be for the foreseeable future for the Democrats?

In my opinion, it does not make any difference how long the primaries are dragged out. Some will get by without being properly vetted, just look at the pathetic example in the White House, right now.

Obviously, nothing will change any time soon. When a person is stuck in a paradigm, it’s sad. When a nation is stuck in a paradigm, it’s tragic.

Would it be too much to ask that if the primaries/caucuses need to be done as they are now, at least  do it in alphabetical order?

    DUMBA$$.

    From August of this year.

So far, President Obama has taken 61 vacation days after 31 months in
office. At this point in their presidencies, George W. Bush had spent
180 days at his ranch where his staff often joined him for meetings. And
Ronald Reagan had taken 112 vacation days at his ranch.

George W. Bush logged an astonishing 490 days at his ranch in Crawford, where he went to great lengths to be seen working.

Granted, our current president got the royal treatment by liberals who were scared of being seen as being hard on a black man (Cant be having the cool kids think they might be racists).  This would be even a bigger problem in a single voting day system as there would be NO vetting of the candidates on problems of significance outside of NY and LA.   Even SF and SD would be shut out.
